When I Was A Young Girl: Gender And Race In The Life Archives Of Criminal Transportation, Nick Townsend Jun 2021

When I Was A Young Girl: Gender And Race In The Life Archives Of Criminal Transportation, Nick Townsend

University Honors Theses

In the eighteenth and nineteenth century, the carceral system in England shifted away from corporal punishment and moved towards containing and policing those deemed criminal in different ways. One notable way was transportation, the practice of moving convicts out of the imperial core into a colony. This practice became a way to remove "lesser" populations from England and regulate social behavior while also expanding the British Empire and allowed convicts a new purpose in expanding the carceral state. This developed alongside the broader trends of racialization and colonization in the British Empire, which drew a global color line separating "white" …

Indigenous Youth Storywork: A Spiritual Awakening Of A Maya Adoptee Living In Kkkanada, Ana Celeste Macleod

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

Indigenous adoptee scholars understand their identity through community connection, culture, education and practice. In this Storywork, through engagement with current literature and ten research questions, I explored what it meant to be an adoptee in West Coast (KKKanadian) Indigenous communities. An Indigenous Youth Storywork methodology was applied to bring meaning to relationships I have with diverse Indigenous Old Ones, mentors and Knowledge Keepers and their influence on my journey as a Maya adoptee returning to my culture. My personal story was developed and analyzed using an Indigenous decolonial framework and Indigenous Arts-based methods. The intention of this Youth Storywork research …

Delay Discounting And Food Reinforcement In Youth Of Color: A Cluster Analysis, Bernardo Loiacono Jun 2021

Delay Discounting And Food Reinforcement In Youth Of Color: A Cluster Analysis, Bernardo Loiacono

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Pediatric obesity within the United States continues to be national health concern. Children of color are systemically impacted by obesity. Behavioral Economics (BE) provides a theoretical framework for understanding what social, psychological, and cultural factors impact decision making and food consumption. BE posits that poor executive control (i.e., impulsivity) and relative reinforcing value of food (RRVfood) are two main behavioral components that predict consumption habits. These constructs are poorly understood among children from non-white backgrounds. The current study aimed to 1) identify patterns of impulsivity and food reinforcement within a diverse sample of 88 elementary school children and …

The Role Of Functional Disability And Social Support In Psychological Outcomes For Individuals With Pediatric Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Keely Huntley Bieniak

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Objectives: Individuals with Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS), a genetic condition that impacts a person’s connective tissues, report a large number of physical symptoms including chronic pain, fatigue, gastrointestinal dysfunction, and joint dislocations. Research into the psychosocial outcomes of this condition remains insufficient, especially for pediatric patients. The present study aims to fill this research gap by examining the relationship between functional disability, social support, and mental health outcomes for individuals with pediatric hEDS. We hypothesize that increased functional disability will be associated with increased mental health challenges, specifically anxiety and depression. Furthermore, it is hypothesized that this relationship will be …

The Association Between Community-Level Factors And Police Decisions To Found Sexual Assault Cases, Erin Elizabeth Hoffman Jun 2021

The Association Between Community-Level Factors And Police Decisions To Found Sexual Assault Cases, Erin Elizabeth Hoffman

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Attrition rates in sexual assault cases remain high despite reforms over the past 30 years (Smith et al., 2018). Evidence suggests the locus of case attrition lies with police decision-making (Spohn & Tellis, 2019). Community-level factors may improve or bias police decisions in sexual assault cases; however, this has yet to be examined. Thus, the purpose of this study was to understand community-level factors that predict police decisions to found a sexual assault case. Founding is the first decision officers make and determines whether a case will be investigated. This study used official available records of sexual assaults reported to …

Influence Of Ethnic-Racial Similarities And Ethnic-Racial Support On Student Well-Being: The Role Of Natural Mentors, Yesenia Garcia

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

According to Rhodes’ model of youth mentoring, one of the ways through which positive outcomes are achieved is through identity development. This study considered ethnic-racial identity (ERI) in the lives of college students of color and how that identity is promoted through natural mentoring relationships. The focus of this study was on ethnic-racial private regard, a component of ERI. This study examined: (a) the associations among mentor ethnic-racial similarity and support and student ERI and (b) the relationships among mentor ethnic-racial similarity and support and student psychological well-being. The sample included 266 college students of color who completed an online …

Contextualizing Teacher-Directed Violence In Special Education, Kayleigh E. Zinter Jun 2021

Contextualizing Teacher-Directed Violence In Special Education, Kayleigh E. Zinter

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Violence in school settings is a global phenomenon. Research tends to focus on peer-to-peer student aggression, however teacher-directed violence in school settings by various aggressors is also being explored to better understand the scope of school violence (Bounds & Jenkins, 2016; McMahon et al., 2014; Ozdemir, 2012; Sundaram, 2016; Werthein, 2003; Zeira et al., 2004). Few studies have focused on special education teacher experiences with violence, and their differing experiences from their general education counterparts. This mixed-methods study examines the extent to which general and special education teachers experience teacher-directed violence, as well as incorporates an ecological lens to contextualize …

Life After The Storm: An Examination Of Bereavement And Posttraumatic Growth Among Urban Adolescents, Keturah Jedidah Platt

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

The loss of a loved one due to death can be one of life’s most painful and traumatic experiences. During this challenging period, individuals are more prone to developing physical and emotional health problems. Even though these difficulties should be fully acknowledged, it is important to also acknowledge the possibility of posttraumatic growth (PTG) following bereavement. PTG refers to the positive psychological changes that may occur as a result of highly stressful events and circumstances. These changes include growth in the following five areas: (a) New Possibilities, (b) Relating to Others, (c) Appreciation of Life, (d) Personal Strength, and (e) …

Role Shifting In Organizational Teams: Grounded Theory And Scale Development, Tatem H. Burns Jun 2021

Role Shifting In Organizational Teams: Grounded Theory And Scale Development, Tatem H. Burns

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Organizations utilize teams to effectively reach desired goals and performance. An approach to understanding organizational team effectiveness has been through research on team member roles, which refer to the consistent pattern of behavior characteristic of a person in their typical team setting. Research on team member roles has focused on the ability of team members to shift their roles in response to external catalysts (e.g., adapting to a new reward structure); however, research has yet to address internal catalysts to team role shifting (e.g., shifting to reduce role dissatisfaction). The inclusion of research on internal catalysts to team role shifting …

A Life Course Person-Centered Approach To Adult Trauma Histories And Examination Of Intergenerational Trauma In Preschoolers, Jessica Annabel Arizaga

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

This study seeks to address gaps in intergenerational trauma research by focusing on a predominantly Latine and racially minoritized sample, applying Life Course Theory concepts to the measurement of trauma exposure among parents, and using person-centered methods to uncover trauma typologies (subgroups with similarly patterned trauma histories). Participants were 143 parents (91 primary caregivers and 52 secondary caregivers, of which 42 were fathers) and their preschool age children (n = 91; 51.1% boys) recruited from three Head Start Programs in the Chicagoland Area (65.65% of families had low household incomes). Five distinct trauma typologies were found through Latent …

Identifying The Strategic Core Of Interactive Teams, Morgan Elizabeth Gleason Jun 2021

Identifying The Strategic Core Of Interactive Teams, Morgan Elizabeth Gleason

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

This paper examines how the strategic core of interactive teams can be identified and examined using interactive process data. The IOP literature suggests that certain key members contribute more to team outcomes than others (Barker, 1993; Sparrowe et al., 2001). Key members of a team comprise a “strategic core,” encountering more job-relevant tasks and problems, thereby contributing more to team performance (Barker, 1993). This research used manually coded passing data from 1,309 games of the 2016-2017 National Basketball Association (NBA) season and player statistics reported by the NBA to examine the structure of the strategic core of basketball teams based …

In addition to analyzing specific broadcasts, a comparative analysis was conducted between MSNBC vs. Fox News, in an effort to highlight key events that took place during the battle against COVID-19. This research utilizes agenda setting and framing principles to …

Communication After A Romantic Breakup, Kayleigh Jordan Mahoney Jun 2021

Communication After A Romantic Breakup, Kayleigh Jordan Mahoney

College of Communication Theses and Dissertations

Throughout a person’s life, it is likely that they will experience a romantic breakup at some point. However, post breakup experiences can differ from person to person. Many different things can impact a person’s post breakup experiences including their investment during the time of the relationship, as well as any communication that takes place after the breakup. Previous research has taken a look at post breakup experiences. However, little to no research has examined post breakup experiences while taking into consideration romantic beliefs. This study (N = 72) tested how a person’s investment during the relationship predicts post breakup distress, …

Backward Glances: The Cultural And Industrial Uses Of Nostalgia In 2010s Hollywood Cinema, Matthew Cooper Jun 2021

Backward Glances: The Cultural And Industrial Uses Of Nostalgia In 2010s Hollywood Cinema, Matthew Cooper

College of Communication Theses and Dissertations

Over the course of the 2010s, one identifiable trend in Hollywood cinema was the significant presence of nostalgia films. These films stage idealized recollections of the past, appealing to affective longing for its perceived comforts and stability. This thesis utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to present a historical narrative of recent Hollywood cinema and its intersection with broader American culture and society. I argue that the most recent cinematic “nostalgia wave” is attributable to the broad, epochal conditions of modernity and late modernity, specific historical events and trends of the 2010s, and Hollywood-specific technological and industrial discontinuities. In an attempt to …

The Fan/Producer Duality In Microfandoms: Examinations Of Collaboration, Creativity, And Capital, Abby Kirby Jun 2021

The Fan/Producer Duality In Microfandoms: Examinations Of Collaboration, Creativity, And Capital, Abby Kirby

College of Communication Theses and Dissertations

This paper explores the fan identity as being synonymous with the identity of media producers through the lens of microfandoms. Microfandoms are co-created by the fans of an already existing piece of media, but act as their own independent fandom. By completing an illustrative case study through surveys, interviews, and data analysis, the author was able to view the production of a microfandom and the roles that fans inhabit within that space. Conclusions were reached regarding the role of hierarchy and social capital within tight-knit microfandoms, demonstrating that the means of fan production are informed by an individual’s status within …

(Post-) Pandemic Tourism Resiliency: Southeast Asian Lives And Livelihoods In Limbo, Kathleen M. Adams, Jaeyeon Choe, Mary Mostafanezhad, Giang Thi Phi

Anthropology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

While tourism scholars have sought to problematize the unevenly distributed impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, we know much less about how resilience is cultivated among tourism practitioners and communities whose lives and livelihoods are have been placed in limbo. Drawing on literature at the intersection of critical tourism studies and resilience theory as well as interviews with local tourism practitioners and academics, four historically situated and place-based trends in Southeast Asia that are reshaping tourism in the region are outlined: livelihood diversification, ecosystem regeneration, cultural revitalization, and domestic tourism development. These trends highlight how the political economy of tourism in …

E-government research has increasingly been raised since ICT was used in the public sector, but it has not yet reached the maturity stage. It contributes to the high number of research published in recent years. However, there is still limited or no bibliometric analysis conducted to analyze e-government research as a whole in the last decade. The purpose of the study is to establish bibliometric analysis as an extensive review of e-government literature. The method used in this study consists of five steps: defining search keywords, initializing search results, refining search results, compiling preliminary data statistics and analyzing data. The …

Covid-19 Lockdowns And Air Quality In The United States, Ashlyn B. Cenicola Jun 2021

Covid-19 Lockdowns And Air Quality In The United States, Ashlyn B. Cenicola

Economics Masters Project Research Papers

Using a difference-in-differences approach, I test whether the U.S. COVID-19 lockdowns influenced air pollution levels. I hypothesize that the halt in human mobility stemming from lockdowns caused transportation sector activity to decrease, leading to a reduction in related pollutants such as PM2.5, PM10, and NO2. I investigate whether counties with strict lockdown policies experienced greater improvements in air pollution relative to before the lockdowns than counties with lenient lockdown policies. I use lockdown stringency data from the University of Oxford to identify strict versus lenient counties, and data from the Environmental Protection Agency to capture air pollution outcomes. The main …

Reducing Prejudice Through Law: Evidence From Experimental Psychology, Roseanna Sommers, Sara Burke Jun 2021

Reducing Prejudice Through Law: Evidence From Experimental Psychology, Roseanna Sommers, Sara Burke

Law & Economics Working Papers

Can antidiscrimination law effect changes in public attitudes toward minority groups? Could learning, for instance, that employment discrimination against people with clinical depression is illegal cause members of the public to be more accepting toward people with mental health conditions? In this Article, we report the results of a series of experiments that test the effect of inducing the belief that discrimination against a given group is legal (vs. illegal) on interpersonal attitudes toward members of that group. We find that learning that discrimination is unlawful does not simply lead people to believe that an employer is more likely to …

Victims In The Dark Shadows: A Model Of Toxic Leadership. Journal Of Organizational Psychology, Daryl Watkins, Steven Walker Jun 2021

Victims In The Dark Shadows: A Model Of Toxic Leadership. Journal Of Organizational Psychology, Daryl Watkins, Steven Walker

Publications

Walker and Watkins (2020) conducted a thematic analysis of the lived experiences of 130 oppressed followers of toxic leaders. The current paper presents a new model of toxic leadership that emerged from the study. Toxic leadership is a phenomenon sanctioned by the organization, perpetuated by the toxic leader, and lived by the oppressed follower. The model situates toxic leadership within an open organizational frame with recommendations for organizational leaders to drive toxic leadership out of their organizations, for leaders to recognize their toxic behaviors, and for followers to cope with toxic leaders.
