Robust Lag Weighted Lasso For Time Series Model, Tahir R. Dikheel, Alaa Q. Yaseen Jun 2021

Robust Lag Weighted Lasso For Time Series Model, Tahir R. Dikheel, Alaa Q. Yaseen

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The lag-weighted lasso was introduced to deal with lag effects when identifying the true model in time series. This method depends on weights to reflect both the coefficient size and the lag effects. However, the lag weighted lasso is not robust. To overcome this problem, we propose robust lag weighted lasso methods. Both the simulation study and the real data example show that the proposed methods outperform the other existing methods.

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In previous works, we have shown the efficacy of using Deep Belief Networks, paired with clustering, to identify distinct classes of objects within remotely sensed data via cluster analysis and qualitative analysis of the output data in comparison with reference data. In this paper, we quantitatively validate the methodology against datasets currently being generated and used within the remote sensing community, as well as show the capabilities and benefits of the data fusion methodologies used. The experiments run take the output of our unsupervised fusion and segmentation methodology and map them to various labeled datasets at different levels of global …

Taking Restorative Justice Seriously, Adriaan Lanni Jun 2021

Taking Restorative Justice Seriously, Adriaan Lanni

Buffalo Law Review

Those seeking to reduce mass incarceration have increasingly pointed to restorative justice—an approach that typically brings thoseaffected by a criminal offense together in an attempt to address the harmcaused by the offense rather than to mete out punishment. This Article is an attempt to think seriously about incorporating restorative justice throughout the criminal legal system. For restorative justice proponents, expanding these practices raises a host of questions: Does the opportunity to alleviate mass incarceration justify collaboration with a deeply flawed criminal legal system? Will the threat of criminal prosecution destroy the voluntariness and sincerity that is essential for a successful …

Associations Between Community Built Environments With Early Care And Education Classroom Physical Activity Practices And Barriers, Bethany D. Williams, Susan B. Sisson, Dipti Dev, Bryce Lowery, Diane Horm, Janis Campbell, Denise Finneran, Jennifer Graef-Downard, Linda Whaley Jun 2021

Associations Between Community Built Environments With Early Care And Education Classroom Physical Activity Practices And Barriers, Bethany D. Williams, Susan B. Sisson, Dipti Dev, Bryce Lowery, Diane Horm, Janis Campbell, Denise Finneran, Jennifer Graef-Downard, Linda Whaley

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

The influence of community-built environments on physical activity (PA) support in Early Childhood Education settings (ECEs) is unknown. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine associations between community PA environments and ECE classroom PA practices. We included licensed Oklahoma ECE directors serving 3-to-5-year-old children. Parks and playground locations were exported from Google Earth. National Walkability Index was derived from 2010 US Census data. ArcMap 10.6 was used to geocode ECE locations, which were within an Activity Desert if no parks/playgrounds were located within a 1-mile radius or if Walkability Index was 10.5 or below. Classroom PA practices were …

The Impact Of Contact Tracing On The Spread Of Covid-19: An Egocentric Agent-Based Model, Andrew Pilny, Lin Xiang, Corey Huber, Will Silberman, Sean Goatley-Soan Jun 2021

The Impact Of Contact Tracing On The Spread Of Covid-19: An Egocentric Agent-Based Model, Andrew Pilny, Lin Xiang, Corey Huber, Will Silberman, Sean Goatley-Soan

Communication Faculty Publications

At its core, contact tracing is a form of egocentric network analysis (ENA). One of the biggest obstacles for ENA is informant accuracy (i.e., amount of true contacts identified), which is even more prominent for interaction-based network ties because they often represent episodic relational events, rather than enduring relational states. This research examines the effect of informant accuracy on the spread of COVID-19 through an egocentric, agent-based model. Overall when the average person transmits COVID-19 to 1.62 other people (i.e., the R0), they must be, on average, 75% accurate with naming their contacts. In higher transmission contexts (i.e., …

Is Variability In Inhibition-Related Neural Activation After Sleep Restriction Associated With Eating Behavior In Adolescents?, Kimberly A. Barnett Jun 2021

Is Variability In Inhibition-Related Neural Activation After Sleep Restriction Associated With Eating Behavior In Adolescents?, Kimberly A. Barnett

Theses and Dissertations

The primary aim of the present study was to evaluate whether intra-individual variability in inhibition-related neural activation in response to sleep restriction is associated with eating behavior in adolescents aged 12-18 years. In addition, the potential moderating effects of sex and body mass index on the association between sleep and variability in neural activation were examined. This study employed a within-subjects crossover design that randomized subjects to both a 5 hours per night (sleep restricted) and 9 hours per night (well-rested) sleep condition for 5 nights, with experimental conditions separated by four weeks. On the 6th day of each study …

A Feasibility Study Of A Group-Format, Ecologically Oriented Neurorehabilitation Of Memory (Eon-Mem) Program In Older Adults, Kayla Michelle Frodsham Jun 2021

A Feasibility Study Of A Group-Format, Ecologically Oriented Neurorehabilitation Of Memory (Eon-Mem) Program In Older Adults, Kayla Michelle Frodsham

Theses and Dissertations

Older adults often show declines in subjective and objective memory performance relative to younger adults. One potential path for helping older adults with memory may be compensatory memory training programs. Compensatory memory training programs teach strategies to manage memory impairment. Traditional compensatory memory training programs tend to be highly specific to a task and often do not generalize to other memory tasks. Ecologically Oriented Neurorehabilitation of Memory (EON-Mem) is a method for teaching memory strategies that may generalize for efficient use in everyday contexts. We performed a feasibility study to determine the value of pursuing a group-based version of EON-Mem …

One of such growing AI-enabled technologies is the virtual personal assistant (VPA). In this project, I draw on my filed-work with my four interlocuters in Cairo with their respective VPAs, Siri and Alexa. In analyzing my experiences and observations, I focus on three main themes: subservience, simultaneity and surveillance. Examining the role …

Impact Of Income And Corporate Taxes On Economic Development In Egypt, Khaled Abo-Ahmed Jun 2021

Impact Of Income And Corporate Taxes On Economic Development In Egypt, Khaled Abo-Ahmed

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine how do corporate and income taxes impact economic development in Egypt. This study uses the analytical quantitative method, and the approach of this study is based on using annual time series data for the period 1980 to 2018 to estimate two models by using Autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model. First estimation is between direct taxes (corporate and income taxes) and Growth domestic product (GDP) growth as dependent variable, and the second one by using human development index (HDI) instead of GDP growth. The second objective is to investigate the difference, if any, …

Challenges Facing Independent Cultural Actors: The Case Of Egypt, Reem Khedr

Theses and Dissertations

The independent art scene in Egypt flourished following the January 25 revolution in 2011. This study examines the experiences of Egyptian artists and cultural operators through a looking glass into the evolving democratization of arts towards cultural democracy from a global perspective and using the intrinsic and instrumentalist arguments regarding the value of arts. Furthermore, it employs a qualitative analysis of case studies of 18 cultural operators in Cairo and Alexandria, who work in different artistic fields ranging from visual arts to performing arts and academia. The results demonstrate that the cultural policy framework guiding the arts sector in Egypt …

Racist Securitization Of Refugees, Syrian Refugees In Lebanon: A Case Study, Hind Alhelou Jun 2021

Racist Securitization Of Refugees, Syrian Refugees In Lebanon: A Case Study, Hind Alhelou

Theses and Dissertations

With the growing rates of involuntary (forced) migration and even traditional migration (movement from one country to another in search of work opportunities, better lifestyle, study, etc.); the movement of these bodies raises their vulnerability to be constructed as threats. The same threat they are fleeing from is being attached to them as they attempt to seek security elsewhere. This intersection of migration and securitization studies especially emerged because of the interconnectedness of the world that is majorly facilitated by globalization.

Within this context, this thesis examines how Syrian refugees in Lebanon are racialized because of a securitization process perpetuated …

Knowledge Mapping, Intellectual Capital And Organizational Intelligence, Gautam Gogoi, Dr. Pranab Kr. Barooah Jun 2021

Knowledge Mapping, Intellectual Capital And Organizational Intelligence, Gautam Gogoi, Dr. Pranab Kr. Barooah

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Knowledge management initiatives rely on maps to locate internal knowledge, similar to how an explorer in the wilderness follows a map. Knowledge maps, like travel maps, are static. A knowledge map is a “snapshot in time” that helps businesses understand and organize knowledge assets. It's anything but an express model inside a business cycle of who has the information, where the information is found, and why it is significant. Perhaps the most well known strategies for recognizing information in associations is information planning. It can help chiefs to all the more likely comprehend the information stream inside the associations. Planning …

Innovation Management In The Library: A Bibliometric Analysis, Budi Harsanto

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The library plays a central role in facilitating access to knowledge and being a center in what is currently known as knowledge management. Libraries that are culturally subject to rigid rules and identic with a bureaucratic atmosphere face a high challenge in innovating. The purpose of this paper is to explore the publication development on innovation management in the library. The method used is a bibliometric analysis of publications on innovation in a library context, which is then analyzed using the innovation management perspective. The analysis results identified five clusters: innovation culture, technological innovation, innovative human resources, knowledge management, and …

Minority Representation On The U.S. Court Of Appeals: Do Foreign-Born Judges Influence Immigration Case Outcomes?, Bianca Ortiz-Miskimen Jun 2021

Minority Representation On The U.S. Court Of Appeals: Do Foreign-Born Judges Influence Immigration Case Outcomes?, Bianca Ortiz-Miskimen

Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Economics and World Affairs

This paper assesses the impacts of minority representation on judicial decision- making within three-judge panels on the Ninth Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals. While much

of the existing literature regarding this issue has looked at racial and gender minorities in the federal judiciary, this paper seeks to identify whether the presence of foreign-born judges on appellate panels has an effect on the holdings of immigration-related cases. To address this question, I compiled an original database of 200 immigration cases decided between 2016 and 2020. The results reaffirm previous findings that panels with at least one female judge or …

Weakening Of The Nation-State By Climate Change: Water Weaponization By Isil, Annika Cole Jun 2021

Weakening Of The Nation-State By Climate Change: Water Weaponization By Isil, Annika Cole

Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Economics and World Affairs

Climate change is quickly becoming one of the biggest threats faced by the international community and has the capacity to greatly impact global security. The relationship between climate change and conflict is still unraveling; however, worsening climatic events have contributed to political instability around the world. As climate change implications become more apparent, water is less abundant due to worsening droughts and less precipitation, allowing it to become a target for groups seeking to control territory or populations. This paper examines the impact of climate change in shifting the power dynamic between states and violent non-state actors within their borders. …

Sexual Violence And Sex Trafficking: An Observation Of Developing International Law And Its Implementation, Hannah Kate Albach Jun 2021

Sexual Violence And Sex Trafficking: An Observation Of Developing International Law And Its Implementation, Hannah Kate Albach

Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Economics and World Affairs

Margot Walström, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Sexual Violence defines sexual violence as a "way of demonstrating power and control. It inflicts fear on the whole community. And it is unfortunately a very effective, cheap and silent weapon with a long-lasting effect on every society.” Despite the universal damage of sexual violence throughout history, international law did not begin to develop a response to such crimes until the 1990s. Worldwide fear and shame associated with atrocities of sexual violence, difficulty defining it across cultures, challenges to accurate data collection, and lack of collective action all contribute to the …

Understanding The Unique Spatial Relations And Power Dynamics Of China’S Urban Villages, Kaitlyn Zhao Jun 2021

Understanding The Unique Spatial Relations And Power Dynamics Of China’S Urban Villages, Kaitlyn Zhao

Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Economics and World Affairs

China’s recent history as a Communist stronghold-turned-economic-powerhouse has garnered widespread scholarly and popular attention, as its government seeks to marry economic liberalization with one-party rule, propping up the private sector while retaining the preeminence of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party). As its economy continues to grow at astounding rates and the state begins to take a more forward position on the world stage, many have deemed it an impending threat to Western hegemony. Yet focusing on China’s outward positioning obscures the many peculiarities bubbling within it. On the ground, the landscape of the country has been fundamentally transformed within a …

The Radicalization Of The Far-Right In Germany And Regional Disparities In Support, Sophia Winograd Jun 2021

The Radicalization Of The Far-Right In Germany And Regional Disparities In Support, Sophia Winograd

Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Economics and World Affairs

The radicalization of far-right political groups is becoming an increasingly dangerous problem in German politics. While Germany may be viewed as a fervent ally for liberal thought in Europe, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is gaining substantial traction in national politics. Interestingly, the AfD has grown disproportionately by region, drawing more support from East Germany than West. The underpinnings of this trend hinge upon increased asylum being granted to Muslim immigrants and the long-held disdane by the East for the West’s economic successes. An understanding of the AfD’s popularity is integral to combating intolerance and radicalization within Germany …

The Great Swedish Experiment, Xiaofan Gong, Michael Ratzkin Jun 2021

The Great Swedish Experiment, Xiaofan Gong, Michael Ratzkin

Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Economics and World Affairs

As COVID-19 spread across Europe, many countries chose to implement swift and stringent lockdown measures on their populations in March 2020 by shutting down businesses and banning large public and private gatherings. Sweden, however, chose to manage the pandemic by relying on its citizens to make the best decisions for themselves and their families. This paper places Sweden’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic in a political and economic context. The paper also analyzes the country’s response and effectiveness in implementing voluntary and stepwise actions. Research finds that although measures taken to slow transmission while accounting for efforts to preserve the …

Tracking The Tracing: A Global Investigation Of Privacy Issues In The Age Of Covid-19, Jessie Miller Jun 2021

Tracking The Tracing: A Global Investigation Of Privacy Issues In The Age Of Covid-19, Jessie Miller

Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Economics and World Affairs

As the COVID-19 pandemic tore through the globe, policymakers grappled with two key questions. First, to what extent could new tools to collect and analyze data on a massive scale help limit the virus’s spread and, second, how would the collection of that data impact the privacy rights of individuals? This paper examines both questions and reveals how nation-specific traditions, values, and leaders shaped the delicate balance between the right to privacy and the protection of the population from COVID-19. An exploration of the surveillance techniques developed in response to the SARS and HIV pandemics reveals the growing consensus around …

The Cost Of Subway Delays: A Counterfactual Welfare Analysis Of Boston’S T, Adam Dean Jun 2021

The Cost Of Subway Delays: A Counterfactual Welfare Analysis Of Boston’S T, Adam Dean

Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Economics and World Affairs

Boston’s subway system, the T, is an important artery for transportation in and around the city. However, it is the oldest subway system in the United States, and, as a result, is in dire need of upgrades. This paper employs a welfare analysis to calculate the economic cost of the T’s lack of reliability, while also comparing the T’s reliability rate to other transit systems around the world. With a counterfactual estimate of a 95 percent reliability rate versus the pre-pandemic 88.47 percent reliability rate, the difference in welfare is found to be between $54 million and $163 million annually. …

More Than Mechanisms: Shifting Ideologies For Asset-Based Learning In Engineering Education, Brian E. Gravel, Eli Tucker-Raymond, Aditi Wagh, Susan Klimczak, Naeem Wilson

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Learning spaces, the practices in which people engage, and the representations they use are ideological. Ideologies are coherent constellations of values, beliefs, and practices that impose order on how disciplines like engineering operate. Historically, engineering spaces have been dominated by a relatively technocratic, rationalistic, and exclusionary ideology, but more recent attention to asset-based approaches to engineering education offers transformative promise. Asset-based ideologies can reshape images of legitimized engineering practice, recasting engineering education to disrupt dominant exclusionary ideologies. This paper describes an assets-based learning space, SETC, that recaptures the imagination of engineering for technological and social change. Drawing from extensive ethnographic …

Library Faculty and Staff papers

I explained and demonstrated the process I came up with to use OCLC WMS to do an overlap analysis of the online journal titles that we subscribe to directly through EBSCO, i.e. our paid subscriptions, and the access we have to those titles through our databases, in order to identify subscribed titles that we could potentially cancel. This is timely since the EBSCO renewal process starts in early June.
