When Clients Who Got Worse Believe They Got Better: A Qualitative Analysis Of Oq-Deteriorators Reporting Improvement In Therapy, Eric Alexander Ghelfi
When Clients Who Got Worse Believe They Got Better: A Qualitative Analysis Of Oq-Deteriorators Reporting Improvement In Therapy, Eric Alexander Ghelfi
Theses and Dissertations
A recent study highlighted discrepancies between qualitative client self-reports of outcome and OQ-45 reports. Specifically, only 8.8% of clients who deteriorated during a course of therapy based on the OQ-45 perceived that they had deteriorated, while 50% of these clients perceived that they had improved in therapy (Top et al., 2018). This phenomenon, where different means of tracking outcomes yield divergent results, has been called “paradoxical outcome.” The trend suggests that the most advanced forms of tracking psychotherapy outcomes might not detect important facets of outcome from the perspective of psychotherapy clients. The current study is a qualitative investigation of …

Stunting predominantly occurs during the first 1000 days of life and continues to the age of five years. We will aim to assess the effectiveness of specialized nutritious foods (SNF)and social and behavior change communication (SBCC) strategies during the first 1000 days of life to prevent stunting among children in two rural districts of Badakhshan, Afghanistan. This will be a quasi-experimental pre-post study with the control group utilizing qualitative and quantitative methods. Before launching the program, formative research will be conducted on the acceptability, appropriate use and SBCC strategies needed to support the introduction of intervention package. Repeated cross-sectional baseline …

Experiences Of Uc Santa Barbara Female Alumni Exposed To A Gender-Based Mass Shooting, Erin G. Carpenter
Doctoral Dissertations
Over the past five decades, mass shootings have emerged as a highly politicized, social problem that generates considerable public sentiment and media attention (Elsass et al., 2014; Rocque & Duwe, 2018; Shultz et al., 2014). Moreover, the increase in mass shootings carried out on or near college campuses have led researchers to focus more intently on the predictors and consequences that characterize these types of attacks (Boykin & Orcutt, 2018; Elsass et al., 2014; Fox & Savage, 2009). One college mass shooting that has received limited empirical attention is the 2014 mass shooting that occurred in Isla Vista, a town …
Stigma And Social-Emotional Health In Youth With Learning Differences, Kelsey Maki
Stigma And Social-Emotional Health In Youth With Learning Differences, Kelsey Maki
Doctoral Dissertations
Youth diagnosed with specific learning disorder (SLD) and/or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), defined collectively for the purposes of this study as youth with learning differences, experience poorer social-emotional health outcomes in comparison to their typically developing peers. These youth additionally experience stigma from their peers, teachers, and broader community, which may impact social-emotional health. As a secondary data analysis of a larger study, the present study investigated the role of stigma consciousness alongside demographic variables, self-esteem, and peer relationships in social-emotional health outcomes. Due to the possible differences between youth diagnosed with SLD, ADHD, and comorbid SLD/ADHD, group differences …
Electronic Voting Implementation Through Bitcoin Blockchain Technology, Cassie Schultz
Electronic Voting Implementation Through Bitcoin Blockchain Technology, Cassie Schultz
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
Even with all the advances we have seen in secure digital technology, the most secure way to currently cast a vote on election day consist of a hand-marked paper ballot. When extenuating circumstances arise, offering a voting environment that is accessible and safe for everyone, but also secure can be a difficult task under the current voting system. This paper discusses one proposed electronic voting system which uses blockchain technology. Based on a review of literature on blockchain technology and specific implementations of voting systems, a summary of relevant background information as well as implementation protocol are provided. Even though …
The Path To Eliminating Oppression: Why Anarchist Thinkers And Intersectional Practitioners Should Work Together, Samantha Montgomery
The Path To Eliminating Oppression: Why Anarchist Thinkers And Intersectional Practitioners Should Work Together, Samantha Montgomery
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
In this paper, I examine the similarities between the tenets of anarcha-feminism and the practices of those with intersectional viewpoints. During my research, I interviewed 3 women of color who are leaders in the elimination of oppression in Denver, CO, and learned that having an increased experience with interlocking oppression, as those with multi-marginalized identities do, results in having the expertise to recognize where oppression exists, and, in most cases, developing the empathy to fight against it. This paper thus concludes that if the United States of America was to systemically implement an intersectional perspective, it would then take measurable …

It’s election time again. The signs are out and the political ads are in full swing. The time has come for the United States and its citizens to participate in a democratic election, electing a politician and political party that they want at the forefront of our government. It is our responsibility to choose the party that we as a country believe will hold the ideals that will best combat the issues that plague our society.

The 2020 Election, Gabriel Smith
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Once every four years, on the Tuesday following the first Monday in November, Americans exercise their democratic right to vote via presidential elections. We are once again approaching this point in what will be the 59th presidential election, this time between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden. This election does not seem merely to be one of many because the victor will be forced to address rising extremism, a global pandemic, and economic uncertainty. For many Americans, it truly seems as if our identity, livelihood, and survival may rest on the shoulders of the victor. For this reason, it …

Employment Assistance And Offender Desistance: An Evaluation Of Recidivism In A Faith-Based Re-Entry Program, Caitlin J. Steckley, Emily Friedman, Rachel Simmons
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Recently released criminal offenders are generally subjected to heavy stigma as they reenter society which is compounded by the general isolation that many feel upon release. Because of these difficulties, re-entry programs can be an effective and prosocial way for ex-offenders to reintegrate back into the community and workforce. This project was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of a local faith-based, non-profit re-entry program in Duval County between the years 2015 and 2019. Prisoners of Christ (POC) services both low and high-risk offenders through their employment assistance and residential housing programs. We conducted quantitative research on POC participants utilizing rearrest …
How U.S. Gender Policy For Post-Taliban Afghanistan Was Shaped, Fawzia Ahsan
How U.S. Gender Policy For Post-Taliban Afghanistan Was Shaped, Fawzia Ahsan
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
U.S. invaded Afghanistan shortly after the 9/11 terroristic attack of U.S. by Al-Qaeda. Although the U.S. invaded Afghanistan to pursue Osama Bin-Laden, the leader of Al-Qaeda, women’s rights and freedom in Afghanistan were at the heart of the Bush administration agenda of “war on terror”. Through analysis of existing literature and data, this study seeks to discover how U.S. gender policy for post-Taliban Afghanistan was shaped, and what are its pros and cons? My study indicates that political discourses on women’s rights and freedom shaped the U.S. gender policy for post-Taliban Afghanistan however women still suffer from increased inequality and …

Embodied Injustices: Covid-19, Race, And Epigenetics, Maria Encinosa
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
The co-occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic with the long-lasting effects of systemic racism has been devastating, and results in vast inequities in infection and mortality rates within communities of color. In this article, I analyze the potential for epigenetic research to operationalize the social science theory of embodiment, which describes how the social and material worlds manifest in our physical bodies. Epigenetic modifications can be triggered by environmental stressors, to which minority populations are more likely to be exposed. In turn, these stressors are linked to disorders that increase COVID-19 susceptibility. Thus, epigenetic modifications provide an avenue by which racialized …
The Anxiety Of Presenting Identity, Savannah Fleming
The Anxiety Of Presenting Identity, Savannah Fleming
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
This work explores aspects of Queer identity, historical reflection, and acceptance through painting, printmaking, and collage. Savannah Fleming's artwork intends to reclaim art history and alter it to include those excluded from its canon. Through the use of prints, paint, and collage, they create works that address the bias of art history, while tackling contemporary problems of identity and acceptance. References and alterations to art history are her way of addressing the erasure of Queer and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) from the art historical canon, while battling with modern-day confines on individuality.

Acceptance: A Research Overview And Application Of This Core Act Process In Aba, Dr. Michael Bordieri, Phd
Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
Acceptance describes mediating behaviors in which an individual reduces escape and avoidance behaviors in response to unwanted private events while also encouraging increased appetitive control. Given the recent resurgence of interest in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy/Training (ACT) in ABA, a review of this core treatment process is warranted. Acceptance enjoys strong empirical support within the psychological and contextual behavioral science literatures, with treatment outcome studies, self-report measures research, and behavioral laboratory tasks all supporting the process. A review of select publications in behavior analytic journals found that acceptance also enjoys preliminary evidence of effectiveness across a variety of populations and …

Inducing Cognitive Reflection And Its Impact On Contradictory Belief Holding, Meg Powers, Keith Lyle Phd
Inducing Cognitive Reflection And Its Impact On Contradictory Belief Holding, Meg Powers, Keith Lyle Phd
Undergraduate Research Events
Cognitive reflection is the propensity to reflect on one’s intuitions. 1 Some people are more likely than others to engage in cognitive reflection. This tendency can be measured with the Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT). 2
Cognitive reflection appears to be an important individual difference factor. For example, lower CRT performance has been linked to greater belief in conspiracy theories 3 and greater social conservatism. 4 Hence, it is important to test whether reflection can be induced among people who do not spontaneously engage in it.
The present research will also test whether cognitive reflection is related to yea yeaing . …

The Role Of Occupational Therapy: Military Dependents Transitioning Into Motherhood, Ria Allen, Becki Cohill, Susan Macdermott, Karen Park
Summer 2021 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Background: Motherhood is a time of adjustments and changes. Mothers are learning how to balance taking care of a newborn, household responsibilities, and self-care. Adjustments of routine in everyday occupations can change quickly as the baby's needs evolve over time and established routines are disrupted and new routines are created. For military spouses, military culture and lifestyle can affect adjustments to motherhood as well including deployments, frequent moves, and reestablishing support systems. An in-depth literature review revealed that there is limited occupational therapy research, programming, and resources available to military dependent mothers
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to …

In, Not Of, The Library: Queer Library/Archives Workers And Catholic Collections, Henry M. Handley
Marian Library Faculty Presentations
For library and archives workers at institutions without a religious affiliation, the parallel world of Catholic librarianship may never surface. Even at Catholic academic institutions, workers in some positions may not fully realize that under the surface, a click or two away from a CFP, are entire Catholic library subject classification schemes, professional organizations, journals, #CatholicTwitter circles, and conferences that prohibit “scandalous” materials -a potentially treacherous sphere to be queer and trans. What does it mean for LGBTQ+ library and archives workers to collect, describe, preserve, and even teach with Catholic materials and collections that silence or condemn us? Is …

Returning To Our Roots: Re-Introducing Art Back Into Occupational Therapy, Vivi Trinh
Summer 2021 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
The usage of arts and crafts played a significant role in the fruition of the profession, but as it adopted more medically- and evidence-based treatment methods, most practitioners steered away from arts and crafts. The overall purpose of this project was to promote the use of art in OT as well as learn about the current use of art in OT through discussions held with practicing and retired occupational therapists and OT students with fieldwork experience. A portion of the project includes conducting a needs assessment at Urban Street Angels (USA), a community-based facility in downtown San Diego, CA that …

Navigating Research Misappropriation And Mischaracterization: Facilitating A Workshop On Strategies, Winn W. Wasson
Navigating Research Misappropriation And Mischaracterization: Facilitating A Workshop On Strategies, Winn W. Wasson
Librarian Publications
From medicine to medieval studies, there is a growing trend of ideologically motivated individuals and groups misappropriating and mischaracterizing academic research and even intimidating researchers to further political agendas. It is essential that researchers be well prepared in the event that their research gets unwanted attention. To that end, I created and facilitated a workshop for faculty and graduate students on how to prepare for and respond to instances when their research gets misappropriated or mischaracterized to push an unsupported ideological narrative. Strategies covered in the workshop included utilizing undergraduate classrooms to gauge how one’s research might be understood by …

Relationship Between Gender-Based Violence And Poor Access To Water, Sanitation, And Hygiene Services, Yousra Abu Sharekh
International Programs
It is generally believed that gender gaps in having access to safe, equitable and adequate Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services arise from the unfair distribution of WASH resources between females and males, in addition to the gender norms that assign WASH responsibilities to women and girls.
It was found that poor access to WASH services is not a main cause of Gender Based Violence (GBV), however, it increases the vulnerability of females to different types of GBV. It is strongly recommended to conduct research on GBV and access to WASH facilities that is more comprehensive, qualitative, reliable and evidence …
