Human–Wildlife Interactions
Wild boar (Sus scrofa) reappeared in Flanders, Belgium in 2006 after more than half a century of absence. Besides being a native and highly valued game species in Europe, wild boar are also known to be responsible for car collisions, crop damage, disease transmission, and ecological damage at high densities. The management of wild boar therefore seeks to balance these positive and negative impacts. Given the highly fragmented landscape in Flanders and its multifunctional use, coexistence with wild boar is only possible through integrated management involving relevant stakeholder groups. However, to be successful, this requires that the management …

Effects Of Rucksack Military Accessory On Gait Dynamic Stability, Seong H. Moon, Christopher W. Frames, Rahul Soangra, Thurmon Lockhart
Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
Various factors are responsible for injuries that occur in the U.S. Army soldiers. In particular, rucksack load carriage equipment influences the stability of the lower extremities and possibly affects gait balance. The objective of this investigation was to assess the gait and local dynamic stability of the lower extremity of five subjects as they performed a simulated rucksack march on a treadmill. The Motek Gait Real-time Interactive Laboratory (GRAIL) was utilized to replicate the environment of the rucksack march. The first walking trial was without a rucksack and the second set was executed with the All-Purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The role of the Library and Information professionals has been integral in promoting knowledge cultures throughout the centuries. Libraries have undergone a sea change and have been keeping pace with the networked and digital world. Libraries are the gateways to the information resources that engage the readers in different ways and capacities. A crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic shut the doors of the physical libraries but the opportunities and the doors for the digital libraries were opened like never before in history. LIS professionals all around the world have taken up the challenge of providing the information services to the …
Internal Entrapment And Fearlessness About Death As Precipitants Of Suicidal Thoughts And Planning In The Context Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (Ptsd), D Nicolas Oakey-Frost
Internal Entrapment And Fearlessness About Death As Precipitants Of Suicidal Thoughts And Planning In The Context Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (Ptsd), D Nicolas Oakey-Frost
LSU Master's Theses
The post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) relationship has been extensively studied but potential explanatory mechanisms remain inconclusive. Entrapment is one variable that evinces a theoretical and empirical mechanistic relationship with PTSD and STB. Further, entrapment and fearlessness about death (FAD) have not been linked but are hypothesized to interact in a way that facilitates vulnerability for intense suicidal thinking and potentially suicidal behavior. The current study examined the indirect effect PTSD symptoms have on suicidal ideation, planning, and likelihood of future suicide attempt through both internal (IE) and external entrapment (EE), moderated by levels of …
The Bidirectional Effects Of Serious Conduct Problems, Anxiety, And Trauma Exposure: Implications For Our Understanding Of The Development Of Callous-Unemotional Traits, Emily Lynne Robertson
The Bidirectional Effects Of Serious Conduct Problems, Anxiety, And Trauma Exposure: Implications For Our Understanding Of The Development Of Callous-Unemotional Traits, Emily Lynne Robertson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The association of anxiety and trauma with childhood conduct problems has long been the focus of research, and more recently this area of research has become critical to understanding the development of callous-unemotional (CU) traits. Research in samples of children and adolescents has indicated that those elevated on both CU traits and anxiety seem to show more severe externalizing behaviors and are more likely to show histories of trauma. These findings have typically been interpreted as being indicative of a unique casual pathway to CU traits in those high on anxiety. However, an alternative explanation is that the higher rates …
The Emergence Of The Legitimacy Of Religious Healing Knowledge In Taiwan, Wei-Cheng Chiu
The Emergence Of The Legitimacy Of Religious Healing Knowledge In Taiwan, Wei-Cheng Chiu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation investigates how religious healing knowledge has been defined and used by scholars, physicians, and New Agers and how religious healing knowledge emerged as a legitimate area of knowledge in Taiwan. The key position of religious healing knowledge within the entanglement between religion and spirituality is also examined. After the martial law was lifted in 1987, Taiwan’s society had rapidly diversified, and its religions were at the transition point between the old and the new. Meanwhile, the new spirituality culture was introduced into Taiwan in the 1980s and got popular in the 1990s, and it inherited the trend of …

Cellphilming And Building Solidarity With Queer Youth To Speak Back To Historical Erasures In New Brunswick Social Studies Classrooms, Casey Burkholder
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
New Brunswick, Canada’s K-12 Social Studies curricula erases the myriad histories and experiences of the province’s LGBTQ+ communities. Building on these erasures, this study analyzes how six queer, trans, and non-binary young people (aged 14-17) created cellphilms (cellphone + mobile film production) in response to these absences. In the study, I ask: How might engaging in media and art production with young people—and screening and exhibiting these productions in online and community spaces—work to counter dominant forms of apathy and denial, and support youth to claim a stake in creating solidarities, belonging, and community-making? What is required for youth-produced media …

Improving Recycling In Jordan: Using Surveys And Case Studies To Predict The Success Of Project Tadweer, Blake Dixon
Improving Recycling In Jordan: Using Surveys And Case Studies To Predict The Success Of Project Tadweer, Blake Dixon
Capstone Collection
Globally, the mismanagement of municipal solid waste continues to be an environmental, human health, and economic hazard, especially in developing countries. In Jordan, solid waste production is rapidly increasing as their population continue to grow. Unfortunately, only 6 to 10% of this waste is recycled with most of it landing in landfills or open dumpsites. Because of this, project TADWEER (“recycle” in Arabic) was launched by the Royal Marine Conservation Society of Jordan’s (JREDS’) Eco-School program and will attempt to achieve zero waste in 10 selected schools in Al-Zarqaa and Irbid for the 2021-2022 school year. The project also plans …

Exploring Standardized Patients' Nonverbal Responses Toward Lgbtq Microagressions, Betty Ngo, Emily J. Noonan Phd, Laura Weingartner Phd
Undergraduate Research Events
Nonverbal behaviors play a significant role in the patient-doctor interaction as it provides cues to underlying unspoken emotions and concerns from the patient (Silverman, 2010). Nonverbal behaviors are most significant when they can be used to reinforce or contradict verbal responses. Thus, it is important for medical students to learn to identify patient non-verbal behaviors through their speech patterns, facial expressions, and body posture, and be able to relate these responses to a positive or adverse patient-physician interaction.
Rising third year medical students were video recorded taking health histories from standardized patients (SP; n = 84) of all gender identities. …
Examining Own-Race Bias: A Cooperation And Memory Study Using Diverse Emojis, Jillian Franks
Examining Own-Race Bias: A Cooperation And Memory Study Using Diverse Emojis, Jillian Franks
Theses
Other-race-effect or own-race bias is a well-documented phenomenon in memory. Findings suggest that humans are better at recognizing and remembering faces of their own race than other races. Previous research suggests that these results are due to a lack of interracial contact or exposure to other racial groups. Evidence from previous studies has demonstrated that individuals process own-race faces differently than other-race faces, paying more attention to more salient features that become better encoded. While there is empirical support for both hypotheses, it has yet to be studied if the other-race effect for memory extends to representational human faces, for …

In the last few decades, the emergence of mid-scale, intermediated marketing channels that fall between commodity and direct markets has attracted growing interest from scholars for their potential to preserve small and mid-sized farms while scaling up alternative agrifood sourcing. When such mid-scale supply chains are formed among multiple business partners with shared ethics or values related to the qualities of the food and the business relationships along the supply chain, they may be termed "values-based supply chains (VBSCs)." Most of the research on VBSCs to date has relied primarily on a case study approach that investigates the performance of …

No. 01: South-South Migration, Food Insecurity And The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jonathan Crush, Diana Thomaz, Sujata Ramachandran
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
The implementation of global migration governance processes such as the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and the Global Compact for Migration has been stalled by the COVID-19 crisis as flows of and opportunities for international migrants shrink through the containment strategies adopted by most governments in response to the pandemic. Migrants have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19 and the policies taken in response to the pandemic, with higher risk of exposure to the virus, greater likelihood of working in sectors that have experienced major economic downturn, lower rates of access to social support mechanisms and health care, and increased vulnerability to …

No. 02: Food Remittances, Migration And Rural-Urban Linkages In Kenya, Elizabeth Opiyo Onyango, Jonathan Crush, Samuel Owuor
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
Rural-urban migrants in Sub-Saharan Africa do not generally cut their links with rural homes and much has been written about the character, types and implications of connections between rural areas and rapidly growing cities. The persistence of circular migration and the perpetuation of rural-urban connectivity is a distinctive feature of Kenyan urbanization. Informal non-market food remitting from rural to urban areas has received little attention in comparison with cash remitting from city to countryside. This paper presents new evidence from a household survey in Nairobi on the extent, frequency and nature of informal food remitting from rural areas to migrants …
Workforce Metrics Using Child Welfare Data, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development
Workforce Metrics Using Child Welfare Data, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development
Workforce Analytics Resources
Workforce metrics that can be constructed from child welfare data fall into three categories: caseload/workload, case continuity, and worker- and unit-level variability.
Caseload/Workload Metrics
Caseload metrics can help to
- Assess compliance with caseload standards (e.g., policy, statute)
- Describe and inform case assignment decisions
- Describe and address the work burden experienced by staff
- Describe and address inequities in caseloads among workers
- Inform workforce planning or staffing decisions
- Monitor caseloads to assess policy or practices intended to affect caseloads
Caseload metrics are among the most commonly used workforce metrics that can typically be obtained from child welfare data. These metrics are usually …
Social Mindfulness And Prosociality Vary Across The Globe, Niels Van Doesum, Ryan Murphy, Marcello Gallucci, Adam W. Stivers
Social Mindfulness And Prosociality Vary Across The Globe, Niels Van Doesum, Ryan Murphy, Marcello Gallucci, Adam W. Stivers
Psychology Faculty Scholarship
Humans are social animals, but not everyone will be mindful of others to the same extent. Individual differences have been found, but would social mindfulness also be shaped by one’s location in the world? Expecting cross-national differences to exist, we examined if and how social mindfulness differs across countries. At little to no material cost, social mindfulness typically entails small acts of attention or kindness. Even though fairly common, such low-cost cooperation has received little empirical attention. Measuring social mindfulness across 31 samples from industrialized countries and regions (n = 8,354), we found considerable variation. Among selected country-level variables, …

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is the “context-specific organizational actions and policies that take into account stakeholders’ expectations and the triple bottom line of economic, social, and environmental performance” (Aguinis & Glavas, 2012). Businesses using the CSR model engage in or work towards bettering society in three spaces: the environment, social welfare, and governance (ESG's). We want to see how this model is communicated among stakeholders, and if this social mission is fully integrated into the practices and workspaces of YUM! Brands.

Impact Of The Change In Payments On The Actual And Perceived Behaviors Of Medical Care Providers Authors, Amy Ehinomen Eremionkhale
Business Analytics Faculty Publications
Prior literature established the link between a person aging out of a parent's insurance coverage at age nineteen and a significant decrease in insurance coverage of those nineteen-year-old young adults. This paper furthers this line of research by establishing a statically significant change in the payment burden of the various sources that comprise the total payment received by the medical care providers treating young adults who have aged out of their parent's insurance. The empirical method used is the regression discontinuity framework. The impact of the change in the providers' payment sources on the providers' behavior (supply-side) and the patients' …

Ptsd And Video Games: A Veteran View Of The Value Of Gaming Through Recovery, Nyssa Danielle Curtis
Theses and Dissertations
PTSD is a pervasive and complicated mental health disorder affecting 20% of US military veterans. Currently, 22 veterans die per day due to suicide, and the majority are not enrolled in VA. As veterans face barriers in seeking care following trauma, many are turning to video games as a form of self-care. Guided by research literature, a veteran survey, and anecdotal evidence from the veteran author, this thesis paper explores ways in which communication through video games can influence PTSD therapy, tapping into their use to increase therapeutic benefits. Seventeen veterans participated in an online survey, which inquired about their …
An Exploration Of Knowledge Type And Firm Performance: A Study In The Mlb, Adam E. Lindberg
An Exploration Of Knowledge Type And Firm Performance: A Study In The Mlb, Adam E. Lindberg
Dissertations, 2020-current
There is both theoretical and empirical support for the idea that firm-specific knowledge (FSK) has a greater effect on sustained competitive advantage than general knowledge (GK). However, empirical support suffers from several practical and methodological challenges which suggest that the relationships between FSK, GK, and firm performance are even more nuanced than previously considered. Multilevel modeling techniques (polynomial regression and latent growth modeling) were implemented to test these effects on both short- and long-term performance among MLB teams between 2015-2019. Although the results of the hypothesis tests and post-hoc analyses were largely non-significant, they do provide some information that furthers …

‘Access Necessitates Being Seen’: Queer Visibility And Intersectional Embodiment Within The Health Information Practices Of Queer Community Leaders, Travis L. Wagner, Vanessa Kitzie
Faculty Publications
Navigating healthcare infrastructures is particularly challenging for queer-identifying individuals, with significant barriers emerging around stigma and practitioner ignorance. Further intersecting, historically marginalised identities such as one’s race, age or ability exacerbate such engagement with healthcare, particularly the access to and use of reliable and appropriate health information. We explore the salience of one’s queer identity relative to other embodied identities when navigating health information and care for themselves and their communities. Thirty semi-structured interviews with queer community leaders from South Carolina inform our discussion of the role one’s queer visibility plays relational to the visibility of other identities. We find …

Proper Names And Translation, Khalid Al-Shaikhli
Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات
A lot of work has been done on proper names (henceforth PNS) starting from philosophers, but, yet, not ending with computational linguists. Moreover, many studies have been devoted to the translation of PNs, but little work to their translation from or into Arabic. The present study is an attempt to fathom the process of rendering foreign PNs into Arabic. Three factors contribute to this process. A. whether the foreign name is pronounced properly, B. the way the name is written and C. whether to translate or transliterate the name. The study sheds light on the lack of guidelines for unified …

Language plays an essential role in achieving objective news stories in journalism. With the progress made over the last decades in the fields of media and telecommunications, news stories written in a given language are expected to be translated and presented for the audiences of other languages. It should be remembered that the translator has a significant role to play in observing the objectivity of the texts rendered from a cultural

In recent years, the notion of communication competence has become one of the major preoccupations of a good number of didactical working in teaching / learning of foreign languages ,The objective being to make the user / learner, endowed with a communication skill, to communicate in foreign language.
Our aim in the present communication is a misconception of this notion. We will try, as much as possible, to shed light on the different meanings of this notion, first of all in the ethnology of communication, in language teaching, in the common European framework of reference for languages (CEFR) or even …
