Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

COVID-19 vaccination is being rapidly rolled out in the US and many other countries, and it is crucial to provide fast and accurate assessment of vaccination coverage and vaccination gaps to make strategic adjustments promoting vaccine coverage. We reported the effective use of real-time geospatial analysis to identify barriers and gaps in COVID-19 vaccination in a minority population living in South Texas on the US-Mexico Border, to inform vaccination campaign strategies. We developed 4 rank-based approaches to evaluate the vaccination gap at the census tract level, which considered both population vulnerability and vaccination priority and eligibility. We identified areas with …

Le Champ De L'Argumentation, Abderrazzak Rhazza

Dirassat

The Field of Argumentation

Argumentation has become one of the favorite subjects of literature in recent years, be it philosophical, logical, linguistic or psychological. In part, this interest is due to a certain almost general infatuation with everything that has to do with Communication. But on the other hand, it answers more fundamental questions, such as the status of ordinary rationality in relation to scientific rationality, or of natural logic in relation to formal logic. In this field, the theoretical approaches to argument are nonetheless so manifold, and their conceptions of the limits of its field so heterogeneous, that it …

This general finding is easily verifiable in the Souss region.

Integrated tourism or segregation in Agadir?

Viewpoints from below

In the 70s of the 20th century there was a boom in distant travel and mass tourism from Europe to developing countries, here in question Morocco (CI). Speaking of the universe character! and multidisciplinary tourism, capable of animating all economic and commercial sectors and favorable to all areas of human life, it was attributed, so to speak, a "magical power" at that time, a status intangible to any criticism.Up to this time, there exists a lot of advertising material (launched by tourism promoters) seeking to gain the confidence of investors and …

Fast Estimation Of Matrix Exponential Spatial Models, Ye Yang, Osman Doğan, Süleyman Taşpınar Sep 2021

Fast Estimation Of Matrix Exponential Spatial Models, Ye Yang, Osman Doğan, Süleyman Taşpınar

Publications and Research

The matrix exponential spatial specification (MESS) is an alternative to the spatial autoregressive-type (SAR-type) specifications with several attractive properties. The spatial dependence in the MESS-type models is formulated through a matrix exponential term, and the estimation of these models may require the computation of the matrix exponential terms many times in an estimation procedure. In the literature, it is well documented that the computation of the matrix exponential terms can pose challenges in terms of reliability, stability, accuracy, and efficiency. We propose a matrix-vector products approach based on the truncation of Taylor series expansion of the matrix exponential terms for …

Is Arizona’S Senate Bill 1070 A Degenerative Policy? Latinos Say Yes, And No. Implications For Latinos And Democracy In A Trump World, Karina Moreno Sep 2021

Is Arizona’S Senate Bill 1070 A Degenerative Policy? Latinos Say Yes, And No. Implications For Latinos And Democracy In A Trump World, Karina Moreno

Journal of Public Management & Social Policy

Schneider and Ingram’s theory of policy design (1997) states that policy making includes a process through which knowledge is socially constructed and is a domain in which power elites are able to manipulate symbols, rhetoric, images, and distort logical lines of inquiry to justify policies that privilege certain social groups while stigmatizing and disenfranchising others. Policies act as lessons, and individuals, in turn, then internalize messages on their value to society based on the policies that are assigned to them. Using qualitative data in the form of in-depth interviews conducted with Latinos in Arizona, this paper asks, Is Arizona’s Senate …

Interdistrict And Charter School Mobility In Arizona: Understanding The Dynamics Of Public School Choice, Jeanne M. Powers, Amelia M. Topper, Amanda U. Potterton

Journal of Public Management & Social Policy

We investigate the mobility patterns of elementary students enrolled in Arizona’s traditional public school districts and charter schools. We address interdistrict and charter school mobility simultaneously. Most student movement is interdistrict or between school districts. In Arizona, interdistrict mobility has played a greater role in creating and sustaining the “educational market” than charter schools. There is also a substantial amount of student movement from charter schools to school districts. Regression analyses suggested that the relationship between demographic and achievement variables and the different types of student mobility differed across the two sectors. We also document regional differences in mobility patterns, …
