Putting The ‘D’ Into The Oecd – The Dac In The Cold War Years, Richard Woodward Sep 2021

Putting The ‘D’ Into The Oecd – The Dac In The Cold War Years, Richard Woodward

Books/Book Chapters

This chapter charts the DAC’s Cold War history. During this period the DAC established much of the institutional and intellectual scaffolding of international development cooperation. Moreover, participation in the DAC also orchestrated a quiet revolution in the identities of its members, forging them into an imagined community of donors in which the supply of development assistance came to be seen as a routine function of modern industrialised states. Although the Cold War provided the overarching backdrop, the chapter also teases out some of the other key features of the landscape inhabited by the DAC and how they constrained and enabled …

Inferring Tax Compliance From Pass-Through: Evidence From Airbnb Tax Enforcement Agreements, Andrew J. Bibler, Keith F. Teltser, Mark J. Tremblay Sep 2021

Inferring Tax Compliance From Pass-Through: Evidence From Airbnb Tax Enforcement Agreements, Andrew J. Bibler, Keith F. Teltser, Mark J. Tremblay

Molasky Family Department of Economics and Real Estate Faculty Research

Tax enforcement is especially costly when market participants are difficult to observe. The benefits of enforcement depend crucially on pre-enforcement compliance. We derive an upper bound on pre-enforcement compliance from the pass-through of newly enforced taxes. Using data on Airbnb listings and the platform’s voluntary collection agreements, we find that taxes are paid on, at most, 24% of Airbnb transactions prior to enforcement. We also find that demand for Airbnb listings is inelastic, driving three key insights: the tax burden falls disproportionately on renters, the excess burden is small, and tax enforcement is relatively ineffective at reducing local Airbnb activity.

Like with many other social movements, the internet has been a tool in spreading awareness of a cause and allowing people the opportunity …

An Examination Of Yoga To Improve Symptoms Of Post-Traumatic Stress In Firefighters, Amanda Joy Weathers-Meyer Sep 2021

An Examination Of Yoga To Improve Symptoms Of Post-Traumatic Stress In Firefighters, Amanda Joy Weathers-Meyer

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Firefighters routinely experience traumatic events while executing their daily occupational duties; in turn, this elevates their risk of experiencing post-traumatic stress symptomatology (PTSS). To successfully contend with repeated trauma exposure, effective and culturally appropriate treatment options for firefighters are needed. A growing body of literature shows that yoga effectively reduces PTSS, notably with those in male-dominated fields. Despite these encouraging findings, the impact of yoga on PTSS among fire service personnel has yet to be examined. Therefore, this dissertation aimed to: (a) obtain preliminary data on yoga’s effectiveness to reduce PTSS in firefighters, (b) investigate cultural appropriateness and firefighter receptivity …

Managing The Energy Trilemma In The Philippines, Josef Teofisto T. Yap, Aaron Joseph P. Gabriola, Chrysogonus F. Herrera

Ateneo School of Government Publications

Background

The transition to an energy mix with lower carbon emissions is hampered by the existence of the so-called Energy Trilemma. The primary consequence is a trade-off between various objectives of energy policy, e.g., equity and sustainability. This conflict can lead to policy gridlock if policymakers are unable to prioritize the goals. This paper proposes a framework and methodology to manage the trilemma by applying methods related to multi-criteria decision-making in order to assign weights to the various components of the trilemma.

Results

Following the International Energy Agency (IEA), an expanded concept of energy security is adopted and translates to …

Psychology

Single-use plastic consumption is at an all-time high and threatens environmental and human health. College campuses in particular serve as a hub for single-use plastics due to their convenience for students on the go. The present research tests whether social comparison information can influence self-perceptions of single-use plastic consumption and motivate behavior change within the college campus environment. In a controlled experiment, we measured college students' existing plastic water bottle usage and gave them false feedback about their behaviors and relative standing to their classmates: participants in comparison conditions learned they were either above or below average in their plastic …

John Rawls crafts a natural duty of justice to legitimize a duty to obey and support a just political institution. In creating this natural duty, Rawls assumes an objective standard of justice, which has significant implications on his natural duty. Political institutions often have aspects of justice and injustice, and in this paper I examine the implications of this gradient of justice and how it affects the resulting duty that Rawls identifies. In addition to this examination, the consequences of an imperfect duty resulting from a political institution which is not perfectly just will also be addressed and Rawls’ principle, …
