Coming From Behind: The Mindset Of Overcoming Adversity, Gabriel Mccurtis

Doctor of Strategic Leadership (DSL) Capstone Abstracts

This book is framed around an actual event experienced by Dr. Gabriel McCurtis in the spring of 1975. While a senior at Ventura High School, located in the coastal region of Southern California, Gabriel prepared for the Ventura County Channel League Track and Field Finals that involved several Ventura and Santa Barbara County schools. Gabriel ran the 120-yard high hurdles in 14.8 seconds earlier in the season, which was a good time; however, he experienced a few nasty falls and hit hurdles during the mid-course of the year, which caused him to lose. This book elucidates the various lessons, principles, …

Impact Of Cell Phone Use During Face-To-Face Social Interaction, Silvia Omboni, Kate Lopez

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

This study is about the effect of cell phone use during face-to-face social interactions. Past research has shown that cell phone use decreases levels of enjoyment during social interactions, thus we conducted a conceptual replication of Dwyer et al. (2017) study to test this. We predicted that participants who used their phones during a social interaction will experience lower levels of enjoyment compared to participants who did not use their cell phones.

Would You Trust A Woman? The Impact Of Gender On Organizational Trust In Student Leadership At Universities, Abigail Heller, Delaney Snead

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

We performed an extension study on a previous research article My Fair Lady? Inferring Organizational Trust from the Mere Presence of Women in Leadership Roles and applied it to college students at Longwood University. The research question being examined was whether or not female student leaders are perceived to show more organizational trust than male student leaders. We hypothesized that female student leaders would be more trusted than male student leaders within the organizations of the Student Government Association (SGA) and Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL).

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

The aim of this research study was to explore factors related to stranger interaction and compliment type. Specifically, does the complimenting type, attire, or physical appearance, affect the estimation of the compliment's value on the receiver. Our prediction was that participants would underestimate their compliment's value on the receiver, if they gave an attire compliment, as compared to giving a physical appearance compliment.

Investigating Smartphone Presence On Social Enjoyment During Various Conversations, Jamiah Sutton, Cicely Dunaway

We predict that during casual conversations social interaction enjoyment levels will not be affected whether there is a smartphone or not compared to in meaningful conversations enjoyment levels would be higher without the presence of a smartphone versus no smartphone. Clothing And Compliments, Eva Copenhaver, Alexander Elliot, Jacob Gagat Oct 2021

Clothing And Compliments, Eva Copenhaver, Alexander Elliot, Jacob Gagat

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

We seek to see if the clothing a compliment receiver wears will affect how people perceive the importance of their compliments. If a participant compliments a confederate wearing informal clothing, they will then perceive their compliments as being less valuable than if they were to compliment a confederate with formal clothing. We did this by having individuals fill out a survey that evaluates how they believe their compliment will make someone feel. Then they went out and complimented a confederate. And finally, they took one more survey that evaluated how they believe their compliment made the individual feel.

Why Is Chester, Pennsylvania, So Poor?, John P. Caskey Oct 2021

Why Is Chester, Pennsylvania, So Poor?, John P. Caskey

Economics Faculty Works

Chester is one of the poorest cities in Pennsylvania. Chester’s poverty is often blamed on a lack of local job opportunities. But a far more important factor is the concentration of the region’s low-cost rental housing in the City. Much of this housing consists of project-based government-subsidized apartments that are restricted to low-income households. In addition, Chester has an abundant supply of antiquated private housing with low rental rates. Low-cost housing is relatively scarce in the county surrounding Chester. Poor households move to Chester, or remain in Chester, because that is where they can afford to live.

Covid-19 Impacts On Electronic Resource Usage At A Regional University, Daniel Moody, Rickey D. Best Oct 2021

Covid-19 Impacts On Electronic Resource Usage At A Regional University, Daniel Moody, Rickey D. Best

The Southeastern Librarian

An analysis of electronic resource usage at a regional university in the southeast during the COVID-19 pandemic showed interesting results. While it was anticipated that movement to online instruction would increase usage of electronic resources, it was discovered that overall usage actually declined for those resources. Virtual reference transactions, however, increased during the pandemic. When meas-uring downloads of full-text of both journals and e-Books in the health sciences, humanities, social sci-ences, and physical sciences, it was discovered that the first three subject areas showed a double digit percentage decline in use, with only the physical sciences showing a decline of …

Distilling A Collection: Creating A Distilling, Fermenting, And Brewing Special Collection At The James E. Walker Library, Alan Boehm, Susan J. Martin, Rachel Kirk

The Southeastern Librarian

This essay recounts the steps we took to launch the new Distilling, Fermenting, and Brewing Collection in our Special Collections department. It began with the routine task of weeding our general collection but quickly led to other activities which included a broader collection analysis; consideration of campus, local and state resources; consultation with development and fundraising staff; and research in the anti-quarian trade. Knowing what we had and what we could acquire in the book market, surmising the po-tential for private and industry support, and understanding the multiple scholarly possibilities embed-ded in our collection, we embarked on building a resource …

A survey was designed to assess and evaluate CWU researchers’ needs for RDS and to explore the feasibility of launching an RDS program at CWU Libraries. “School Hard” And Traditional Education In The Buffyverse Alia R. Tyner-Mullings, Alia R. Tyner

Publications and Research

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was once heralded as a beacon of feminist power on television in a sea of one-dimensional wives, girlfriends, and supporting characters. Joss Whedon, its creator, has been hailed as a feminist icon and a lifesaver of kids and adults struggling with being different (Cochran). “Geeks love Joss Whedon” according to a 2012 Wired article: “His characters are smart and self-aware. He’s steeped in pop culture and has a clever way with twists and turns of science fiction tropes […] plus, he writes female character who kick ass, which makes him so rare as to be sui …

Explaining Intergovernmental Conflict In The Covid-19 Crisis: The United States, Canada, And Australia, Andre Lecours, Daniel Beland, Alan Fenna, Tracy Beck Fenwick, Mireille Paquet, Philip Rocco, Alex Waddan

Political Science Faculty Research and Publications

The Covid-19 pandemic produced more significant immediate intergovernmental conflict in the U.S. than in Australia and Canada. This article considers three variables for this cross-national divergence: presidentialism versus parliamentarism; vertical party integration; and strength of intergovernmental arrangements. We find that the U.S. presidential system, contrary to parliamentarism in Canada and Australia, provided an opportunity for a populist outsider skeptical of experts to win the presidency and pursue a personalized style that favored intergovernmental conflict in times of crisis. Then, the intergovernmental conflict-inducing effect of the Trump presidency during the pandemic was compounded by the vertical integration of political parties, which …
