A review of Grade Herd Recording during the 1963-64 season.

THERE was a substantial increase in the number of cows which were recorded in 1963-64 compared with 1962-63 (23,520 and 22,635 respectively).

This season's figure represents 20.4 per cent, of all cows in the dairying districts.

The number of cows which completed lactation and therefore whose yields were included in the averages, rose from 17,258 to 19,011.

Recent research into milking machine operation has proved that the belief of old-time hand-milkers that fast milking was good milking was soundly based.

In current practice the emphasis is on convenient shed and yard design and systematic routine in handling the cows. This permits a high throughput of cows and a high output of milk per labour unit.

The multi-timer designed and built by Mr. G. W. R. Scott and described in this article will prove most valuable for pinpointing where time is lost.

Some studies have incriminated raw milk as a reservoir of the staphylococcus organisms as the vehicle of transmission. Recently Cheddar cheese has been implicated as the contaminating agent in food poisoning outbreaks traced to dairy products. One criterion used to determine the quality of milk is based upon its bacterial content. This immediately emphasizes the problems of determining milk quality. Bacteriological tests are, at best, only estimates of the number or the activity of the organisms present. Since its introduction to South Dakota dairy farms, the bulk tank has continued to increase in popularity. Its increased acceptance has caused new problems in determining milk quality. Grain feeding is an important part of a dairy feeding program. Grain supplies energy in a concentrated form and when fed as a supplement to forage permits cows to maintain high levels of production. The addition of the Streptococcus lactis culture in the pasteurized milk was studied, in an attempt to find the effects of the culture in prolonging shelf life of the milk. Various concentrations of the culture were tried to find the optimum concentration that would give favorable effect on keeping quality of the milk. It was found that the addition of Streptococcus lactis culture at the rate of 0.0001 percent has shown promising effects in prolonging shelf life of the milk at the storage temperature of 40 F.
