Feasibility Of Applying Motion Magnification In Subsurface Defect Detection For Concrete And Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Specimens, Nagavardhani Malineni

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Irrespective of size and complexity, every civil infrastructure needs certain scrutiny regarding its structural health to ensure its serviceability during its lifetime. In olden times such scrutiny was done with the aid of destructive testing methods using sensors that required cumbersome and expensive installations and led to the destruction of at least part of the tested specimen. However, in recent times, many non-destructive methods, such as acoustic emission testing, electromagnetic testing, and laser testing methods have emerged, leaving the specified tested specimen undisturbed. With the advancement in sensor technology like motion magnification and with the help of access to high-speed …

Environmental Controls Of Greenhouse Fluxes In Freshwater Wetlands Across The Globe, Samira Jahan Jan 2023

Environmental Controls Of Greenhouse Fluxes In Freshwater Wetlands Across The Globe, Samira Jahan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Freshwater wetlands can contribute significantly to the global carbon budget as a net source or sink of the major greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes such as carbon dioxide (FCO2) and methane (FCH4). The amount of GHG fluxes in the freshwater wetlands is highly variable and depends on a range of environmental drivers. These wetlands are commonly hypothesized to be net sinks (i.e., burial) of FCO2 and net sources (emission) of FCH4 at the monthly to annual scales. Understanding the environmental controls on the wetland GHG fluxes is essential for an accurate estimation of the global …

DBPs have been shown to pose a cancer risk to consumers. In this report, the focus is on two types of DBPs, trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). The cancer risks associated with DBPs are analyzed through ingestion and inhalation pathways. Ingestion and inhalation consist of common water uses like drinking, cooking, or bathing. In addition to this, DBPs have been shown to increase …

Quantifying Geogrid Reinforcement Mechanism In Roadway Performance Using Cyclic Plate Load (Cpl) Test, G.S. Ellithy, A. Crippa Jan 2023

Quantifying Geogrid Reinforcement Mechanism In Roadway Performance Using Cyclic Plate Load (Cpl) Test, G.S. Ellithy, A. Crippa

Publications

For decades, geogrids have been used successfully to improve performance in both paved and unpaved roadway construction. Even though the current state of practice differentiates between the design methodology incorporating geogrids in paved and unpaved roadways, the true improvement contribution of geogrids is to the base layer, or to the layer that is placed directly on top of it. It has been established that the three reinforcement mechanisms by which geogrids enhance roadway performance are: lateral restraint, bearing capacity increase and membrane tension support. In order to quantify these mechanisms and their contribution to the roadway performance improvement, two Cyclic …

An Analysis Of The Influence Of Speed On Fatal Accidents In Ohio, Megan Johnson Jan 2023

An Analysis Of The Influence Of Speed On Fatal Accidents In Ohio, Megan Johnson

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Through data collected by NHTSA and FARS, Ohio crash data resulting in fatalities were analyzed through four different breakdowns to determine variables correlating to the fatalities. The breakdowns include dividing data from overall Ohio data, reports involving speeding, then from there to single-vehicle crashes. That data was divided down to only include male drivers and then finally only motorcycles. This data was analyzed as it was broken down to find trends with each category. Through these analyses, the trends were developed to suggest recommendations to implement through education and laws to help reduce the number of crashes resulting in fatalities.

Privately-Owned Versus Shared Automated Vehicle: The Roles Of Utilitarian And Hedonic Beliefs, Fatemeh Nazari, Yellitza Soto, Mohamadhossein Noruzoliaee

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Transportation systems will be likely transformed by the emergence of automated vehicles (AVs) promising for safe, convenient, and efficient mobility, especially if used in shared systems (shared AV or SAV). However, the potential tendency is observed towards owning AV as a private asset rather than using SAV. This calls for a research on investigating individuals’ attitude towards AV in comparison with SAV to recognize the barriers to the public’s tendency towards SAV. To do so, the present study proposes a modeling framework based on the theories in behavioral psychology to explain individuals’ preference for owning AV over using SAV, built …

Finite Element Analysis Of Compaction Load To Investigate The Stress-Deformation Behavior Of Soil Geosynthetic Composite Mass: A Case Study, Truc Phan, Meen-Wah Gui, Thang Pham

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

When building Soil Geosynthetic Composite (SGC) walls, fill compaction is normally carried out by operating a compactor in a general direction parallel to the wall face. In other words, a moving point or area load is often used to apply a compaction load on a newly installed soil lift. Pham (2009) and Wu and Pham (2010) demonstrated that the compaction-induced stress (CIS) caused by multiple passes of a compactor moving toward or away from a section can be calculated by taking into account the compaction load applied directly above the section under consideration using a simplified stress path proposed by …

While numerous conventional POU technologies exist (e.g., boiling water, POU chlorination), new emerging POU technologies (e.g., using novel materials or advanced processes) have been coined by developers to be lower cost with higher treatment …

Predictions Of The Dynamic Complex Modulus Of Non-Conventional Asphalt Concrete Using Machine Learning Techniques, Annie Benson Jan 2023

Predictions Of The Dynamic Complex Modulus Of Non-Conventional Asphalt Concrete Using Machine Learning Techniques, Annie Benson

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The complex dynamic modulus (|E*|) is a characterization property that defines the stiffness of an asphalt mixture. The dynamic modulus can be found through lab testing or predictions. Since lab testing can be time-consuming and expensive, the prediction method can be used as an alternative method. While a statistical method has been traditionally used for the |E*| prediction such as the Witczak’s predictive equations, machine learning (ML) is recently emerging as an alternative way that |E*| predictions can be made. This research attempted to predict the |E*| using several ML techniques including linear regression, support vector machines (SVM), decision trees, …
