Investigating Scalable Manufacturing Of High-Conductivity Wires And Coatings From Ultra-Long Carbon Nanotubes, Pouria Khanbolouki Nov 2017

Investigating Scalable Manufacturing Of High-Conductivity Wires And Coatings From Ultra-Long Carbon Nanotubes, Pouria Khanbolouki

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a promising candidate for next generation of electrical wirings and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials due to their exceptional mechanical and electrical properties. Wires and coatings from ultralong nanotubes that are highly crystalline, well-aligned and densely packed can achieve this goal. High-performance CNT conductors will be relatively lightweight and resistant to harsh conditions and therefore can potentially replace current conductors in many industries including aerospace, automotive, gas and oil.

This thesis investigates a new manufacturing approach, based on conventional solution coating and wire drawing methods, to fabricate high conductivity wires and coatings from ultra-long carbon nanotubes. …

Effect Of Alignment, Sizing, And Manufacturing Method On Mechanical Properties Of Recycled Carbon Fiber Composites, Nekoda Van De Werken

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The exceptional combination of properties offered by carbon fiber composites has propelled their incorporation into high performance markets such as aerospace, wind energy, luxury cars and sporting goods. While the use of carbon fiber in these sectors is expected to continue to increase, the high price and energy cost associated with carbon fiber production acts as a significant barrier of entry into larger volume markets, such as the automotive industry. One method of navigating this transition is through the use of recycled carbon fiber composites.

Carbon fiber reclamation can produce fibers with up to 90% and 100% of the strength …

A Comparison Of Sensitivity Metrics For Two-Stage Ignition Behavior In Rapid Compression Machines, David Wilson, Casey Allen Nov 2017

A Comparison Of Sensitivity Metrics For Two-Stage Ignition Behavior In Rapid Compression Machines, David Wilson, Casey Allen

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A rapid compression machine (RCM) multi-zone model is used to simulate the ignition of primary reference fuel (PRF) mixtures that exhibit two-stage ignition behavior. Sensitivity coefficients for each reaction in the PRF mechanism are calculated from four different metrics: (1) first-stage energy release, (2) first-stage pressure rise, (3) first-stage ignition delay time, and (4) total ignition delay time. The sensitivity coefficients are used to provide four unique rankings, and the rankings are compared using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient. Special emphasis is given to comparing the rankings based on first-stage energy release and total ignition delay time. The level of agreement …

Manipulating Electromagnetic Waves With Enhanced Functionalities Using Nonlinear And Chiral Metamaterials, Sinhara Rishi Malinda Silva Nov 2017

Manipulating Electromagnetic Waves With Enhanced Functionalities Using Nonlinear And Chiral Metamaterials, Sinhara Rishi Malinda Silva

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Metamaterials are artificial structures, which periodically arranged to exhibit fascinating electromagnetic properties, not existing in nature. A great deal of research in the field of metamaterial was conducted in a linear regime, where the electromagnetic responses are independent of the external electric or magnetic fields. Unfortunately, in linear regime the desired properties of metamaterials have only been achieved within a narrow bandwidth, around a fixed frequency. Therefore, nonlinearity is introduced into metamaterials by merging meta-atoms with well-known nonlinear materials. Nonlinear metamaterials are exploited in this dissertation to introduce and develop applications in microwave frequency with broadband responses. The nonlinearity was …

Integration Of Thin Film Tpv Cells To Cvd Diamond Heat Spreaders, Emma J. Renteria Nov 2017

Integration Of Thin Film Tpv Cells To Cvd Diamond Heat Spreaders, Emma J. Renteria

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

In this work, techniques to isolate thermophotovoltaic (TPV) devices from the growth substrate and their subsequent integration with Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) diamond heat spreaders will be discussed, with the envisioned goal of fabricating thermally managed cells. CVD diamond heat spreaders are a great option for thermal management of TPV cells. The key requirement, however, is the bonding of the TPV cell directly onto the diamond wafer without the presence of thick (>350 μm) growth substrates, which can offer significant thermal resistance.

The first approach is to release GaSb epitaxial layers from GaSb substrates. However, this is challenging due …

High Power Microwave Metamaterial Based Passive And Active Devices, Hamide Seidfaraji Nov 2017

High Power Microwave Metamaterial Based Passive And Active Devices, Hamide Seidfaraji

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The goal of this dissertation is to design novel metamaterials for High Power Microwave devices. Metamaterials (MTM) are artificial periodic structures, which support reversed Cherenkov radiation and backward wave propagation. Microwave sources transform the kinetic energy of an electron beam into microwaves through the interaction of the electrons with a periodic slow wave structures (SWS). Here, a metamaterial (MTM) waveguide is proposed for use in a microwave oscillator instead of a SWS. The interaction of a multi-beam cathode with a set of MTM structures inside a cylindrical waveguide is studied and analyzed.

Group theory is used to design a metamaterial …

Design And Modeling Of A High-Power Periodic Spiral Antenna With An Integrated Rejection Band Filter, Jonathan M. O'Brien

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work details the design and fabrication of an ultra-wideband periodic spiral antenna (PSA) with a notch filter embedded directly into the radiating aperture. Prototype fabrication of the PSA reveals long assembly time due to forming the antenna element, therefore modifications are made to allow fabricating the antenna elements on a thin, flexible, Polyimide substrate. A transmission line model is develop to support the updated configuration of the antenna elements. In addition, a symmetric spurline filter is integrated into the arms of the spiral antenna in order to address the common problem of interference in ultra-wideband systems. For the first …

Mechanistic Modeling Of Nanoparticle-Stabilized Supercritical Co2 Foams And Its Implication In Field-Scale Eor Applications, Doris Patricia Ortiz Maestre Nov 2017

Mechanistic Modeling Of Nanoparticle-Stabilized Supercritical Co2 Foams And Its Implication In Field-Scale Eor Applications, Doris Patricia Ortiz Maestre

LSU Master's Theses

Previous experimental studies show that nanoparticle-stabilized supercritical CO2 foams (or, NP CO2 foams) can be applied as an alternative to surfactant foams, in order to reduce CO2 mobility in gas injection enhanced oil recovery (EOR). These nanoparticles, if chosen correctly, can be an effective foam stabilizer attached at the fluid interface in a wide range of physicochemical conditions.

By using NP CO2 foam experiments available in the literature, this study performs two tasks: (i) presenting how a mechanistic foam model can be used to fit experimental data and determine required model parameters, and (ii) investigating the …

State-Based Peridynamic Particle Method, Siavash Nikravesh Kazeroni Nov 2017

State-Based Peridynamic Particle Method, Siavash Nikravesh Kazeroni

Civil Engineering ETDs

In this study, a novel discrete Peridynamics framework called the “State-Based Peridynamic Particle Model (SPPM)” is introduced. In this approach, a solid body is simulated by neither solving differential equations nor integral equations; instead, the simulation is accomplished by directly solving discrete systems of equations using finite summations. SPPM is formulated for a random distribution of particles, hence, it can be considered as a meshfree method. The assumptions of continuity and homogeneity are not necessary for this approach. The SPPM is a generalization of the “State-Based Peridynamic Lattice Model (SPLM)”. In the SPLM formulation, for sake of simplicity and computational …

Evaluation Of Energy Released From Nuclear Criticality Excursions In Process Solutions, Corey Michael Skinner Nov 2017

Evaluation Of Energy Released From Nuclear Criticality Excursions In Process Solutions, Corey Michael Skinner

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

Typically, the staff of a nonreactor nuclear facility or a processing facility involving nuclear material are not expected to have a strong technical background in nuclear criticality physics, as that is not the purpose of these sites, yet handle material with the potential to undergo a criticality excursion. Such excursions have occurred 22 times in the past, 21 of which involved an aqueous solution material. Therefore, it would be useful to have a general model capable of providing a quick estimation of the consequences of a criticality excursion in a processing plant. To this end, correlations developed utilizing experimental data …

Both Adhe And A Separate Nadph-Dependent Alcohol Dehydrogenase Gene, Adha, Are Necessary For High Ethanol Production In Thermoanaerobacterium Saccharolyticum, Tianyong Zheng, Daniel G. Olson, Sean J. Murphy, Xiongjun Shao, Liang Tian, Lee Lynd

Dartmouth Scholarship

Thermoanaerobacterium saccharolyticum has been engineered to produce ethanol at ∼90% theoretical yield and titer of 70 g/L. Its ethanol-producing ability has drawn attention to its metabolic pathways, which could potentially be transferred to other organisms of interest. Here we report that the iron-containing AdhA is important for ethanol production in the high-ethanol strain of T. saccharolyticum (LL1049). A single-gene deletion of adhA in LL1049 reduced ethanol production by ∼50%, whereas multiple gene deletions of all annotated alcohol dehydrogenases except adhA and adhE did not affect ethanol production. Deletion of adhA in wild-type T. saccharolyticum reduced NADPH-linked ADH activity (acetaldehyde-reducing) by …

Experimental Study Of High-Temperature Range Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage, Chatura Wickramaratne Nov 2017

Experimental Study Of High-Temperature Range Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage, Chatura Wickramaratne

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Among all thermal energy storage (TES) systems, latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) attracts high interest due to its high energy density and high exergetic efficiency. Due to the high enthalpy of fusion and low cost, inorganic salts are becoming popular as phase change materials and are used as the storage media in LHTES systems. The main drawbacks for the inorganic salts are their low thermal conductivity and high reactivity above 500°C. Therefore, designing a cost-effective containment at these conditions with longevity is a challenge. Macro-encapsulation of the PCM is one way to solve both the PCM containment issue as …

Analysis Of The Joint Impact Of Atmospheric Turbulence And Refractivity On Laser Beam Propagation, Victor A. Kulikov, Mikhail Vorontsov Nov 2017

Analysis Of The Joint Impact Of Atmospheric Turbulence And Refractivity On Laser Beam Propagation, Victor A. Kulikov, Mikhail Vorontsov

Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications

A laser beam propagation model that accounts for the joint effect of atmospheric turbulence and refractivity is introduced and evaluated through numerical simulations. In the numerical analysis of laser beam propagation, refractive index inhomogeneities along the atmospheric propagation path were represented by a combination of the turbulence-induced random fluctuations described in the framework of classical Kolmogorov turbulence theory and large-scale refractive index variations caused by the presence of an inverse temperature layer. The results demonstrate that an inverse temperature layer located in the vicinity of a laser beam’s propagation path may strongly impact the laser beam statistical characteristics including the …

Sustained Flow Index: A Stochastic Measure Of Freeway Performance, Siavash Shojaat Nov 2017

Sustained Flow Index: A Stochastic Measure Of Freeway Performance, Siavash Shojaat

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The capacity of a road addresses its quantitative traffic carrying ability. The estimation of capacity as a parameter to assess traffic flow performance on freeway facilities has received considerable attention in the literature. Research into the traffic operation at high volumes reveals that the capacity of freeways is not a fixed number, but rather a random variable. Thus, in a stochastic approach to freeway capacity of estimation, the capacity is treated as a random variable generated from a population of flow observations, stemmed from a certain distribution function. Since the type of capacity distribution function is generally not known with …

A Multi-Scale Approach For Modeling Shock Ignition And Burn Of Granular Hmx, Pratap Thamanna Rao Nov 2017

A Multi-Scale Approach For Modeling Shock Ignition And Burn Of Granular Hmx, Pratap Thamanna Rao

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) in confined, low-density granular HMX (65%-85% Theoretical Maximum Density, TMD) occurs by a complex mechanism that involves compaction shock interactions within the material. Piston driven DDT experiments indicate that detonation is abruptly triggered by the interaction of a strong burn-supported secondary shock and a piston-supported primary (input) shock, where the nature of the interaction depends on initial packing density and primary shock strength. These interactions influence transition by affecting hot-spot formation within the micro-structure during pore collapse. In this study, meso-scale simulations of hot-spot formation in shock loaded granular HMX are used to guide the development of …

Tensile Experimentation Of Structural Aluminum Studying Void Growth, Scott Gampert

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Uni-axial tensile tests were conducted on multiple dog-bone shaped poly-crystalline Aluminum specimens. The goal for this study was to understand the effects of voiding in structural aluminum and how voids grow under tension. The voids were represented by simply drilling and reaming one or more holes in varying patterns in the center of the sample. The testing clearly showed that the different hole patterns affect the area growth of voids. It also compares the developmental growth of a plasticity zone around samples with one hole to a previous study done with a different specimen shape(Ray,2003). In order to look at …
