Applying Heterogeneous Teams Of Robotic Agents Using Hybrid Communications To Mapping And Education, Jonathan M. West

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Robotic agents are being increasingly utilized to carry out tasks that are difficult or dangerous for humans. Many of these missions are best performed by heterogeneous teams of agents with various individual abilities. Communication among agents and with operators is a critical element in the performance and efficiency of these missions. Although radio frequency communications dominate the robotic networking field, they are limited in range and bandwidth due to spectrum congestion and subject to interference from noise or hostile jamming and can be intercepted. Optical communication has many advantages such as higher bandwidth and focused beam, however the line-of-sight requirement …

Multiple Consecutive Recapture Of Rigid Nanoparticles Using A Solid-State Nanopore Sensor, Jungsoo Lee Nov 2017

Multiple Consecutive Recapture Of Rigid Nanoparticles Using A Solid-State Nanopore Sensor, Jungsoo Lee

Mechanical Engineering Research Theses and Dissertations

Solid‐state nanopore sensors have been used to measure the size of a nanoparticle by applying a resistive pulse sensing technique. Previously, the size distribution of the population pool could be investigated utilizing data from a single translocation, however, the accuracy of the distribution is limited due to the lack of repeated data. In this study, we characterized polystyrene nanobeads utilizing single particle recapture techniques, which provide a better statistical estimate of the size distribution than that of single sampling techniques. The pulses and translocation times of two different sized nanobeads (80 nm and 125 nm in diameter) were acquired repeatedly …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Detecting dangerous riding behaviors is of great importance to improve bicycling safety. Existing bike safety precautionary measures rely on dedicated infrastructures that incur high installation costs. In this work, we propose BikeMate, a ubiquitous bicycling behavior monitoring system with smartphones. BikeMate invokes smartphone sensors to infer dangerous riding behaviors including lane weaving, standing pedalling and wrong-way riding. For easy adoption, BikeMate leverages transfer learning to reduce the overhead of training models for different users, and applies crowdsourcing to infer legal riding directions without prior knowledge. Experiments with 12 participants show that BikeMate achieves an overall accuracy of 86.8% for lane …

The Effects Of Joule Heating On Electric-Driven Microfluidic Flow, Alexander P. Spitzer Nov 2017

The Effects Of Joule Heating On Electric-Driven Microfluidic Flow, Alexander P. Spitzer

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

This study sought out to more clearly understand the relationship between Joule heating and fluid flow in microfluidic environments, and more specifically, under what circumstances would the fluid flow in the device possibly hinder an experiment being run on it. It had been previous theorised that an electric field may produce turbulence and even vortices within the fluid, which this study attempted to reproduce. Several variables were tested, namely insulating and conducting fluids, higher and lower AC voltages, Newtonian vs. non-Newtonian fluids, and higher and lower DC voltages. A correlation between these variables and turbulent flow was found, with more …

Microgrid Energy Management With Flexibility Constraints: A Data-Driven Solution Method, Okan Ciftci Nov 2017

Microgrid Energy Management With Flexibility Constraints: A Data-Driven Solution Method, Okan Ciftci

LSU Master's Theses

Microgrid energy management is a challenging and important problem in modern power systems. Several deterministic and stochastic models have been proposed in the literature for the microgrid energy management problem. However, more accurate models are required to enhance flexibility of the microgrids when accounting for renewable energy and load uncertainties. This thesis proposes key contributions to solve the energy management problem for smart building (or small-scale microgrid). In Chapter 3, a deterministic energy management model is presented taking into account system flexibility requirements. Energy storage systems are deployed to enhance the grid flexibility and ramping capability. The objective function of …

Prevention Of Alkali-Silica Reaction (Asr) In Lightweight Wellbore Cements Containing Silica-Based Microspheres, Dylan Albers Nov 2017

Prevention Of Alkali-Silica Reaction (Asr) In Lightweight Wellbore Cements Containing Silica-Based Microspheres, Dylan Albers

LSU Master's Theses

Drilling through low pressure formations, either offshore or through depleted formations, requires the use of low density fluids to prevent lost circulation ensuring proper placement of cement for proper zonal isolation and structural integrity. Achieving these densities in cements can be done through foaming the cement, increasing water content, or using silica-based microspheres. Water extended cements are useful at densities down to 13 ppg below which only foaming and silica-based microspheres can be used. Each of these methods coming with individual limitations, with foamed cements being sensitive to high pressures and silica-based microspheres having chemical instability in the high alkalinity …

Comparing Laser Diffraction And Optical Microscopy For Characterizing Superabsorbent Polymer Particle Morphology, Size, And Swelling Capacity, Cole R. Davis, Stacey L. Kelly, Kendra Erk Nov 2017

Comparing Laser Diffraction And Optical Microscopy For Characterizing Superabsorbent Polymer Particle Morphology, Size, And Swelling Capacity, Cole R. Davis, Stacey L. Kelly, Kendra Erk

School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

In this study, we determined the accuracy and practicality of using optical microscopy (OM) and laser diffraction (LD) to characterize hydrogel particle morphology, size, and swelling capacity (Q). Inverse-suspension-polymerized polyacrylamide particles were used as a model system. OM and LD showed that the average particle diameter varied with the mixing speed during synthesis for the dry (10–120 lm) and hydrated (34–240 lm) particles. The LD volume and number mean diameters showed that a few large particles were responsible for the majority of the water absorption. Excess water present in the gravimetric swelling measurements led to larger Qs (8.2 6 0.37 …

Understanding Gas Sorption Mechanisms In Metal–Organic Materials Via Computational Experimentation, Katherine A. Forrest Nov 2017

Understanding Gas Sorption Mechanisms In Metal–Organic Materials Via Computational Experimentation, Katherine A. Forrest

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Metal–organic materials (MOMs), a type of porous crystalline structure composed of organic ligands jointed with metal ions, have captured the interest of scientists as potentially useful in gas sorption applications. Some of the most crucial avenues of investigation are in H2 storage (for use as a clean burning fuel source) and CO2 capture and sequestration (to remove the greenhouse gas from the environment).

A major advantage of MOMs for such applications is their high variability in terms of physical dimensions and chemical moieties, based on composition and synthesis conditions, making them potentially customizable for specific application if necessary structural characteristics …

Development, Energy, And Climate Change Policy: Enabling Sustainable Development Through Access To Energy, Robert J. Brecha Nov 2017

Development, Energy, And Climate Change Policy: Enabling Sustainable Development Through Access To Energy, Robert J. Brecha

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Human rights, human development, and climate change clearly overlap in many ways. Development, as quantified by the Human Development Index (HDI), for example, has historically been strongly correlated with energy consumption. This fact is recognized in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7, to “ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.” Currently the world is in the midst of a large wave of human migration, much of it involuntary and due to stymied development opportunities as well as political upheaval. Climate change will become, or already is, an exacerbating factor in migration dynamics.

A pertinent question is how …

Background: Children with obesity have hypertrophic cardiac remodeling. Hypertension is common in pediatric obesity, and may independently contribute to hypertrophy. We hypothesized that both the degree of obesity and ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) would independently associate with measures of hypertrophic cardiac remodeling in children.

Methods: Children, aged 8–17 years, prospectively underwent cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) and ABP monitoring. Left ventricular (LV) mass indexed to height2.7(LVMI), myocardial thickness and end-diastolic volume were quantified from a 3D LV model reconstructed from cine balanced steady state free precession images. Categories of remodeling were determined based on cutoff values for LVMI and …

Reconstructing Yeasts Phylogenies And Ancestors From Whole Genome Data, Bing Feng, Yu Ling, Lingxi Zhou, Roufan Xia, Fei Hu, Chao Liu

Faculty Publications

Phylogenetic studies aim to discover evolutionary relationships and histories. These studies are based on similarities of morphological characters and molecular sequences. Currently, widely accepted phylogenetic approaches are based on multiple sequence alignments, which analyze shared gene datasets and concatenate/coalesce these results to a final phylogeny with maximum support. However, these approaches still have limitations, and often have conflicting results with each other. Reconstructing ancestral genomes helps us understand mechanisms and corresponding consequences of evolution. Most existing genome level phylogeny and ancestor reconstruction methods can only process simplified real genome datasets or simulated datasets with identical genome content, unique genome markers, …

A Study Of Very Short Intermittent Ddos Attacks On The Performance Of Web Services In Clouds, Huasong Shan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks for web applications such as e-commerce are increasing in size, scale, and frequency. The emerging elastic cloud computing cannot defend against ever-evolving new types of DDoS attacks, since they exploit various newly discovered network or system vulnerabilities even in the cloud platform, bypassing not only the state-of-the-art defense mechanisms but also the elasticity mechanisms of cloud computing.

In this dissertation, we focus on a new type of low-volume DDoS attack, Very Short Intermittent DDoS Attacks, which can hurt the performance of web applications deployed in the cloud via transiently saturating the critical bottleneck resource of the …

Modelling Human Activity Through Structural Vibrations With Alternate Computational Devices To Increase Cost Efficiency, Elaine Patterson Nov 2017

Modelling Human Activity Through Structural Vibrations With Alternate Computational Devices To Increase Cost Efficiency, Elaine Patterson

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Every event that occurs has a reaction, whether it be a pebble causing ripples in a pond or a bullet distressing a wall. Within a structure, these vibrations caused by a specific event in a medium can be measured with an accelerometer, and just as the vibrations caused by a bullet differ observably from those caused by a pebble, vibrations caused by walking vary from those caused by falling, running or jumping. To the eye, these differences are slight to severe, but when that signal is dissected, it is identifiably unique by its cause and location with extensive applications from …

Development Of A Mode And Destination Type Joint Choice Model For Hurricane Evacuation, Ruijie Bian Nov 2017

Development Of A Mode And Destination Type Joint Choice Model For Hurricane Evacuation, Ruijie Bian

Universality Of Local Dissipation Scales In Turbulent Boundary Layer Flows With And Without Free-Stream Turbulence, Sabah F. H. Alhamdi, Sean C. C. Bailey Nov 2017

Universality Of Local Dissipation Scales In Turbulent Boundary Layer Flows With And Without Free-Stream Turbulence, Sabah F. H. Alhamdi, Sean C. C. Bailey

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Measurements of the small-scale dissipation statistics of turbulent boundary layer flows with and without free-stream turbulence are reported for Reτ ≈ 1000 (Reθ ≈ 2000). The scaling of the dissipation scale distribution is examined in these two boundary conditions. Results demonstrated that the local large-scale Reynolds number based on the measured longitudinal integral length scale fails to properly normalize the dissipation scale distribution near the wall in these two free-stream conditions due to the imperfect characterization of the upper bound of the inertial cascade by the integral length scale. A surrogate found from turbulent kinetic energy and …
