Optimizing The Use Of A Liquid Handling Robot To Conduct A High Throughput Forward Chemical Genetics Screen Of Arabidopsis Thaliana, B. Kirtley Amos, Victoria G. Pook, Seth Debolt
Horticulture Faculty Publications
Chemical genetics is increasingly being employed to decode traits in plants that may be recalcitrant to traditional genetics due to gene redundancy or lethality. However, the probability of a synthetic small molecule being bioactive is low; therefore, thousands of molecules must be tested in order to find those of interest. Liquid handling robotics systems are designed to handle large numbers of samples, increasing the speed with which a chemical library can be screened in addition to minimizing/standardizing error. To achieve a high-throughput forward chemical genetics screen of a library of 50,000 small molecules on Arabidopsis thaliana (Arabidopsis), protocols using a …

Senior Design Project For Engineers
This report explores a cloud network solution for the automotive industry. The project scope was defined with a problem statement. Robust connectivity solutions offered by the OEM manufacturers provide data communication between the customer and the connected car, but lack data communication from the customer to the private franchise dealers. This antiquated business model creates variation in operation from one dealer to the other and creates a challenge to apply a standardized solution. One fundamental requirement is to provide a network solution that can seamlessly integrate into existing hardware, software and process infrastructure.
The project group conducted interviews with two …

Benefication Of Estonian Phosphate Ore By Flotataion, Kadriann Tamm, Indrek Piir, Rein Kuusik, Kaia Tõnsuaadu
Beneficiation of Phosphates VIII
Sole active mining phosphate operation in European Union (EU) is in Finland Siilinjärvi with limited resources available for approximately next 20-30 years [1]. In this context it is important that Estonia holds the largest unused sedimentary phosphate rock reserve in EU. Estonian phosphate is a sedimentary rock composed of variegated sandstone that contains abundant remains (detritus) of (biogenic) phosphatic brachiopod shells [2]. Phosphate enriched beds occur stratigraphically at the transition between Cambrian and Ordovician and the phosphatic sandstones belong to Kallavere formation. The biogenic phosphate is dominated by francolite mineral phase. The P2O5 content of the sandstone beds is quite …

Redshirt In Engineering: A Model For Improving Equity And Inclusion, Donna C. Llewellyn, Ann Delaney, Janet Callahan
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The NSF-funded Redshirt in Engineering Consortium was formed in 2016 with the goal of enhancing the ability of academically talented but underprepared students coming from low-income backgrounds to successfully graduate with engineering degrees. The Consortium takes its name from the practice of redshirting in college athletics, with the idea of providing an extra year and support to help promising engineering students complete a bachelor’s degree. The Consortium builds on the success of three existing “academic redshirt” programs and expands the model to three new schools. The Existing Redshirt Institutions (ERIs) help mentor and train the new Student Success Partners (SSP), …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
The objective of this article is to establish a fatigue equation based on the true stress ratio for cement-treated aggregate base materials. The true stress ratio herein means the ratio of the stress and the true strength of the cement-treated aggregate base materials related to loading rates and curing times. The unconfined compressive strength tests and compressive resilience modulus tests were carried out under various loading rates and curing times of 3, 7, 14, 28, 60, 90 days, respectively. According to the test results, the relationship between the unconfined compressive strength (a mix design parameter in China) and the compressive …

Journal of Electrochemistry
The electrochemical oxidation of p-chlorophenol on porous Ti/BDD electrode cooperated with synergistic effect of cathode dechlorination was studied. Electrochemical degradation tests of p-chlorophenol were conducted in single and double compartment electrolytic cells separately, and the results showed that the mineralization happened mainly in the anode region. The product of chloride ions produced from the cathodic reduction of 4-chlorophenol in the single cell migrated to the anode region and further generated active chlorine toward electro-catalytic oxidation. At the same time, the chloride ion produced from the cathode of the double cell was difficult to be migrated to the anode region, which …

Chemical Technology, Control and Management
The problems of synthesis of adaptive observers are considered, for linear dynamic systems containing parameter identifiers, estimators of the initial and current state vectors. For a stable estimation of object parameters, an iterative process is used, based on the normalized decomposition of the matrix operator of the identification equation. These algorithms allow the stable identification of the parameters of the controlled objects on the basis of the use of regular computational procedures and thereby improve the quality of the functioning of the adaptive observing device.
