Social Robots As The Bride? Understanding The Construction Of Gender In A Japanese Social Robot Product, Jindong Liu Apr 2021

Social Robots As The Bride? Understanding The Construction Of Gender In A Japanese Social Robot Product, Jindong Liu

Human-Machine Communication

This study critically investigates the construction of gender on a Japanese hologram animestyle social robot Azuma Hikari. By applying a mixed method merging the visual semiotic method and heterogeneous engineering approach in software studies, the signs in Azuma Hikari’s anthropomorphized image and the interactivity enabled by the multimedia interface have been analyzed and discussed. The analysis revealed a stereotyped representation of a Japanese “ideal bride” who should be cute, sexy, comforting, good at housework, and subordinated to “Master”-like husband. Moreover, the device interface disciplines users to play the role of “wage earner” in the simulated marriage and reconstructs the gender …

Forms And Frames: Mind, Morality, And Trust In Robots Across Prototypical Interactions, Jaime Banks, Kevin Koban, Philippe De V. Chauveau Apr 2021

Forms And Frames: Mind, Morality, And Trust In Robots Across Prototypical Interactions, Jaime Banks, Kevin Koban, Philippe De V. Chauveau

Human-Machine Communication

People often engage human-interaction schemas in human-robot interactions, so notions of prototypicality are useful in examining how interactions’ formal features shape perceptions of social robots. We argue for a typology of three higher-order interaction forms (social, task, play) comprising identifiable-but-variable patterns in agents, content, structures, outcomes, context, norms. From that ground, we examined whether participants’ judgments about a social robot (mind, morality, and trust perceptions) differed across prototypical interactions. Findings indicate interaction forms somewhat influence trust but not mind or morality evaluations. However, how participants perceived interactions (independent of form) were more impactful. In particular, perceived task interactions fostered functional …

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

Carbamazepine (CBZ) is the most frequently detected pharmaceutical residues in aquatic environments effluent by wastewater treatment plants. Batch and column experiments were conducted to evaluate the removal of CBZ from ultra-pure water and wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent using raw zeolitic tuff (RZT) and surfactant modified zeolite (SMZ). Point zero net charge (pHpzc), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) were investigated for adsorbents to evaluate the physiochemical changes resulted from the modification process using Hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA-Br). XRD and FTIR showed that the surfactant modification of RZT has created an amorphous surface with new alkyl …

Understanding The Effect Of Adaptive Mutations On The Three-Dimensional Structure Of Rna, Justin Cook Apr 2021

Understanding The Effect Of Adaptive Mutations On The Three-Dimensional Structure Of Rna, Justin Cook

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are variations in the genome where one base pair can differ between individuals.1 SNPs occur throughout the genome and can correlate to a disease-state if they occur in a functional region of DNA.1According to the central dogma of molecular biology, any variation in the DNA sequence will have a direct effect on the RNA sequence and will potentially alter the identity or conformation of a protein product. A single RNA molecule, due to intramolecular base pairing, can acquire a plethora of 3-D conformations that are described by its structural ensemble. One SNP, rs12477830, which …

Developing A Multimedia Interface For Electrical Biosignal Interpretation, Christopher Cox Apr 2021

Developing A Multimedia Interface For Electrical Biosignal Interpretation, Christopher Cox

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

In the last ten years, a great deal of interest has been generated around the practice of using plants’ electrical signals to create sound or music. In order to render biosignals capable of producing sound electronically, some kind of interface is necessary that converts a plant’s natural electrical signals into data that a computer can understand. Existing commercial interfaces cost at minimum $3001,2 . Worse yet, two popular off-the-shelf interfaces conform their output signals to stereotypical human notions of what a plant might “sound like”. In this project we fabricated a simple but high-performance interface for less than $5 in …

Effect Of Humic Acid On Co2-Wettability In Sandstone Formation, Mujahid Ali, Faisal Ur Rahman Awan, Muhammad Ali, Ahmed Al-Yaseri, Muhammad Arif, Mónica Sánchez-Román, Alireza Keshavarz, Stefan Iglauer

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Hypothesis: Millions of tons of CO2 are stored in CO2 geological storage (CGS) formations (depleted oil reservoirs and deep saline aquifers) every year. These CGS formations naturally contain small concentrations of water-soluble organic components in particular humic acid (HA), which may drastically affect the rock wettability - a significant factor determining storage capacities and containment security. Hence, it is essential to characterise the effect of humic acid concentration on CO2-wettability and its associated impact on storage capacity.

Experimental: To achieve this, we measured advancing and receding contact angles at reservoir conditions using the pendant drop tilted plate method for various …

Development Of A Low-Cost Efficient Wireless Intelligent Sensor For Strain (Lewis-S) And Applications In Measuring Nonlinear Dynamics, Eric Robbins

Civil Engineering ETDs

Nonlinearities exist in all real-life systems and can be caused by behaviors such as large deformations, yielding, contact, etc. which can result in phenomena not found in linear testing. Considering nonlinear behavior in dynamic analyses can be beneficial to increase model predictability and can accurately characterize system responses. Generally, accelerometers are commonly used in linear and nonlinear vibration testing to obtain the acceleration response of a system. However, some systems may render the use of accelerometers problematic, or accelerometers may introduce limitations to measurement capabilities such that it can be beneficial to obtain experimental data using different sensors. In the …

Experimental Validation Of A 3d-Printed Millimeter Wave/Thz Power Combiner, Jacob C. Giese

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The terahertz band (THz) in the electromagnetic spectrum is an untapped resource that possesses unique features for nondestructive methods of material imaging and detection. However, little advancements have been made in regard to a practical long range portable THz device. The solution proposed is an oversized cylindrical waveguide termed Power Combiner, designed to combine 12 azimuthally aligned rectangular waveguides to produce power levels suitable for threat detection at secure distances. This paper explores the physical parameters of the power combiner and the power distribution network and creates the 12 signals that allow for modification at the input of the power …

Electrical Capacitance Measurements To Assess European Corn Borer Infestation In Maize, Mavrik D. Thomas Apr 2021

Electrical Capacitance Measurements To Assess European Corn Borer Infestation In Maize, Mavrik D. Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

The European Corn Borer (ECB), Ostrinia nubilalis, is an agricultural pest which bores small holes in the rind of maize stalks and then proceeds to consume the pith. Because most of the damage to the stalk is internal, it is difficult to quantify the damage to an individual stalk without time-consuming, manual examination. This work explored the hypothesis that internal damage could be detected and quantified using non-destructive, electromagnetic measurements. Laboratory experiments and numerical simulation studies predicted changes in capacitance of stalks due to hollow core ECB damage. A guarded probe device to measure electrical impedance from 500 Hz to …

Modeling Bus Bunching And Anti-Bunching Control Accounting For Signal Control And Passenger Swapping Behavior, Qi Xin, Rui Fu, Shaowei Yu, Satish V. Ukkusuri, Rui Jiang

Journal of Public Transportation

The conventional bus propagation process has two main shortcomings: one is bus bunching, the other is extra energy consumption by idling at signalized intersection and unexpected speed variation along the route. To overcome these problems simultaneously, an extended bus propagation model and an anti-bunching control are proposed. To extend the time-based bus propagation model, we employ finite state machine and intelligent driver model to establish a spatial-temporal based bus propagation model accounting for bus dynamic motion and passenger swapping behavior between bunching buses. To mitigate bus bunching and improve bus fuel economy in a cyber-traffic environment, an anticipated average speed …

Mesoscopic Traffic Simulation Model And Calibration Considering Stretching-Segment Design, Zhaocheng He, Xuanhua Lin, Peilin Nie, Ronghui Zhang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In order to make the simulation model fit the characteristics of urban traffic, both high accuracy and high performance, a lightweight mesoscopic traffic simulation system and the process of calibration are established. The speed-density model and vertical queue model are equivalent to the vehicle movement processes, the simulation accuracy and calibration efficiency are improved by the stretching-segment design at urban intersections of vertical queuing model, and the real individual vehicle information is used as the calibration data source. The application of the model in Xuancheng urban road network shows that, compared with the vertical queuing model, it can …

Anomaly-Handling In Lyapunov-Based Economic Model Predictive Control Via Empirical Models, Helen Durand

Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications

A question that faces data-driven autonomous systems is verification that they will perform in a safe manner despite changes in the environment on which they act over time or incomplete knowledge of the system model. This work analyzes closed-loop stability of nonlinear systems under Lyapunov-based economic model predictive control (LEMPC) with data-driven models in the case where it is desirable to have the ability to detect when the data-driven model is or becomes insufficiently accurate for maintaining the closed-loop state in an expected region of state-space. Implications of the results for false sensor measurement cyberattacks seeking to impact the fidelity …
