This report has been prepared to describe the history and present condition of a landslide area on Interstate Route I-75 in Covington, Kentucky, This landslide is one of several to be studied as part of a research project on the "Development of a Practical Method of Locating and Tracing Seepage Water in Unstable Slopes. Recent progress in structural engineering has been marked by the increased use of thin shells as load carrying members. In particular, shells of revolution have been widely utilized in the missile industry whereas shells of arbitrary shape have been incorporated in the architectural design of today's modern buildings. Missile applications have been extensively studied both statically and dynamically. However, architechural applications have generally been limited to the statics problem with little consideration being given to the dynamic behavior of these unique structures.

Energy dissipation problems are often encountered where pipelines discharge into open channels. Normal pipe flow velocities most often result in super-critical velocities in canals. These high velocities may cause scour, overtopping, and unstable flow in the channel.

The principal objective of the study was to find an efficient and economical design of a stilling basin transition from pipe flow to open channels. Pertinent variables were selected and their effects determined by extensive experimentation.

An efficient stilling basin was developed utilizing a short dissipator pipe on the wall opposite the inflow pipe. The optimum diameter, length, and differential elevation between center …

This thesis presents a study made to investigate problems involved in the design of certain radar augmentation devices. The task arose from the requirement to add realistic simulation of radar reflection characteristics to drone targets during an evaluation of the performance capability of the Falcon missile, conducted by Hughes Aircraft Company at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico. INTRODUCTION In Progress Report No.1, it was reported that the initial conception of the problem was that diaphragms act almost exclusively in shear when called upon to brace compression members, and that it had been decided to test single columns with finite widths of diaphragm attached, with width of the sheet being varied to provide a range of lateral support up to that which permitted full column strength, based on strong axis to be developed.
