P-V-T data for propyne have been fit using the Martin-Hou and the Benedict-Webb-Rubin equations of state. The Martin-Hou equation, with its constants calculated from the critical properties and a vapor pressure point for the gas, fit up to 1.1 to 1.5 times the critical density with deviations of less than 1%. The Benedict-Webb-Rubin equation, with its constants calculated by the method of Joffe, resulted in greater deviations in the low pressure region than did the Martin-Hou equation; however, it also provided a better approximation of the data at high pressures and lower temperatures. The best over-all fit was obtained using …

The electromotive deposition, storage and dissolution of hydrogen upon carbon electrodes having real surface areas varying from one meter²/ gram to one-hundred ten meters²/ gram vas inves-tigated.

It has been found that a correlation exists between hydrogen storage and real area of the inner electrode. However, it has been further shown that storage of electromotive hydrogen is only for short periods of time, that is, several hours.

The Corrosiveness Of Phenols, Edgar George Kaup

The effects of oxidizing agents, heat, light, and metallic catalysts on coloration in phenols is discussed, using data collected from the literature. The oxidation reaction is concluded to be the con-trolling factor in coloration. Corrosion data from laboratory experiments, field tests, and operating plants is presented for metals and non-metals in concentrated phenolic systems.

In this investigation, the ultraviolet absorption spectra and the batch photochemical hydrolysis of monochloroacetic and monobromoacetic acid, and their potassium and sodium salts, have been measured and compared with those existing in the literature.

The continuous photochemical hydrolysis of sodium chloroacetate has been investigated for the first time. The continuous photolysis of uranyl oxalate was investigated and used as a chemical actinometer.

Gaseous material in the reactant feed has been found to be important at low flow rates.

It is not the intent of this thesis to present the rules of FORTRAN; it is assumed that the reader is generally familiar with the principles of FORTRAN programming. Rather, this is an attempt to describe FORTRAN in relation to the compiler program it actually is -- a machine language program which translates FORTRAN statements to machine language instructions, the latter capable of being executed by the same computer. The FORTRAN statements will be interpreted in terms of the compiler program which performs the translation, and algorithms for these statements will be described.

Although the behavioral pattern of plain concrete in compression is fairly consistent, its tensile properties leave much to be desired. The laboratory investigation described here was an attempt to increase the tensile property of plain concrete by adding an epoxy resin compound to the mixture. The investigation included tests for both compressive and tensile strengths of the mixtures that were considered. The compressive strength tests were included to determine what effect, if any, the attempt to increase the tensile property had on compressive strength.

The inclusion of a single nonlinear element in a general N-loop network greatly complicates the resulting equations and prohibits a straightforward solution. The object of this investigation is to provide a method for solving such networks. In particular, a reduction of the network coefficient matrix will be considered in order to obtain one nonlinear equation and (N-1) linear equations. It will be shown that the form of the nonlinear equations is always the same, and a procedure for approximating the solution of equations of this type will be given.

Early in 1962, the Division of Rural Highways selected several base stabilization projects for construction during the 1962 season. These projects were to involve the addition of 1-1/2 to 3 inches of compacted granular base to existing, rural secondary, traffic-bound macadam roads. Since these roads were not intended to be surfaced, calcium chloride and sodium chloride were to be added to the additional granular base material in an attempt to retain or "hold" the aggregate on the road. This thesis is concerned with the telemetry of small DC signals from photomultiplier tubes. The circuitry must have a high input impedance so as not to load down the photomultiplier tube and a low output impedance which is capable of controlling the current through a small incandescent bulb. This bulb is used to illuminate a photoresistor. The output of the circuit consists of a variation of the resistance of the photoresistor. This variable resistance is conventionally converted into a variable audio frequency which is transmitted to the receiving station on a radio-frequency carrier. Control of a condensing steam heat exchanger by condensate throttling was investigated theoretically by a frequency response analysis. The theoretical analysis was verified by experimental operation of the heat exchanger.

The system was characterized by heat transfer calculations and Laplace transform functions. The transfer functions were used to complete a frequency response analysis of the system which predicted the controller settings, the stability of the system and its response to a step set point change. The calculations were verified by experimental operation and reasonable agreement was obtained.

The Margules equation as modified by Wohl for ternary liquid-vapor systems, is used to develop ternary activity coefficients at different concentrations and varying temperatures. Corresponding binary experimental data are necessary to mathematically obtain these ternary activity coefficients. A trial and error graphical technique is used to examine the ternary data for azeotropic conditions. Convergence on ternary graph paper can be easily detected after the first two trials. Divergence is an indication that the system under consideration is nonazeotropic.

Isobaric Vapor-Liquid Equilibria System : Benzene, Chlorobenzene, Phenol, Larry Madestau

Theses

Isobaric vapor-liquid equilibria were determined experimentally for the three binary systems benzene-chlorobenzene, benzene-phenol, and chlorobenzene-phenol; and for the corresponding ternary system benzene-chlorobenzene-phenol. Constants for the Chao modified Redlich-Kistler equations were calculated from the experimental data by the method of least squares. These constants were then used to predict vapor-liquid equilibria for the ternary system. The predicted values showed satisfactory agreement with those found experimentally.

Six furan resins and one epoxy resin were used in tests to determine coking values and gas evolution characteristics of the resins. The same resins, except the epoxy, were used as binders in extruded graphite rods to determine environmental factors affecting the coked density of the rods.

Coking values of the resins containing three different activators were determined by measuring residue remaining after heat treatment to 850° C. Coking values 54-56% were obtained with 8 phr to toluenesulfonic acid actiator.
