FENCING is the basis of the regeneration programme on the eroded Ord River catchment area, and the fences constructed must cross numerous creeks.

But heavy downpours of short duration characterise the wet season experienced in this area.

Because the rain falls on to bare, compacted ground, run-off is intense and gullies and creeks rise rapidly, causing serious damage to conventional fences and flood gates across watercourses.

"Deterioration of bridge decks has increased the interest in the corrosion of steel in concrete. A comprehensive review of literature on the subject of electrolytic corrosion of steel in concrete is presented in this thesis.

Development of theory from the literature leads to the following statements. There are two causes for electrolytic corrosion of steel in concrete, stray currents from direct current power sources and the formation of macro-cells within the structure. The corrosion caused by the macro-cells appears to be the more important of the two. Anodic areas exhibit corrosion of the steel and cracking of the concrete.

"The purpose of this investigation was to study the chemical oxidation of alkyl benzene sulfonates with potassium permanganate. ABS concentrations of 3, 5 and 10 mg/1, and potassium permanganate dosages of 0.5, 1.25, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, 20.0, 40.0 and 80.0 mg/1 were used. The study was made in deionized water at room temperature and a pH value of 8.5. A 5-hour detention period was provided. The ABS concentration, potassium permanganate concentration, foam volume and foam stability were the main parameters employed.

"The problem presented is a study, by simulation on an analog computer, of a time optimum "bang bang" control system with a second order plant. Phase plane analysis techniques are used to describe the performance of the second order plant under the action of a maximum effort controller. From this, the system logic is developed for time optimum response to a step reference input. A fast time model of the plant is used to obtain repeated high-speed extrapolations of the plant outputs, at the same time a linear predictor generates future values of the reference. "A digital computer technique is presented for predicting two parameters of underground natural gas storage reservoir performance: (1) the prediction of reservoir pressures and volumes, and (2) the prediction of optimum flow rate and pressure drawdown for a single well in accordance with the theory of water coning.

"A new technique for determining capillary pressure curves with a centrifuge has been developed and tested. Capillary pressure curves were determined for six cores by this technique and were compared to the curves for the same cores determined by the semi-permeable barrier technique. The technique differs from previously reported centrifuge techniques in that the centrifuge was slowly accelerated from zero to the maximum desired speed, rather than being held constant at particular, progressively higher speeds. "The dislocation theory, Zener-Stroh crack model, and the Petch relationship, which correlates fracture stress and grain size, were used to analyze the embrittlement of 2024 aluminum alloy tubes by liquid mercury.

Surface energy ratios, [formula], were determined for biaxial stress ratios of 1/2, 1, ∞. The values of the surface energy ratios considered were 4.24, 1.79, 1.46, respectively. As part of this study, an approximate Nabarro-Peierls frictional stress was calculated for each stress ratio"--Abstract, page 2.

"The purpose of this investigation was to study the effect of oxygen and nitrogen (in the alpha solid solution range) on the kinetics and electrochemistry of titanium dissolution in hydrofluoric acid. Dissolution rates, activation energies, difference effects, and potential measurements were determined with TiO_XN_Y sintered alloys and sheet metal. Values of x ranged from 0.01 to 0.126 and values of x. from 0.001 to 0.230.

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory Lunar Program, which is supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has two major projects underway. These are Ranger and Surveyor. The Ranger Project is in the flight stage whereas Surveyor is still in hardware development. The equipment of Ranger 3, 4, and 5 spacecrafts includes a radar altimeter to obtain radar reflection data, and a vidicon camera to obtain close-up pictures of the moon's surface. The data obtained in these flights will thus be available for analysis and comparison using the techniques outlined in this thesis.

In certain unique situations, a drop-inlet-type of culvert might be employed to a greater advantage than the standard box- or pipe-type culvert. A drop-inlet consists merely of a vertical drop-section at the upstream end of the culvert. The drop section is connected to the main barrel of the culvert by means of an elbow or merely a rightangle intersection. The entrance to the drop-section must collect and funnel the channel water into the drop section. Thus, intercepting dams and sidewalls may be needed to form the entrance.
