Proposed Remedial Design For Unstable Highway Embankment Foundation: I-64-6(6) 117, Bath County, Gordon D. Scott, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Early in 1966, during the construction of a large embankment between Stations 1738+00 and 1745+00 on I 64 in Bath County (I 64-6(6)117, SP 6-404-5G1), a serious slide occurred involving large quantities of the embankment material. After a visit to the site and a review of the subsurface information available, it was assessed that the slide occurred as a result of a bearing-capacity failure of the foundation material.

Kentucky Rock Asphalt Bases And Hot-Mix Surfaces; Experimental Construction, Robert L. Florence Apr 1966

Kentucky Rock Asphalt Bases And Hot-Mix Surfaces; Experimental Construction, Robert L. Florence

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objectives of this study are disposed toward the development of Kentucky Rock Asphalt for use as a traffic-bound base and surface on rural roads near its source and toward re-development of the material for use as hot-mixed, hot-laid, skid-resistant surface course for higher echelon roads. The material is a natural asphaltic-sandstone which occurs in considerable abundance in Edmonson County and in other outcrops of Pottsville sandstones bordering the eastern rim of the Western Kentucky Coal Fields. From 1900 until the 1950's, rock-asphalt was used extensively in Kentucky and elsewhere for road surfacing and was regarded widely as a premium-grade …

The Effect Of Potential Representation On The Electron Scattering At Low Energies., Ahmed K. Aboul-Seoud Mar 1966

The Effect Of Potential Representation On The Electron Scattering At Low Energies., Ahmed K. Aboul-Seoud

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

One of the most useful approaches for gaining understanding of atomic structure is that of experiments involving electron scattering from atoms. In particular, knowledgle of differential and total elastic scattering cross sections enables one to calculate momentum transfer cross sections, mean free path, and the width of multiple scattering distributions. From the point of view of a theorist, the central question is that of the interaction potential. A representation of this latter quantity will give rise, mathematically, to a two point boundary value problem involving the Schrödinger equation. Upon solving the Schrodinger equation, and satisfying the appropriate boundary conditions, the …

Conversion Of Parahydrogen To Orthohydrogen, George A. Winkler Mar 1966

Conversion Of Parahydrogen To Orthohydrogen, George A. Winkler

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

Heisenberg (53) and Hund (57) postulated the existence of two modifications of hydrogen. This occurred as a result of Heisenberg's previous explanation of the existence for orthohelium and parahelium using quantum theory. From analogous considerations, he and Hund asserted that hydrogen was a mixture of two gases. Dennison (28) applied their theories to explain the falling off of the rotational specific heat of hydrogen. This had been observed by Eucken (34) in 1912. In 1928, Giaque and Johnston (45) held gaseous hydrogen at 85°K for six months. On liquefaction they found a detectable difference in vapor pressure. They stated that …

Electronic Computer Program For The Solution Of Slope Stability By The Wedge Method Of Analysis., James O. Boardman

Civil Engineering ETDs

Earth embankments and the foundation upon which they rest are subject to abear stresses induced by their own weight. It the embankment serves as a water retention structure, additional shear stresses are developed by seepage forces originating from pore pressure, from the reservoir pool and from rainfall. In certain regions, earthquake forces must also be added to these gravity and water forces.

Prior to the turn or the century and tor thirty some years after, earth dam side slopes were selected on the basis of past experience in lieu of a theoretical analysis. Justin, a noted authority on earth dam …

Stage-Fall-Discharge Relations For Flood Flows Over Highway Embankments, Gaylord V. Skogerboe, M. Leon Hyatt, Lloyd H. Austin Mar 1966

Stage-Fall-Discharge Relations For Flood Flows Over Highway Embankments, Gaylord V. Skogerboe, M. Leon Hyatt, Lloyd H. Austin

Reports

At Utah State University, considerable effort has been devoted to the analysis of submerged flow at open channel constrictions. A method of analyzing submerged flow was first developed for a trapezoidal flume by Hyatt (1965). Later studies verified the method of analysis for a rectangular flume (Skogerboe, Walker, and Robinson, 1965) and Parshall flumes (Skogerboe, Hyatt, England, and Johnson, 1965). Because of the previous findings, it was felt this method of analyzing submerged flow could be applied to highway embankments.

A highway embankment is a form of broad-crested weir when overtopped by flood waters. Being a weir, the flood discharge …

Much of this general and preliminary information is available to the public in the form of county soil survey reports that have been published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and geologic quadrangle maps that have …

Vapor Liquid Equilibria Of The Isopropanol-Isopropylacetate-Water System, Amin Zavosh Feb 1966

Vapor Liquid Equilibria Of The Isopropanol-Isopropylacetate-Water System, Amin Zavosh

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

The separation of isopropylacetate from a ternary mixture of isopropanol, isopropylacetate and water by azeotropic distillation requires reliable and thermodynamically consistent vapor-liquid equilibrium data. By using a single experimental vapor-liquid equilibrium datum point for each of the related binaries of the above system, it is possible to determine the binary constants of some of the integrated forms of the Gibbs-Duhem equation such as the Van Laar or Margules equation. The binary constants can be used in the ternary forms of the above equations and in conjunction with the definition of activity coefficient to generate approximate vapor-liquid equilibrium data over the …

Impact Of I 75 On The Local Economy Between Walton And Georgetown, Robert C. Deen Feb 1966

Impact Of I 75 On The Local Economy Between Walton And Georgetown, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In 1956 the National Interstate and Defense Highway System was approved by Congress. It was immediately apparent that the diversion of traffic to such a system could result in immediate and lasting significant changes in the traffic flow patterns on the older highways, and this probably would have an immediate effect upon the businesses located along these older highways. In the bill authorizing the Interstate Highway System provision was made for studies of the economic effects of the new system upon local economies. The study reported herein is a part of a long-range investigation of the various aspects of economic …

Nucleate-Boiling Heat Transfer To Water At Atmospheric Pressure, H. D. Chevali Jan 1966

Nucleate-Boiling Heat Transfer To Water At Atmospheric Pressure, H. D. Chevali

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to study the hysteresis effect, the effect of micro-roughness and orientation of the heat-transfer surface, and the effect of infra-red-radiation-treated heat-transfer surfaces on the nucleate-boiling curve.

It has been observed that there exists no hysteresis effect for water boiling from a cylindrical copper surface in the nucleate-boiling region over the range studied. The nucleate-boiling curve has been found to be independent of micro-roughness and orientation of the heat-transfer surface. There was no detectable change in the nucleate-boiling characteristics of the heat-transfer surface when the surface was treated with infra-red radiation"--Abstract, page ii.

Electrodialysis Of Tomato Juice, Raghunath R. Khetan Jan 1966

Electrodialysis Of Tomato Juice, Raghunath R. Khetan

Masters Theses

"Thermal decarboxylation of carboxylic acids has been helpful in illustrating some fundamentals of reaction kinetics in solution. It has been important in formulation of the theory of unimolecular reactions. It is also used frequently in the synthetical methods of organic chemistry.

In a recent study of the anodic oxidation of malonic acid in sulfuric acid at 80⁰C using a platinum anode, the interpretation of some results was impossible due to the spontaneous decomposition of the malonic acid. As no information is available in the literature about decomposition rates of malonic acid in sulfuric acid at the concentrations used, it was …

Piggery Septic System, N E. Macintyre Jan 1966

Piggery Septic System, N E. Macintyre

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ONE of the problems of intensive houses for pigs is the disposal of the dung and urine.

If proper arrangements are not made to remove this, it soon accumulates in an offensive pile at one end of the piggery, making an excellent breeding ground for flies.

Manure Disposal From Piggeries, P Mcnamara Jan 1966

Manure Disposal From Piggeries, P Mcnamara

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Many new piggeries have been built during the past year as more farmers swing over to intensive housing.

In most cases the problem of effluent disposal has been overlooked. This article shows how some pig raisers are beating the problem.

Mastitis : Modified Teat Cups Give Better Back-Flushing, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Back-flushing of the teat cups has not brought the expected reduction in the spread of mastitis in some dairy herds.

Replacement of the conventional nut-and-tail nipple with a special flushing nipple, or use of a one-piece teat cup liner, will ensure that flushing is efficient.

Individual Sow Feeders, P Mcnamara Jan 1966

Individual Sow Feeders, P Mcnamara

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FOOD is the major cost in any pig enterprise and it is particularly easy for waste to occur in the breeding herd.

Individual feeders enable the pigman to feed each sow according to her need, and enable the sows to eat their feed slowly or quickly as they choose.

Termites Or White Ants, Clee Francis Howard Jenkins Jan 1966

Termites Or White Ants, Clee Francis Howard Jenkins

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

TERMITES are commonly but erroneously called "white ants."

Actually they are more nearly related to cockroaches than to ants, but their general appearance and subterranean habits have given strong support to the popular designation.

They may be divided into two major groups from an economic point of view, viz., wood-dwelling and earth-dwelling termites.

Synthesis And Structural Determination Of Intermetallic Compounds In The Fe-Ho System, Gerald J. Roe Jan 1966

Synthesis And Structural Determination Of Intermetallic Compounds In The Fe-Ho System, Gerald J. Roe

Continuously Tapered Dielectric Matching Transitions For Waveguides, William E. Hord Jan 1966

Continuously Tapered Dielectric Matching Transitions For Waveguides, William E. Hord

Doctoral Dissertations

"Dielectric matching transitions at microwave frequencies are used for matching air filled waveguides into dielectric filled waveguides for maser work or into dielectric rod antennas. Also dielectric loading has been shown to improve the performance of the ferrite isolators.

The dielectric matching transitions that have been analyzed in the literature are of the stepped type. The continuously tapered dielectric matching transitions investigated in this dissertation provide increased bandwidth with very little increase of physical complexity.

The dissertation provides an analytical method for analysis and design for the continuously tapered dielectric matching transition. First-order and second-order approximate solutions for both symmetrical …

The Anodic Behavior Of Zinc In Aqueous Salt Solutions, Yun-Chung Sun Jan 1966

The Anodic Behavior Of Zinc In Aqueous Salt Solutions, Yun-Chung Sun

Doctoral Dissertations

"The increasing demand for protective metals as coatings and non-corrosive alloys has caused extensive research on the fundamental behavior of metals in corrosive media. The problem of controlling the destructive process of metallic corrosion still exists and becomes urgent in this space age. The desirablity of metals such as beryllium, magnesium, and zinc in air frame and space structural units, because of their high strength to weight ratio, has been responsible for the considerable progress in their technology in recent years.

The basic mechanism of the anodic dissolution of metals such as zinc, cadmium, and magnesium in salt solution is …

An Investigation Of The Induction Heating Characteristics Of Powdered Susceptors Dispersed In A Non-Conducting Medium, Robert Leon Wright Jan 1966

An Investigation Of The Induction Heating Characteristics Of Powdered Susceptors Dispersed In A Non-Conducting Medium, Robert Leon Wright

Doctoral Dissertations

"This investigation determined some of the induction heating characteristics of powdered magnetite, iron and ferrosilicon susceptor dispersed in silica sand which had been coated with thermosetting resin. The powdered susceptor particles in the mixture were heated by the field of an induction coil, consequently heating the resin coated sand and bonding the sand grains together.

It was found that the type, relative amount, and particle size of the susceptor were important variables to be considered in the induction heating characteristics. Hysteresis losses in the susceptor particles, which are a function of the coil current, frequency, and permeability, appear to be the …

The Statistical Mechanics Of Kink Interactions, Michael Brewer Mcneil Jan 1966

The Statistical Mechanics Of Kink Interactions, Michael Brewer Mcneil

Doctoral Dissertations

"Using a potential derived from continuum elasticity, the interactions between kinks on a dislocation line are studied as special cases of the problem of a one-dimensional system of interacting particles. By the use of constant pressure ensembles, the principal kink-interaction problems of physical interest are solved. The application of these solutions to the theoretical analyses of work hardening and internal friction is explored and comparisons made to previous work in which kink interactions were neglected; it is found that, as would be expected, variations of equilibrium kink populations with external stress cannot account for the Bordoni peak, which must therefore …

Composite Pavement Design, James H. Havens Jan 1966

Composite Pavement Design, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

There is an aura of superiority attached to the work "composite"--that is to say, the composite of anything is expected to be superior to its distinct elements of parts. It will suffice here to define a composite pavement as being compounded of "rigid" and "flexible" parts or layers. In reality, we mean layers of portland cement concrete and bituminous concrete--each of which is admirably sufficient in itself or may be so down-graded to satisfy lesser desires. Even so, we seem always to be discontent with the status quo. We are all somewhat opinionated on matters of pavement design and …

Nucleate Boiling Heat Transfer To Liquid Nitrogen At Atmospheric Pressure, Satish R. Parikh Jan 1966

Nucleate Boiling Heat Transfer To Liquid Nitrogen At Atmospheric Pressure, Satish R. Parikh

Masters Theses

"The object of this investigation was to study the effect of micro-roughness, a thin layer of oil, and infra-red radiations on the cylindrical heat transfer surface of copper, in liquid nitrogen and at atmospheric pressure during nucleate boiling. An attempt was made to find any possible effect of orientation of the heat transfer element on nucleate boiling. A number of different runs were taken with different degrees of roughness, and different orientation positions. Nucleate boiling has been found to be nearly independent of the heat transfer surface roughness and of orientation while strongly dependent on the chemical nature of the …
