Elastic-Plastic Analysis Of A Flat Ring Subject To Internal Pressure, Wei-Yang Warren Lu Jul 1976

Elastic-Plastic Analysis Of A Flat Ring Subject To Internal Pressure, Wei-Yang Warren Lu

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

An exact elastic-plastic solution for the stresses in a flat ring subject to pressure is obtained on the basis of J2 deformation theory together with a modified Ramberg-Osgood law. The results are assessed on the basis of Budiansky's criterion for the acceptability of J2 deformation theory. By using exact elastic-plastic stresses, the radial enlargement and the permanent increase in thickness of the ring at the hole are obtained. Upon release of the pressure, residual stresses around the hole are produced.

A Study On The Stabilization Of A Floating Platform, Waldo Lizcano Jul 1976

A Study On The Stabilization Of A Floating Platform, Waldo Lizcano

Dissertations and Theses

A new technique for controlling the pitching motion of a floating platform is proposed in this study.

The floating platform is assumed to be a simplified model of the columnar type rectangular platform supported by buoyant force from four cylindrical legs. The control arrangement consists of water jet streams immerging horizontally from two points located some distance apart on each leg to form a restoring couple. The water jet streams can be shifted t0 opposite horizontal positions or to the vertical downward ,positions according to control requirements. They are governed by angle control criterion as well as velocity control criterion. …

Frequency-Mixing Detection (Fmd) Of Polarization-Modulated Light, R. M.A. Azzam Jul 1976

Frequency-Mixing Detection (Fmd) Of Polarization-Modulated Light, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

When a light beam whose polarization and intensity are weakly modulated at a frequency ωm passes through a periodic analyzer of frequency ωa(<ωm) and the transmitted flux is linearly detected, the resulting total signal St consists of two components: (i) a periodic baseband signal Sbb with harmonics of frequencies nωa (n = 0,1,2,…) and (ii) an amplitude-modulated-carrier signal δSmc with center (carrier) frequency ωm and sideband frequencies at ωm ± nωa(n = 1,2,…). In this paper we show that the average polarization of the beam is determined …

The Effects Of Optical Path Perturbations During Recording On A Reconstructed Holographic Image, Stevan Israel Feldman Jun 1976

The Effects Of Optical Path Perturbations During Recording On A Reconstructed Holographic Image, Stevan Israel Feldman

Dissertations

The effects of optical path perturbations occurring during recording on the reconstructed image of a hologram are investigated. It is shown that such variations of optical path are equivalent to conditions of holographic interferometry which can be classified in three categories: 1) object motion alone, 2) film motion alone, and 3) simultaneous film and object motion; all motions are defined with respect to the stationary reference source during the recording of the hologram.

The theory concerning the effects of object motion alone on the radiance distribution of a reconstructed holographic image has already been developed by previous researchers and is …

Interpretation Of Tests On Welded Light Gage Steel Connections, Mark Shephard, George Winter, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION This report interprets the results of three sets of test data (Ref. 1 through 3) on welded light-gage cold-formed steel specimens. The tests were conducted at Cornell for the American Iron and Steel Institute on 252 symmetric puddle and fillet welded connections tested under monotonically increasing static load. The tested connections consisted of 130 shop welded specimens and 122 field welded specimens. All test connections had the same basic configuration being made up of center plates, referred to as parent plates or connected plates in the references, butted together with one or, in the case of the double sheet …

Bolted Connections In Cold-Formed Steel Structures, Randall L. Mosby, Wei-Wen Yu

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION A. Purpose of Investigation. The design of bolted connections in cold-formed steel structures is based on the present AISI Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members. 1 Prior to the development of the design criteria, bolted connections were tested at University of Michigan 2 in the 1940's and then at Cornell University 3,4 in the 1950's. The present design provisions were developed primarily on the basis of the tests conducted by George Winter and his associates at Cornell University. Additional tests were recently made by Popowich 5 on multi-bolt connections and by Dhalla 6 on connections with …

Freeze-And-Thaw Of Concretes And Aggregates, James H. Havens, Robert C. Deen Jun 1976

Freeze-And-Thaw Of Concretes And Aggregates, James H. Havens, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report summarizes several years of research relating to damage to concrete and aggregates undergoing freezing and thawing. Basic principles involving freezing and attendant pressures are considered. Application of these principles to the evaluation of concrete was accomplished in experiments on concrete having low and high air contents. The effects of air entrainment upon freeze-thaw resistance were demonstrated.

Freeze-thaw characteristics of saturated aggregates relative to physical properties such as porosity, absorption, and bulk specific gravity were studied by submerging individual particles in pre-chilled mercury. Pressures associated with popouts in concrete were monitored and are presented along with accompanying theoretical considerations.

Effect Of Pavement Texture On Traffic Noise, Kenneth R. Agent, Charles V. Zegeer Jun 1976

Effect Of Pavement Texture On Traffic Noise, Kenneth R. Agent, Charles V. Zegeer

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Noise from highway vehicles emanates primarily from engine exhausts, tire-pavement interaction) gears, and rattles. Studies have shown that at high speeds tires become the dominant generators of noise. Measurements on different road surfaces have produced different noise-versus-speed relationships (1). This led to the road surface adjustment used in the noise prediction procedure developed in NCHRP Report 117 (2). This adjustment called for a 5 dBA reduction for smooth surfaces (very smooth, seal-coated asphalt pavement) and a 5 dBA increase for rough surfaces (rough asphalt pavement with voids 1/2 inch (12 mm) or larger in diameter and grooved concrete). …

Pedestrian Accidents In Kentucky, Charles V. Zegeer, Robert C. Deen Jun 1976

Pedestrian Accidents In Kentucky, Charles V. Zegeer, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

When a pedestrian is hit by a motor vehicle, he is usually injured or killed; there is no protective cushion to absorb the impact. The high concentration of pedestrians in urban areas, coupled with heavy vehicle traffic, often results in large numbers of pedestrian accidents. In rural areas, there are considerably fewer pedestrians but traffic speeds are higher and, therefore, accidents are more often fatal.

Pedestrian fatalities have increased in the United States from about 7,800 in 1960 to approximately 10,500 in 1973 (1). There are 120,000 pedestrian accidents each year. Total traffic accidents in the US number about …

Speed Reduction In School Zones, Charles V. Zegeer, James H. Havens, Robert C. Deen Jun 1976

Speed Reduction In School Zones, Charles V. Zegeer, James H. Havens, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The use of flashing beacons together with signing has become somewhat standard throughout the country to alert drivers to the presence of school children and to regulate vehicle speed in school zones. Yellow beacons, usually two flashing alternately, may be used with both warning signs and regulatory signs. The only regulatory signs related to school zones are speed-limit signs. Both hazard identification beacons and speed-limit sign beacons are intended to operate only during hours when the warning and speed regulations are in effect. The effectiveness of signs and flashing lights in reducing speeds in school zones has been questioned.

An Energy Accounting Evaluation Of Several Alternatives For Hydropower And Geothermal Development, J. Clair Batty, J. Paul Riley, William J. Grenney, David A. Bell Jun 1976

An Energy Accounting Evaluation Of Several Alternatives For Hydropower And Geothermal Development, J. Clair Batty, J. Paul Riley, William J. Grenney, David A. Bell

Reports

Alternative management strategies for hydropower and geothermal development are myriad. This study does not attempt to evaluate or even summarize the many schemes which are possible. In an era of plentiful natural resources, economic analysis procedures for selecting a particular alternative have been developed which traditionally have tended to optimize on the basis of capital and labor. The approach taken in this study is based on the notion of optimum deployment of finite resources. A legitimate question which this study has attempted to address is: Does the construction of large water management facilities, such as hydropower dams, which involve huge …

The Effects On Agriculture In Utah Of Water Transfers To Oil Shale Development, B. Delworth Gardner, Kenneth S. Lyon, Roger O. Tew

Reports

In Part I the institutional factors affecting water distribution in the Upper Colorado River Basin in general and specifically the Uintah Basin are presented. The historical development of the appropriation doctrine of water allocation is outlined and Utah water policy is examined. These institutional factors are analyzed in light of the prototype oil shale development in the Uintah Basin and potential impact on the area's agricultural sector. Oil shale water estimates are compared with Uintah Basin water availability and examined with regard to population projections and municipal water use. Lastly, Utah water policy and the appropriation doctrine are viewed as …

Modulated Generalized Ellipsometry, R. M.A. Azzam Jun 1976

Modulated Generalized Ellipsometry, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

We extend ellipsometry to the direct measurement of small perturbations of the Jones matrix of any linear nondepolarizing optical sample (system) subjected to a modulating stimulus such as temperature, stress, or electric or magnetic field. The methodology of this technique, to be called Modulated Generalized Ellipsometry (MGE), is presented. First an ellipsometer with arbitrary polarizing and analyzing optics is assumed, and subsequently the discussion is specialized to a conventional ellipsometer having either the polarizer-sample-analyzer (PSA) or the polarizer-compensator-sample-analyzer (PCSA) arrangement. MGE provides the tool for the systematic study of thermo-optical, piezo-optical, electro-optical, magneto-optical, and other allied effects for both isotropic …

Distributed Parameter Sensitivity Theory To Solve Certain Reliability Problems, Moses Nee Buernor Ayiku May 1976

Distributed Parameter Sensitivity Theory To Solve Certain Reliability Problems, Moses Nee Buernor Ayiku

Dissertations

It is well known that in actual control systems there are uncontrolled parameter changes caused by aging of elements, temperature, pressure and effects of externalmedium, among others, which may impair the performance ofthe system. Hence, there is the need to develop systems that weakly react to these parameter fluctuations. Sensitivity theory has been developed to study some of these problems. Most of the investigations in this area, however, deal with problems in continuous systems modeled by ordinary differential equations. Even the recent publications on sensitivity problems in distributed parameter control systems are largely concerned with systems modeled by first order …

Investigation And Optimum Design Of The Generalized Second-Order Phase-Locked Loop, William Allen Novick May 1976

Investigation And Optimum Design Of The Generalized Second-Order Phase-Locked Loop, William Allen Novick

Dissertations

In this dissertation, a second-order phase-locked loop (PLL) in which the loop filter contains complex zeros is investigated in both its linear and nonlinear modes of operation; prior designs used a filter containing a simple zero on the negative real axis. This "generalized" second-order PLL had been heretofore essentially unexplored.

The basic characteristics of the generalized second-order PLL operating in the linear mode including the open and closed-loop responses and the corresponding root locus were generated and compared against those of the conventional second-order PLL. As in the conventional case, the generalized second-order PLL is found to be unconditionally stable. …

Separations Of Multicomponent Mixtures Via Thermal Parametric Pumping, John Daniel Stokes May 1976

Separations Of Multicomponent Mixtures Via Thermal Parametric Pumping, John Daniel Stokes

Dissertations

This dissertation covers the separation of solutes from multicomponent solutions via direct mode thermal parametric pumping.

Dilute solution separations were predicted from existing binary equations by assuming the existence of pseudo binary systems, each system consisting of one solute and the common solvent. Two systems, toluene-aniline-n-heptane and toluene-acetophenone-n-heptane with a silica gel adsorbent were used to experimentally demonstrate the separation. Experimental results were in good agreement with the mathematical predictions.

For concentrated multicomponent solutions, the separation was demonstrated by the system, toluene-acetophenone-n-heptane on silica gel. The effects of mass transfer and nonlinear adsorption isotherms became significant and a numerical solution …

Prediction And Correlation Of The Salt-Effect In Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium, Enrique M. Bekerman May 1976

Prediction And Correlation Of The Salt-Effect In Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium, Enrique M. Bekerman

Theses

The feasibility of developing a method of correlation and prediction, for mixtures of two solvents containing a dissolved salt has been studied. The procedure consisted of arriving at the interaction parameters for the three binary systems (solvent 1-solvent 2, solvent 1-salt, solvent 2-salt) and using these to calculate the ternary results. Attempts to generate interaction parameters for the solvent-salt binaries by means of the Wilson equation were unsuccessful, whereas, use of the NRTL equation resulted in a very good fit of the binary data.

In correlating the ternary results, it became necessary to redefine the liquid phase mole fractions and …

The Recovery Of Methanol From The Mother Liquor Of A Pharmaceutical Active Ingredient, Richard Lawrence Eichholtz May 1976

The Recovery Of Methanol From The Mother Liquor Of A Pharmaceutical Active Ingredient, Richard Lawrence Eichholtz

Theses

The company has been sending to the sewer the filtrate from one of our chemical processes. This filtrate contains 63 vol. % methanol. The recovery of this methanol would reduce the amount of purchased methanol. The recovery would also reduce the Biological Oxygen Demand of the plant effluent. In the near future the local sewer authority will be billing the company for BOD.

The goal of the recovery process is to obtain methanol of satisfactory quality for reuse in the process from which it came. A literature search and a laboratory study verified the non-ideality of the system. Preliminary calculations …

Reaction Kinetics For The Synthesis Of Benzyl Benzoate From Benzyl Chloride And The Triethylamine Salt Of Benzoic Acid, Michael A. Kolakowski May 1976

Reaction Kinetics For The Synthesis Of Benzyl Benzoate From Benzyl Chloride And The Triethylamine Salt Of Benzoic Acid, Michael A. Kolakowski

Theses

The reaction kinetics for the synthesis of benzyl benzoate from benzyl chloride and the triethylamine salt of benzoic acid has been studied over the temperature range of 70-105°C and a mole ratio of benzyl chloride to triethylamine of 0.5 - 10.0.

A reaction mechanism which is consistent with the experimental data has been derived. The experimental data was analyzed by means of the integral method of analysis. The temperature dependency of the reaction was determined from Arrhenius' Law and the activation energy was calculated to be 15,064 cal/g-mole. An empirical equation which explains the effects of the reactant mole ratio …

Subcontracting By The Petrochemical Engineer-Constructor, Michael Peter Skurla May 1976

Subcontracting By The Petrochemical Engineer-Constructor, Michael Peter Skurla

Theses

An analysis has been made of the methods used by a Petrochemical Engineer-Constructor, who has national labor agreements, in deciding if the construction phase of a project should be done by a subcontract method of construction or be accomplished on a direct hire basis. The petrochemical complex under discussion is considered to be in the $75 million range for the total installed cost including design, engineering, procurement, and construction.

The influence of subcontracting portions of the construction phase by the Engineer-Constructor is reviewed with its impact on: the client; project schedule and cost; local and national labor relations, because of …

The Effects Of Angularity On The Compaction And Shear Strength Of A Cohesionless Material, Richard Edward Swiderski May 1976

The Effects Of Angularity On The Compaction And Shear Strength Of A Cohesionless Material, Richard Edward Swiderski

Theses

Several physical methods are described for the practical measurement and rating of angularity (shape) of cohesionless soil particles. Angularity is determined by utilizing the fundamental property of a sphere: a sphere has the smallest contact surface area of any shape for a given volume. Therefore, any other shape will exhibit a greater contact surface area and consequently will have a greater frictional resistance which is a function of its degree of angularity.

The effects of angularity on the physical behavior (e.g. strength) of cohesionless soils was investigated at various relative compaction densities. For this purpose a combined compaction and direct …
