Bayesian Inquiry: An Approach To The Use Of Experts, King G. Yee May 1976

Bayesian Inquiry: An Approach To The Use Of Experts, King G. Yee

Dissertations and Theses

Subjective information is a valuable resource; however, decisionmakers often ignore it because of difficulties in eliciting it from assessors. This thesis is on Bayesian inquiry and it presents an approach to eliciting subjective information from assessors. Based on the concepts of cascaded inference and Bayesian statistics, the approach is designed to reveal to the decision-maker the way in which the assessor considers his options and the reasons he has for selecting particular alternatives. Unlike previous works on cascaded inferences, the approach here focuses on incoherency. Specifically, it employs the use of additional information to revise and check the estimates. The …

The Design Of An Automatic Electronic Preanodizer, Armen C. Grossenbacher May 1976

The Design Of An Automatic Electronic Preanodizer, Armen C. Grossenbacher

Dissertations and Theses

The topic of this thesis is the design of an automatic preanodizer to be used to preadjust precision tantalum resistors by anodizing their surfaces. The purpose of the preanodizer is to generate a controllable voltage ramp to be applied to a set of tantalum resistors which are immersed in a suitable electrolyte. The slope and maximum value of the voltage ramp are set to produce the current required for proper anodization of the resistors. The rate of anodization determines the rate of change of the resistor value. This thesis covers the design of an electronic device to meet a set …

One of the more promising applications of the heat pipe is in heat exchangers. Heat pipe heat exchangers may be used as recuperators in heating and ventilating systems, in gas turbines, in steam power plants, and in various process industry applications.

An analysis of the heat pipe heat exchanger was conducted in order to help optimize its performance. A computer program was developed to predict heat pipe performance, finned-tube heat exchanger performance, and the overall performance of a finned-tube heat pipe heat exchanger. The computer analysis uses conventional heat exchanger design techniques and a new heat pipe design technique which …

Comment On “Two-Magnon Resonant Raman Scattering In Mnf2”, D. L. Rousseau, R. E. Dietz, P. F. Williams, H. J. Guggenheim May 1976

Comment On “Two-Magnon Resonant Raman Scattering In Mnf2”, D. L. Rousseau, R. E. Dietz, P. F. Williams, H. J. Guggenheim

P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications

We have not been able lo reproduce the recently reported resonance enhancement of Raman scattering from magnons in MnF2 by Amer, Chiang, and Shen. Fifteen crystals ranging from extremely pure samples to ones with high concentrations of impurities, in addition to one supplied by Amer, Chiang, and Shen, were investigated. By observing the off-resonance scattering, we conclude that if an enhancement of greater than a factor of 2 were present, it would have been seen in our resonance spectra.

Mechanical Connections In Cold-Formed Steel: Comprehensive Test Procedures And Evaluation Methods, John Fraczek, George Winter, Teoman Peköz May 1976

Mechanical Connections In Cold-Formed Steel: Comprehensive Test Procedures And Evaluation Methods, John Fraczek, George Winter, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

Design equations do not exist for connections in cold-formed steel formed with most types of mechanical fasteners, and such designs are presently based on test results. A lack of standard test procedures and corresponding evaluation methods impedes the acceptance of connection designs and the exchange of information vital to understanding the connection performance of a large number of mechanical fasteners with diverse properties. Initial steps toward standardization are taken with the development of fixtures and procedures for single shear, pullout and pull-over tests. The proposed single shear tests employ both a simple specimen formed with two overlapping straps and a …

Constant-Rate-Of-Strain And Controlled-Gradient Consolidation Testing, C. Thomas Gorman May 1976

Constant-Rate-Of-Strain And Controlled-Gradient Consolidation Testing, C. Thomas Gorman

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Controlled-gradient (CG), constant-rate-of-strain (CRS), and conventional incremental-loading (STD) consolidation testing are compared and evaluated. Undisturbed samples representing three soils common to Kentucky were used in the testing program. Settlements estimated by each testing technique were compared with settlement records from one of the sites. Results of 15 CG, 14 CRS, and 32 STD consolidation tests are shown. No significant differences were noted in values obtained from the three types of consolidation tests. Feasibility of the new test methods for routine testing is briefly discussed and recommendations were made for refinements in testing procedures.

A Survey Of Use Of Left-Turn-On-Red, Kenneth R. Agent May 1976

A Survey Of Use Of Left-Turn-On-Red, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objectives of this survey were to determine the extent that a left turn on a red traffic signal (LTOR) has been used across the country and to learn how effective it has been. Responses were received from 43 of the 55 cities surveyed. Of the cities responding, 22 have either had past experience with LTOR or have recently enacted an ordinance which will allow LTOR in the future. Most LTOR laws limit its use to intersections of two one-way streets. A much higher percentage of cities in the western United States have laws permitting LTOR than cities in the …

The Socioeconomic Impact Of The Mountain Parkway And Ky 15, Joseph T. Farmer May 1976

The Socioeconomic Impact Of The Mountain Parkway And Ky 15, Joseph T. Farmer

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A study of socioeconomic variables in a nine-county region in Eastern Kentucky was undertaken to determine whether significant growth had occurred since the opening of the Mountain Parkway and reconstruction of KY 15. It was hypothesized that these roads have acted as catalysts with available resources to promote a better quality of life.

Study revealed that, while income levels and business sales have enjoyed substantial increases, overall quality of life is still poor. Educational facilities are inadequate; economic diversification in business types is limited; coal is still the main stimulant for income and employment. However, outmigration of persons from the …

Assessment Of Possible Carcinogenic Hazards Created In Surrounding Ecosystems By Oil Shale Developments, Gerald L. Dassler May 1976

Assessment Of Possible Carcinogenic Hazards Created In Surrounding Ecosystems By Oil Shale Developments, Gerald L. Dassler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One of the purposes of an environmental assessment is to foresee potential problems created by the introduction of contaminants into an ecosystem and to suggest appropriate control devices to mitigate the effects of such inputs. In the case of the oil shale industry, very little is known about the potential hazards, especially those related to the emission of organic compounds with carcinogenic potency. The hazards will probably be due to chronic exposures to the emitted compounds and the effects of such exposures are likely to take years to manifest themselves, as is the case with many carcinogenic substances. A precise …

Determination Of Lead Content In Apical Tissue Following Root Canal Obturation With Sargenti's Formula, G. Merle Hickok

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Four Stump-tail monkeys were used to help determine if the lead in Sargenti's formula diffuses out into the apical tissue while confined entirely within the root canal. In each animal two teeth were filled with Sargenti's formula 1-2 millimeters short of the radiographic apex, and two teeth were filled with gutta percha and Proco-Sol sealer for controls, making a total sample size of sixteen. The time ranged from 48 hours to 120 days. Lead analysis using the spectrophotometric method showed a higher lead content in the teeth filled with Sargenti's formula than with the gutta percha controls.

A Rationale For Furrow Irrigation System Design And Management, Safa Noori Hamad May 1976

A Rationale For Furrow Irrigation System Design And Management, Safa Noori Hamad

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Mathematical and computerized models are developed to design and optimize furrow irrigation systems. The optimization process starts with land grading design, if any is needed, followed by a prediction of maximum non-erosive furrow stream size allowed on a given soil and the associated furrow-advance function. An average depth of application per irrigation is then assumed from which the wetting pattern along the furrow and the amounts of runoff water are predicted. A design of an Irrigation Runoff Recovery System, IRRS, is then executed, if desired, and system cost is determined. Using the predicted wetting pattern and the appropriate Crop Production …

Intermetallic Reactions In Vacuum-Deposited Nickel And Gold Films On (111) Silicon Single Crystals, K. H. Yoon, Gordon Lewis, L. L. Levenson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Pure nickel and gold thin films were vacuum-deposited on (111) silicon single crystals. When Ni/Au/Si or Au/Ni/Si samples were heated to about 550° in situ, hexagonal or deformed hexagonal shaped crystallites were formed on the silicon substrates. The composition of these crystallites was determined by using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and scanning Auger microprobe methods. The crystallites were identified as NiSi2. The crystal-lites on the (111) silicon plane parallel to the surface appeared as regular hexagons while the inclined crystal-lites resembled trapezia. The results of Auger spectra and in-depth composition profiles for Ni, Au, and Si showed that the …

Accidents On Rural, Two-Lane Roads And Their Relation To Pavement Friction [Apr. 1976], Rolands L. Rizenbergs, James L. Burchett, Larry A. Warren

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Friction measurements were made with a skid trailer at 40 mph (18 m/s) on 1460 miles (2350 km) of rural, two-lane roads (US routes) in Kentucky. Maintenance sections or subsections were treated as test sections. Accident experience, friction measurements, traffic volumes, and other available data were obtained for each. Various expressions of wet-pavement accidents and pavement friction were related and analyzed. Averaging methods were used in developing trends and minimizing scatter. A moving average for progressively-ordered sets of ten test sections and test sections grouped by Skid Numbers and Peak Slip Numbers yielded more definite results. The expression of accident …

Analyses of 1968 and 1975 traffic characteristics data were compared with 1973 data for the purpose of investigating unusual trends over the various time periods. The 1968 and 1973 surveys produced similar results; however, some changes …

An Efficient Dft Algorithm Using The Walsh Transform, Albert P. Gerheim Apr 1976

An Efficient Dft Algorithm Using The Walsh Transform, Albert P. Gerheim

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The matrix transformation relating the sequency and frequency domains is derived. It is shown that these frequency-to-frequency conversion can be performed via a computationally efficient sparse matrix algorithm. The sequency-to-frequency algorithm can be used with a fast Hadamard transform to implement a discrete Fourier trans form. The efficiencies of this combined algorithm and a radix-two fast Fourier transform are compared.

The algorithm is applied to the sequency domain de sign of a Wiener digital filter. Improved computational efficiencies are achieved relative to the procedure developed by Kahveci and Hall (9).

An Improved Fission Product Pressure Model For Use In The Venus-Ii Disassembly Code, Ray Leland Jensen Apr 1976

An Improved Fission Product Pressure Model For Use In The Venus-Ii Disassembly Code, Ray Leland Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

The world's growing need for safe, reliable, and long-term energy sources has intensified the research being conducted in the development of nuclear power. The operation of power reactors is contingent upon the continued availability of the fissile material required to maintain a critic a l reactor. The only naturally occuring fissile material is an isotope of uranium, U-235, which only accounts for 0.76 percent of the uranium that is mined. Due to the relative scarcity of this important fissile material it is estimated the United States' sources of economically recoverable fissile material will be delinquished with in about twenty-five years.^1
