Optical Fiber Dispersion Characterization, Alan Edward Geeslin Oct 1979

Optical Fiber Dispersion Characterization, Alan Edward Geeslin

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This thesis discusses the dispersion of optical pulses in fiber waveguides. Procedures for determining the transfer function of an optical fiber using either time domain measurements or frequency domain measurements are given. A test set is described which uses time domain measurements for dispersion characterization. Complex transfer function data are presented for various fiber lengths as well as optical connectors. Prediction of bandwidths of long fibers from bandwidth/measurements taken on shorter length fibers is discussed. A relation between the bandwidth of cascaded connectors in terms of the bandwidth of a single connector is obtained.

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents the background and procedures leading to development of a simulation model to analyze the impact of certain decision variables on operational system performance and workloads as the repair facility of a typical Navy field site. The research examines the impact of maintenance support concepts, as implemented by changes in the decision variables, associated with the broader application of Automatic Test Equipment. The initial effort consisted of data collection and field site surveys which culminated in defining a work flow model illustrating typical repair facility operations. The work flow model is translated into a computer simulation model. The …

The Development Of New Filter Functions Based Upon Solutions To Special Cases Of The Sturm-Liouville Equation, Stephen Joseph Chapman Oct 1979

The Development Of New Filter Functions Based Upon Solutions To Special Cases Of The Sturm-Liouville Equation, Stephen Joseph Chapman

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Two common classes of filter functions in use today, Butterworth functions and Chebyshev functions, are based upon solutions to special cases of the Sturm-Liouville equation. Here, solutions to several other special cases of the Sturm-Liouville equation were used to develop filter functions, and the properties of the resulting filters were examined. The following functions were explored: Chebyshev functions of the second kind, untraspherical functions of the second and third kinds, Hermite functions, and Legendre functions. Filter functions were developed for each of the first five polynomials in each series of functions, and magnitude and phase responses were tabulated and plotted. …

Lake Eola is a land-locked lake located in downtown Orlando, Florida. Its surface area is approximately 27.0 acres (11.0 Ha) and water depth is 2 to 3 feet (0.6 to 0.9 meters) near the shore and 22 feet (6.7 meters) toward the center. Periodical water samples were collected from the lake and storm drains for various stormwater events and physiochemical parameters were analyzed to calculated loading rates from nutrients and heavy metals released to Lake Eola. Algal bioassay studies were performed to investigate stormwater impacts on productivity. Periodical water samples were collected from the lake mixed and filtered for limiting …

Ethylene Process Optimization. Constraint Relaxation And Bounds Adjustment, Kenneth R. Jinkerson, James L. Gaddy Oct 1979

Ethylene Process Optimization. Constraint Relaxation And Bounds Adjustment, Kenneth R. Jinkerson, James L. Gaddy

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Heavily constrained, mixed integer optimization problems present a difficult test for optimization algorithms. This paper examines optimization of the ethylene process (from ethane) using a flowsheet simulation model and the adaptive random search. Optimization resulted in an improvement in annual earnings of $1.15 MM over the usual ethylene process design. This process has both continuous and discrete variables and has sensitive implicit constraints in the pyrolysis furnace. The search efficiency was found to be improved by relaxing these constraints early in the search and then restoring the constraints as the optimum is approached. The search efficiency was also improved by …

Truck Design And Usage And Highway Pavement Performance, Robert C. Deen, Herbert F. Southgate Oct 1979

Truck Design And Usage And Highway Pavement Performance, Robert C. Deen, Herbert F. Southgate

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

When the term highway pavement is used, most people think of the moderate to thick systems on which their vehicles travel on intermediate- or high-type roadways. These pavement systems are typically constructed of bituminous concrete or portland cement concrete. This is not to say that low-volume roads do not have a pavement system; however, in case of low-volume roads, the pavement system usually consists of unbound aggregates, sod, soil materials, or at the most very thin or moderate applications of a binding material. It is the high-type pavement systems to which the comments in this paper will be addressed specifically. …

Cracking In Concrete Pavement, Robert C. Deen, James H. Havens, Assaf S. Rahal, Wm. Vernon Azevedo Oct 1979

Cracking In Concrete Pavement, Robert C. Deen, James H. Havens, Assaf S. Rahal, Wm. Vernon Azevedo

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Cracking of portland cement concrete pavements is a common, even expected, occurrence. To minimize potentially detrimental effects, it is necessary to understand mechanisms that might be used to explain such behavior so that measures may be developed and implemented to control the occurrence of such cracking. Several "theories" are discussed that might provide the mechanisms of pavement cracking. An alternate meachanism, based on fatigue loading of the concrete by temperature expansions-contrations, for the development of so-called D-cracking is offered.

Reliability Analysis Of Emergency Telephone System Models, Thomas J. Hobbs Oct 1979

Reliability Analysis Of Emergency Telephone System Models, Thomas J. Hobbs

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Several alternate systems for use in implementing the 911 emergency system in Orange County, Florida were investigated. The proposed systems were compared with the already existing systems on the basis of reliability, response time, and cost. System reliability was the prime consideration of the study. Flow charts of each system were formulated in order to determine the functions required of equipment and humans. The reliability was then determined by examining the difficulty of the tasks that each was required to perform. Reliability models of the present and proposed systems were constructed. By examining these models and comparing the reliabilities, response …

A Microcomputer Implementation Of Real Time, Continuously Programmable Digital Filters, William Edward Storma Oct 1979

A Microcomputer Implementation Of Real Time, Continuously Programmable Digital Filters, William Edward Storma

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

When a filter transfer function in s is replaced with the bilinear transform in z, the resulting discrete model represents the original continuous model within a second order accuracy of integration. A unique set of recently discovered minimum memory algorithms that perform the bilinear transform on a continuous transfer function are implemented on an INTEL 8080 microprocessor system. Scaling techniques are used to frequency scale all transfer functions to a standardized frequency. All data words are represented in a signed binary double precision format to maintain higher calculation speed and accuracy. Three test case transfer functions of different order are …
