Effects Of Multiple Scattering And Surface Albedo On The Photochemistry Of The Troposphere, Tommy Reinhold Robert Augustsson Apr 1981

Effects Of Multiple Scattering And Surface Albedo On The Photochemistry Of The Troposphere, Tommy Reinhold Robert Augustsson

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A one-dimensional photochemical model of the troposphere containing the species of the nitrogen, oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, and sulfur families has been developed and used to investigate the vertical profiles and the natural (including atmospheric chemical reactions) and anthropogenic sources and sinks of these species. The species continuity equations are solved numerically applying prescribed boundary conditions. The vertical flux is simulated by use of the parameterized eddy diffusion coefficients. Heterogeneous losses (e.g. rainout, gas-to-particle chemistry, and dry deposition), are parameterized to make calculated profiles consistent with measurements. The photochemical model is coupled to a radiative transfer model that calculates the radiation …

Low Speed Handling Characteristics Of A Supersonic Transport By Eigenstructure Assignment, Michael Peter Lazar Apr 1981

Low Speed Handling Characteristics Of A Supersonic Transport By Eigenstructure Assignment, Michael Peter Lazar

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A synthesis procedure, based upon optimal regulator theory and eigenvalue/eigenvector assignment technique, was used in the design of a low-speed lateral control system for the SCAT-15F supersonic transport. Emphasis was placed on reducing the lateral acceleration at the pilot's station. Control laws were designed to make the aircraft handling characteristics acceptable with the exception of the lateral acceleration. It was found that a compromise between the roll performance requirements and the peak lateral acceleration requirement is needed for a successful SCAT-15F design.

Usage And Limitations Of Characteristic Vector Analysis Of Remote Sensing Multispectral Data For The Identification And Quantification Of Water Quality Parameters, Theodore A. Talay

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Recent applications of the technique of characteristic vector analysis to remote-sensing water color data has met with varying degrees of success. It is apparent from these experiments that a more thorough understanding of the informational capability of characteristic vector analysis is needed.

A Method Of Modeling Multirate Two-Dimensional Recursive Digital Filters Author, Albert P. Gerheim Apr 1981

A Method Of Modeling Multirate Two-Dimensional Recursive Digital Filters Author, Albert P. Gerheim

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation presents a method of modeling two dimensional sampled data systems with two sampling rates in each dimension. This methodology is applied to the problem of synthesizing two dimensional velocity filters using one dimensional prototypes and multirate concepts.

The modeling method includes the replacement of scalar z-transforms of signals by vectors of polynomials, and the replacement of scalar z-transforms of impulse responses by matrices of polynomials.

The synthesis of velocity filters is accomplished through the use of coordinate transformations in the z-transform domain which skew the ω1 -ω2 axes on the unit bidisc. The filters synthesized using …

Goertler Instability In Compressible Boundary Layers Along Curved Surfaces With Suction And Cooling, Alok K. Verma Apr 1981

Goertler Instability In Compressible Boundary Layers Along Curved Surfaces With Suction And Cooling, Alok K. Verma

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The Goertler instability of the laminar compressible boundary layer flows along concave surfaces is investigated. The linearized disturbance equations for the three-dimensional, counter-rotating streamwise vortices in two dimensional boundary layers are presented in an orthogonal curvilinear coordinates. The basic approximation of the disturbance equations, that includes the effect of the growth of the boundary layer, is considered and solved numerically. The effect of compressibility on critical stability limits, growth rates, and amplitude ratios of the vortices is evaluated for a range of Mach numbers for Oto 5. The effect of wall cooling and suction of the boundary layer on the …

Sound Absorption In N2-H2o Gas Mixtures At Room Temperature And Low Frequency/Pressure Ratios, William Axam Griffin Apr 1981

Sound Absorption In N2-H2o Gas Mixtures At Room Temperature And Low Frequency/Pressure Ratios, William Axam Griffin

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This study was motivated by a need to obtain standard values of nitrogen's contribution to sound absorption in the Earth's atmosphere. Specific goals included accurate measurements of sound absorption in nitrogen - water vapor mixtures at room temperature and low frequency/pressure ratios, the determination of the N2 vibrational relaxation peak location, (f/P)max, on the f/P axis as a function of humidity, h, and critical evaluation of all results.

The free decay technique was used in a resonance tube to obtain ten sets of sound absorption data in N2-H2O gas mixtures and requisite companion …

Crop Residue Management For Water Erosion Control, Elbert C. Dickey, P. W. Harlan, Don Vokal Apr 1981

Crop Residue Management For Water Erosion Control, Elbert C. Dickey, P. W. Harlan, Don Vokal

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Crop residues are playing an increasingly important role in today's agricultural management systems. In the past, residues were normally chopped or disked and plowed under in the process of seedbed preparation. Distributed throughout the deep-tillage layer, the residues decomposed rapidly and recycled organic matter back into the soil. Use of the traditional moldboard plow tillage system also provided a loose, residue-free seed bed. Unfortunately, moldboard plow tillage systems have high soil moisture losses which can reduce yields in low rainfall areas or during dry years.

Incorporating previous crop residues also leaves the soil surface exposed to agricultural runoff which causes …

Laser Broadening Ratio From The Multimode Oscillation Threshold, Lee W. Casperson Apr 1981

Laser Broadening Ratio From The Multimode Oscillation Threshold, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Lasers with mixed line broadening typically oscillate in a single longitudinal mode for excitation levels only slightly above threshold. At high pump levels, less desirable multimode oscillation may sometimes occur. A procedure is described for using the multimode threshold as a sensitive measure of the broadening ratio, and GaAs is mentioned as an example.

Particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis is a highly versatile method of element analysis. Thus it is well suited for use as a complement to other methods of analysis in experimental programs requiring both chemical and elemental analyses. This paper reports some results of two projects where PIXE was used in conjunction with titration calorimetry, ion chromatography, atomic absorption spectroscopy, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and some other methods. The first is a study of sulfur chemistry in a copper smelter plume. Arsenic was found to be a conservative tracer of the plume and was used for calculation of …

Development And Characterization Of A 9-Mm Inductively-Coupled Argon Plasma Source For Atomic Emission Spectrometry, A. D. Weiss, Richard N. Savage, G. M. Hieftje

Materials Engineering

A new 9-mm (i.d.) inductively-coupled plasma (ICP) torch is described which supports a stable, analytically useful plasma at less than 500 W of r.f. power and 7 l min-1 total argon gas flow. Detection limits, working curves and other analytical characteristics of the new device are compared with those of both a miniature (13-mm i.d.) and conventional (19-mm i.d.) ICP. Although temperatures of the new plasma are somewhat lower than those in the larger plasmas, the new system offers promise for future, miniaturized ICP instruments.

Tillage Systems For Row Crop Production, Elbert C. Dickey, Allen Rider, Phillip W. Harlan Mar 1981

Tillage Systems For Row Crop Production, Elbert C. Dickey, Allen Rider, Phillip W. Harlan

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Selecting a tillage system that is best suited to a particular farming situation is an important management decision. In the past, a crop producer's primary concerns were field capacity and the costs of owning and operating equipment. However, with rapidly increasing energy costs, alternative tillage systems are being carefully evaluated and selected by more producers.

Previously, the most common tillage system included a moldboard plow to turn residue under either in the fall or spring. Following plowing, spring tillage normally included one or more shallow diskings to kill weeds, incorporate fertilizer and pesticides, and provide loose soil for seed. Other …

Behavior Of C- And Z-Purlins Under Wind Uplift, Parviz Soroushian, Teoman Peköz Feb 1981

Behavior Of C- And Z-Purlins Under Wind Uplift, Parviz Soroushian, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION Cold-formed steel lipped channel (C-) and Z-purlins are used widely in the roofs of metal buildings. They are easy and economical to fabricate and erect. However these sections are weak in the lateral direction and in torsion. In order to use their full bending capacity in the strong direction, they must be braced in the lateral direction and against twisting. Roof panels which are connected to the purlins do provide to some extent such bracing effect by virtue of their shear rigidity and resistance to local bending at the connections. Wind uplift is an important design condition for roof …

A Site Evaluation For A Wind Generator At The University Of Northern Iowa, William A. Rosburg Ii Feb 1981

A Site Evaluation For A Wind Generator At The University Of Northern Iowa, William A. Rosburg Ii

Graduate Research Papers

There is a need to develop alternative sources of energy other than our finite fossil fuel resources (Clews, 1975; Leckie, Masters, Whitehouse and Young, 1975). One possible area of great potential is the clean renewable energy in the wind. The World Meteorological Organization has estimated that there is a potential for producing 20 million megawatts of electricity from wind power (Clews, 1975). Although there are problems with cost, reliability, and its inherently intermittent nature, both government and industry are working to develop a wind technology that will help meet today's electrical energy needs.

An increased awareness by the general public …

Deposition Of Suspensions In A Vertical Converging Tube, Kam-Ho Chan

Theses

The deposition of suspensions in a vertical converging tube with significant gravity effects Was investigated theoretically with control volume - finite difference approach. The fluid was assumed to be incompressible and laminar. The particle density was assumed to be uniform at the inlet of the. tube. The velocity profiles for the fluid considered were (a) Uniform profile, (b) Parabolic profile. The angles of convergence studied were 0°, 5° and 7°. Effects of velocity ratio δ*(=terminal velocity/mean flow velocity) on the rate of deposition were investigated for δ*=0,1,10.

It was found that deposition increases with increasing angle …

The Evolution Of A Tailored Communications Structure : The Topics System, Computerized Conferencing & Communications Center, Peter Johnson-Lenz, Trudy Johnson-Lenz

Computerized Conferencing and Communications Center Reports

A computer-based human communication system should be designed for people's use, in response to their perceived needs and communications styles; no single system can meet the needs of all groups and individuals. It might seem that a general electronic mail or computerized conferencing system with a standard set of features should be able to meet most communications needs, in much the same way that the telephone system meets the needs of a wide range of users. However, there are many communications structures found in everyday life, ranging from one-to-many news broadcasts, to the many-to-many patterns of town meetings, from the …

Steel Deck Institute Diaphragm Design Manual First Edition, Larry D. Luttrell Jan 1981

Steel Deck Institute Diaphragm Design Manual First Edition, Larry D. Luttrell

Steel Deck Institute (SDI) Specifications and Manuals (1939 - present)

The Major Units Laboratory at West Virginia University has been involved in full-scale diaphragm studies for the past fifteen years. The work has covered tests on a wide range of deck panel types, metal building wall systems, panels with insulating concrete fill, and plywood assemblies, all used as diaphragms, and under static, cyclic, and dynamic loading. Connection performance, critical to diaphragm behavior, has been evaluated through an extensive test program covering arc-spot (puddle) welds, different types of screws, and power driven pins. These have established fastener strength limits and have been especially important for defining fastener flexibility factors.
