Geomechanics Of Reservoir Induced Seismicity, Thomas Vladut
Geomechanics Of Reservoir Induced Seismicity, Thomas Vladut
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Although induced seismicity associated with the impounding of reservoirs is a relatively rare phenomenon, it should nevertheless be taken into account, particularly in the design of dams located in aseismic zones. The operation of dams is not significantly affected by induced activities: the main concern arises in situations where unexpected events might affect the behavior of the construction due to soil liquefaction or might affect slope stability. This paper reviews the principal elements which are considered to affect the occurrence of the phenomenon: the weight of the water storage, and the development of pore pressure under the storage. Both elements …

Planning Instrumentation Monitoring In Dams, S. N. Guru Rau, R. K. Varma
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
This paper outlines the seismic instrumentation being adopted for river valley projects in India, More than 60% of Indian sub-continent lies in an active seismic belt. Of this the middle and lower Himalayas constitute a major area wherein lies a huge untapped hydro-power potential, Being primarily constituted of younger rock formations, frequented by faults, thursts and shear zones and lying in a high seismic risk zone, observations through instruments play a significant role in perspective planning of projects in this area. Setting up of seismological observatories in advance of construction of dam projects, forms a part of investigative planning to …

Local Soil Effects And Liquefaction In The 1978 Thessaloniki Earthquakes, George Gazetas, John Botsis
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
The geotechnical aspects of three earthquakes that struck the city of Thessaloniki, Greece, on May 25, June 20 and July 4, 1978 are presented. General background information on the observed damage, seismic history and geology of the area is followed by detailed description of soil profiles, structural characteristics and accelerograms of ground motions recorded at three sites. Acceleration spectra are then examined and compared in order to assess the degree to which local and regional geology and soil-structure interaction affected the recorded motion. Finally, the possibility of liquefaction having taken place in a 6 m-thick saturated loose layer of silty …

Attenuation Of Ground Vibration Induced By Dynamical Machinery, S. J. Yang
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Attenuation of ground vibration induced by dynamic machinery is investigated with fundamental theory established for both Rayleigh and body waves. Therefore, for determining such attenuation is established, in which the effects of both of them and a coefficient of attenuation of soil that makes the practical calculation easier are involved. A lot of data in relation to the surface vibration measured at some production shops and construction sites has proved that the developed formula more satisfactory than Bornitz's.

On Surface Waves In A Gibson Half-Space, I. Vardoulakis, V. Dougalis
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Harmonic Rayleigh-type and transverse surface waves in a half-space of incompressible material with constant density and with shear modulus linearly increasing with depth (Gibson half-space) are discussed. Under certain hypotheses a discrete spectrum yielding polynomial Eigen functions is obtained, a fact which makes the eigenvalue problem more tractable. The dispersion laws are presented and evaluated numerically.

Computerized Twist Drill Selection For Cast Iron And Steel, Clinton K. Orth
Computerized Twist Drill Selection For Cast Iron And Steel, Clinton K. Orth
Graduate Research Papers
The science of hole making can hardly be considered new to modern day industry. Evidence of drilling dates back as early as 4000 B.C. However, computers are considered relatively new to industry and their use is growing rapidly. One of the major concerns of industry is to identify a consistent method of selecting the proper drill when given a set of variables. The problem is to identify the sets of variables and select a drill that will give consistent results.

Web Crippling And Combined Web Crippling And Bending Of Steel Decks, Wei-Wen Yu
CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
INTRODUCTION A. General During the period of October 1968 through September 1980, the 1968 Edition of the AISI Specification was used for the design of steel deck webs that could withstand web crippling and combined web crippling and bending. (1) The design formulas used to prevent web crippling were developed primarily on the basis of tests conducted in the 1940's and 1950's at Cornell University. (2-4) Recently, new types of cold-formed steel sections have been developed and used in building construction. The use of unusual geometric configurations has complicated the design of such members. In order to develop new design …

Analysis Of A Solar Collector In An Absorption Cycle Including A Pump Operated By Thermoelectric Cells, Stuart Jee-Fong Chen
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
A mathematical computer model has been developed for the prediction of the thermal performance of a flat-plate solar collector used as the generator for an absorption cycle cooling system. The system employs thermoelectric cells to power its pump. The exponential relationship between the auxiliary energy and the collector area is used to optimize the system. It is predicted that the system will become feasible when the fuel price is raised to four times the current value.

Project Network Scheduling With Limited Resources Using Heuristic Solution Techniques, Enrique J. Daboin Rojas
Project Network Scheduling With Limited Resources Using Heuristic Solution Techniques, Enrique J. Daboin Rojas
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Traditional critical path methods imply the assumption of unlimited availability of resources. Mathematical models and heuristic techniques are two alternatives that consider resource limitation to sequence the activities of a project. This research explores the consideration of project scheduling under resource constraints for the specific case of single resource, single project scheduling. A computer model called GENRES-II search model is developed using a modification of Brooks' algorithm to develop project schedules. The criteria used are various weighted combinations of ACTIM, ACTRES and ACTFOL. An improvement of GENRES-II solutions is obtained when the best set of GEN-II values is input to …
Testing The Radio Shack Random Number Generator To Produce Uniform And Non-Uniform Random Numbers, Enrique Menendez
Testing The Radio Shack Random Number Generator To Produce Uniform And Non-Uniform Random Numbers, Enrique Menendez
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Random numbers are a basic part in a Simulation Model, and they are also used in random sampling. These techniques are employed by quality engineers in the successful execution of their jobs. The every-day use of random numbers, however, often leads to a sense of complacency in he mind of engineers toward the exacting requirements that should be satisfied by the random number process to generate a genuine random number. Microcomputers have become a common and powerful tool that helps managers and engineers in their simulation experiments by providing sequences of random numbers. This research presents a sequence of eight …

An Experimental Comparison Of Cross Correlator Performances Based Upon Signal-To-Noise Ratios, Sunder G. Gopani
An Experimental Comparison Of Cross Correlator Performances Based Upon Signal-To-Noise Ratios, Sunder G. Gopani
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Three commonly employed types of cross correlators were designed using standardized components which closely simulate idealized elements in an effort to experimentally verify the theoretical analysis. These cross correlators are (1) the standard analog cross correlator which consists of bandpass filters, a multiplier and a postmultiplier lowpass filter, (2) the polarity coincidence correlator (PCC) which utilizes a hard clipper in each input channel, and (3) a modified type of PCC which features a hard clipper in only one of the input channels. Two different types of filters viz. (1) the seventh-order Butterworth lowpass filter, and (2) the five-pole Chebyshev lowpass …
Digital Acoustic Tracking Analysis Program, George H. Ford
Digital Acoustic Tracking Analysis Program, George H. Ford
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this report is to investigate the processing of tracking data for acoustic targets. The programs developed for two- and three- dimensional space calculate the target's position via "hyperbolic-fix" navigation (geometric) considerations using the Newton-Raphson algorithm. The computer programs and the tracking solution approach contained herein is based on knowledge of only the sensors' locations and the relative time-difference at which a target's referenced, singular, acoustic pressure wavefronts are received at the sensors. Omnidirectional sensors are found to be sufficient for the two-dimensional space tracking problem. However, it is found that the three-space problem required usage of directional …
Application Of Generalized Geometric Programming In Preliminary Plant Design, Dennis R. Hoerner, Orrin K. Crosser
Application Of Generalized Geometric Programming In Preliminary Plant Design, Dennis R. Hoerner, Orrin K. Crosser
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study utilizes a primal based generalized geometric programming algorithm for the optimal design of a model absorber-stripper process. The GGP algorithm reduces the generalized geometric program to a convex, linear program by two sequential condensation procedures and a logarithmic transformation. Although inactive Inequality constraints and arbitrary variable bounds were easily accommodated by the algorithm, considerable effort was required to activate the inequality constraints which required an equality condition. The GGP algorithm converged to a local minimum from arbitrary starting points for approximately 60% of the trials. © 1981, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
