In this study, the thermal performance of a solar-driven thermoelectric (TE) generator was examined by computer simulation and analytical formulations. The hot junction of the disk-shaped TE module is heated by a conical-shaped solar concentrator reflecting rays onto a cylindrical inner electrode. Controllable cooling water flow cools the outer P ΓÇô N junctions to establish the necessary thermal potential for electric generation. Desired power output can be obtained from a number of TE modules in series and parallel. The …

Simulation Of Traffic At A T-Intersection Using Slam, Karen M. Anderson Oct 1982

Simulation Of Traffic At A T-Intersection Using Slam, Karen M. Anderson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The flow of traffic at an intersection is often controlled by a traffic signal. This research report models a T-intersection with a disjoint network for each direction of traffic flow, eastbound, westbound and southbound. The traffic signal is modeled with a fourth network. Three types of signal control (pretimed, semi-actuated and full-actuated) are modeled to examine the effect of each type on the average delay time and average length of queues for each lane of traffic queue at the intersection. The computer models presented in the report use SLAM computer language to simulate the traffic signal and vehicle flow.

Effects Of Construction Variations Upon Dynamic Moduli Of Asphaltic Concrete, Herbert F. Southgate Oct 1982

Effects Of Construction Variations Upon Dynamic Moduli Of Asphaltic Concrete, Herbert F. Southgate

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The two variables that most influence the behavior of asphaltic concrete pavements are subgrade modulus and thickness of the asphaltic concrete. Other significant variables are: temperature of the asphaltic concrete, asphaltic concrete modulus, frequency of the dynamic loading, asphalt content by weight in mix, and voids in the asphaltic concrete mix.

During a series of Road Rater tests on a experimental pavement in Kentucky, deflection test data varied widely from expected values. Test data reported by Kallas and Riley permitted the development of an equation relating asphaltic concrete modulus to its temperature and to the frequency of loading. However, after …

Engineering Properties Of Kentucky Oil Shales, Vincent P. Drnevich, Tommy C. Hopkins, David L. Allen, Samuel S. Hale Oct 1982

Engineering Properties Of Kentucky Oil Shales, Vincent P. Drnevich, Tommy C. Hopkins, David L. Allen, Samuel S. Hale

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Excavation, handling, and the environmentally safe disposal of spent oil shale and overburden materials require a knowledge of their geotechnical engineering properties. To determine these properties a laboratory investigation of the physical and geotechnical engineering properties was made. The physical tests consisted of mechanical analyses, Atterberg Limits, and specific gravity determinations. Geotechnical properties were determined by moisture-density analyses, triaxial compression, permeability tests, slake-durability, one-dimensional compression tests, and Los Angeles abrasion. A one-dimensional compression test was devised to address the problem of placement, loading, and saturation of the spent shales and overburden materials. The compacted, unprocessed oil shales were more susceptible …

Warrants For Left-Turn Lanes, Kenneth R. Agent Oct 1982

Warrants For Left-Turn Lanes, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Warrants for the installation of separate left-turn lanes were developed. Literature was reviewed, and policies and practices in other states were surveyed. Accident analyses of locations with and without separate left-turn lanes were conducted. Computer simulation was used to determine relationships among traffic delay, load factor, traffic volume, percent left-turns, cycle length, and cycle split. The relationship between left-turn accidents and conflicts was investigated.

Warrants were developed involving the following three general areas:

  1. accident experience,
  2. volumes (based on delay), and
  3. traffic conflicts.

Development Of A 64 To 1 Monolithic Analog Multiplexer, Vincent H. Angleton Oct 1982

Development Of A 64 To 1 Monolithic Analog Multiplexer, Vincent H. Angleton

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A 64 to 1 monolithic multiplexer for video signal switching applications was designed. The performance analysis and the testing of the first devices fabricated and packaged show close agreement in on channel resistance and on channel bandwidth. Other requirements, such as off channel isolation and output signal distortion, have poorer agreement in the calculated values versus the measured data. Arguments for these differences are presented.

Explicit Determination Of The Complex Refractive Index Of An Absorbing Medium From Reflectance Measurements At And Near Normal Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Measurement of reflectance at normal incidence R and its fractional change ΔR/R caused by a change of the angle of incidence from 0 to a small angle ϕ (ϕ≲ 20°) permits explicit determination of both the refractive index n and extinction coefficient k of an isotropic absorbing medium. The medium of incidence (ambient) is assumed to have a known refractive index (e.g., =1 for vacuum or air), and the incident light is either p or s linearly polarized.

Coherence Effects In Synchronously Pumped Mode‐Locked Dye Lasers, Lee W. Casperson Oct 1982

Coherence Effects In Synchronously Pumped Mode‐Locked Dye Lasers, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A formalism is developed for describing the evolution of picosecond mode‐locked pulses in synchronously pumped dye lasers. The finite phase memory of the molecular wave functions is included, and it is found that the resultant coherence effects can be dominant for operation close to exact synchrony. Considerations of the isotropic molecular orientational distribution and the finite vibrational relaxation times are also essential in obtaining quantitative agreement with experimental results.

Speech Spectral Modeling And Speech Synthesis Using Finite Impulse Response Digital Filters, Paul Edward Gordy Oct 1982

Speech Spectral Modeling And Speech Synthesis Using Finite Impulse Response Digital Filters, Paul Edward Gordy

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Synthetic speech can be produced using a discrete-time model of human speech production. This model depends on the use of digital filters to model the spectral characteristics of the vocal tract. Speech spectra can be efficiently encoded using a set of principal components basis vectors; however, these vectors are not in a convenient mathematical form for directly determining a digital filter for the speech production model. If discrete cosine basis vectors are used to approximate the principal components basis vectors, then the cosine basis vector coefficients can be used to determine a Finite Impulse Response(FIR) digital filter for speech spectral …

Fractionation Of Multicomponent Mixtures By Staged Sequence Cyclic Process And Parametric Pumping, Charles Omotayo Kerobo Sep 1982

Fractionation Of Multicomponent Mixtures By Staged Sequence Cyclic Process And Parametric Pumping, Charles Omotayo Kerobo

Dissertations

The continuous fractionation of multicomponent fluid mixtures has been experimentally and theoretically investigated by staged sequence cyclic process and parametric pumping operating in the direct thermal mode.

A multicolumn staged sequence cyclic process for the separation of solute mixtures was developed. The criteria necessary for the continuous fractionation of a system of n solutes with n+1 columns arranged in a series operated with n+1 cyclic variables is presented. The feasibility for practical application of this process was demonstrated by fractionating the model system, O-xylene-Anisole-n-heptane on silica gel. The separation was modeled by one column staged sequence experimental data and by …

Separation Of Proteins Via Ph Parametric Pumping With Electric Field, Helen Conway Hollein Sep 1982

Separation Of Proteins Via Ph Parametric Pumping With Electric Field, Helen Conway Hollein

Dissertations

A new semi-continuous parametric pumping process for the separation of protein mixtures has been developed, based on cyclic variation of pH and electric field. The model system used for this process consisted of a mixture of human serum albumin and human hemoglobin in contact with CM Sepharose cation exchanger. Experimental results show that the protein separation via the pH parapump with electric field is two to three times greater than the results which are obtained in batch chromatography or via either single-column or multi-column parapumps with cyclic variation of pH and ionic strength.

The separation in the new process depends …

Polarization-Preserving Single-Layer-Coated Beam Displacers And Axicons, R. M.A. Azzam, M. Emdadur Rahman Khan Sep 1982

Polarization-Preserving Single-Layer-Coated Beam Displacers And Axicons, R. M.A. Azzam, M. Emdadur Rahman Khan

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

A design procedure is described to determine the thicknesses of single-layer coatings of a given dielectric on a given metallic substrate so that any input polarization of light is preserved after two reflections at the same angle of incidence from a parallel-mirror beam displacer or an axicon. This is achieved by equalizing the net complex p and s reflection coefficients (also called the radial and azimuthal eigenvalues of an axicon) after two reflections. The net polarization-independent reflectance (insertion loss) of the device is computed and found to exceed the net minimum parallel reflectance of the uncoated device for incidence above …

Hotbeds For Transplant Production, George A. Duncan, C. R. Roberts

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

High-dollar-per-acre vegetable crops such as tomatoes, cabbage, and peppers can be an income booster for many Kentuckians.

To be successful on the early market, vegetable seed must be sown from mid-January to mid-March. But, Kentucky weather is too cold for the plants' survival then. Until recently, growers either had to ship plants in from the south or grow their own locally in some type of heated greenhouse.

Unfortunately, finding high-quality, disease-free plants of the desired quantity and variety at the proper time in the south has proven difficult. Likewise, all growers do not have the capital to invest in greenhouse …
