Stationary Property Of Normal-Incidence Reflection From Isotropic Surfaces, R. M.A. Azzam Sep 1982

Stationary Property Of Normal-Incidence Reflection From Isotropic Surfaces, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The complex reflection coefficients for the parallel (p) and perpendicular (s) polarizations of light that are normally incident upon an isotropic surface are proved to be stationary with respect to small changes of the angle of incidence in the neighborhood of zero. This is true not only for a single interface between isotropic media but also for any one-dimensionally inhomogeneous or multilayer reflecting structure that is stratified in the direction of the surface normal. For incident light of certain intensity, phase, and polarization, the intensity, phase, and polarization of the reflected light all remain stationary with …

Diffusion Thermoeffect Measurements Of Heats Of Transport In Ternary Liquid Toluene Chlorobenzene Bromobenzene Mixtures At 25°C And 3°C, Richard L. Rowley, Gerald Platt, Tevin Vongvanich Aug 1982

Diffusion Thermoeffect Measurements Of Heats Of Transport In Ternary Liquid Toluene Chlorobenzene Bromobenzene Mixtures At 25°C And 3°C, Richard L. Rowley, Gerald Platt, Tevin Vongvanich

Faculty Publications

Heats of transport in ternary nonelectrolyte liquid mixtures have been directly measured for the first time. Diffusion thermoeffect measurements have been made for ternary mixtures of toluene-chlorobenzene-bromobenzene at 25 degrees and 35 degrees C. A new boundary sharpening technique was used in addition to a liquid gate withdrawal method. Both techniques yield consistent, accurate values of the heat of transport, but the new cell provides versatility in allowable densities and compositions of the initial phases. Heats of transport were obtained by nonlinear least-squares fitting of calculated to experimental temperature differences measured at positions symmetric about the initial diffusional interface. The …

The Diffusion Thermoeffect In Ternary, Nonelectrolyte Liquid Mixtures, Richard L. Rowley, Gerald Platt, Tevin Vongvanich

Faculty Publications

Expressions for that portion of the heat flux which is due to composition gradients in multicomponent nonelectrolyte liquid mixtures have been formulated in terms of heats of transport. The resultant thermal energy equation in combination with component mass balance equations constitute coupled partial differential equations descriptive of the diffusion thermoeffect in liquid mixtures. These equations were solved with a double perturbation technique subject to initial and boundary conditions consistent with experimental design conditions considered appropriate for successful measurement of multicomponent heats of transport. Based on the adiabatic type cell, the expected temperature response, dependent on cell variables, experimental conditions, and …

Highway Sizing, Joseph D. Crabtree, John A. Deacon Aug 1982

Highway Sizing, Joseph D. Crabtree, John A. Deacon

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A critical examination is made of the conventional method for highway sizing, that is, determination of lane requirements. Ranked hourly traffic volume distributions, obtained from 1977 Kentucky volume stations are examined to test certain assumptions common to the conventional approach. Several of these distributions have no distinct "knee" and, for those which do, the knee is most frequently found outside the normally anticipated range. Of equal importance, the knee location can be arbitrarily altered simply by changing the number of highest volume hours that are examining.

The fundamental fallacy of the conventional procedure is its focus on a single design …

Traffic Accident Rates In Kentucky (1980), Kenneth R. Agent Aug 1982

Traffic Accident Rates In Kentucky (1980), Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A primary objective of this study was to determine average accident statistics in Kentucky in 1980 for use in identifying hazardous locations. To identify locations having an abnormal accident history, norms must be established and these norms must be kept up-to-date to maintain a reliable identification program.

Average accident rates were calculated using several methods of classifying highways. Average rates for counties and cities were calculated, and counties and cities with the highest rates for their population category were identified. A series of curves were drawn giving criteria which can be used to determine whether a particular location has an …

Summary Of Vehicle Classification Data, Joseph D. Crabtree Aug 1982

Summary Of Vehicle Classification Data, Joseph D. Crabtree

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

As part of an attempt to calculate accident rates for different vehicle types on various kinds of roads, it was necessary to determine the percentage of each vehicle type in the traffic stream for each type road. This was accomplished by summarizing Kentucky's Vehicle Classification File. The procedure used in summarizing the file and the results of the summary are presented in this report. Vehicle distributions are reported by number of lanes, by functional classification, by administrative classification, by federal-aid system, by hour of day, by day of week, and by month of year. It is believed this report provides …

An Exploratory Study On The Behavior Of Cold-Formed Steel Wall Studs, Yaochun Zhang, Teoman Peköz Jul 1982

An Exploratory Study On The Behavior Of Cold-Formed Steel Wall Studs, Yaochun Zhang, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

GENERAL Cold-formed steel wall studs are widely used in the U. S. and Canada. The 1980 A.I.S.I Specification (Ref. 1) contains provisions for the design of such wall studs based primarily on the research conducted at Cornell University (Refs. 2 and 3). This research involved theoretical and experimental studies on wall studs subjected axial loads only. The Specification provisions on the case of combined axial and lateral loading were derived intuitively and were made intentionally conservative. The excessive conservatism in the provisions for the combined loading case prevents using wall studs as economically as possible. The primary objective of the …

Taxonomy Of Corynebacterium Plant Pathogens, Including A New Pathogen Of Wheat, Based On Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis Of Cellular Proteins, Randall R. Carlson, Anne K. Vidaver

Biological Process Development Facility: Staff Publications

The known extant plant pathogenic Corynebacterium species were analyzed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of their cellular proteins. The patterns of the protein bands of 13 species and a new corynebacterial wheat pathogen showed seven distinct groups. Five of these groups consisted of only one species each, one group contained four species, and the last group contained the new wheat pathogen and the remaining four species. The pathogens that could not be distinguished by the polyacrylamide gel analysis differed in phenotypic characteristics, including pathogenic specificity. Thus, for these bacteria we propose recognition of the following taxa: C. fascians (Tilford) Dowson, …

Two-Phase Flow Pressure Drop Across Thick Restrictions Of Annular Geometries, Saeed Ghandeharioun

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents the methods of predicting the steady-state two-phase flow (steam and water) pressure drop across the restrictions of annular geometries formed when tubes extend through circular holes in tube support plates. Two approaches are discussed and a detailed sample calculation of the one selected is presented. The major areas of discussion are the orientation of tubes-to-tube support plate holes, and the thickness of tube support plate. Finally, the conclusion gives a comparison of methods and recommendations for future investigations.

Pavement Roughness In Kentucky, Gary W. Sharpe, David H. Cain, Herbert F. Southgate, James H. Havens, Robert C. Deen Jul 1982

Pavement Roughness In Kentucky, Gary W. Sharpe, David H. Cain, Herbert F. Southgate, James H. Havens, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Over two hundred pavement sections in Kentucky have been periodically measured for pavement roughness over a period of several years. This pavement service-life historical data can be used to assess quality of construction, pavement service-life, present and anticipated pavement condition. Road users perception of ride quality can be related to these measurements. Response-type road roughness measuring systems have been used to collect roughness measurements and correlation studies have been performed to relate measurements from current systems. Several factors influence pavement roughness. An early factor is construction workmanship. Other factors are traffic loading, environment, geology, and age.

Hospital Short Term Planning Through Patient Census Forecast, Wenhao Chiu Jul 1982

Hospital Short Term Planning Through Patient Census Forecast, Wenhao Chiu

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

An adequate health care resource allocation in a hospital is directly dependent upon the ability to estimate the hospital's patient census accurately. Efforts to estimate hospital's patient census are classified into two general methods: estimating from historical data, and demographic analysis. This paper takes the position that the estimate from the historical data is more economic and convenient for understanding than the estimate from the demographic analysis. Seven models that predict hospital's patient census by using the hospital's historical data are evaluated to fit the characteristics of each pattern shown in historical information. Where a microcomputer is available, this forecasting …

A Real Time Microprocessor Based Digital Lead-Lag Compensation, Vicente C. Garcia Jul 1982

A Real Time Microprocessor Based Digital Lead-Lag Compensation, Vicente C. Garcia

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The dynamic performance of control systems can be improved by incorporating carefully designed compensators. Historically, these compensators have been implemented with analog hardware. However, digitally based compensator designs offer far superior advantages; such as no aging, repeatability, etc. The major reason for rejecting the digital approach to compensator design has been cost. With the introduction of the INTEL 2920 4-input, 8-output, real-time signal processing chip (with AD and DA on-board), cost is no longer a barrier. In this research paper, the complete software-hardware 2920 design cycle required to implement a lead-lag control system compensator is illustrated.

Also, the downstream flow field was examined using static pressure, pitot pressure, and composition profile data. The jet parameters varied were gapwidth, jet static pressure, and injectant species of either helium or nitrogen. The values of the jet parameters used were 0.039, 0.056,and 0.109 cm for the gapwidth …

An Investigation To Model Radar Backscatter From Ridged First Year Sea Ice, Betty Lou W. Jackson Jul 1982

An Investigation To Model Radar Backscatter From Ridged First Year Sea Ice, Betty Lou W. Jackson

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigates the response of a radar type sensor, the microwave scatterometer, to meter scale roughness of first-year sea ice. The scatterometer measures the absolute backscattered power from a target, and use of the radar equation permits calculation of the surface reflectivity expressed as the radar scattering coefficient, σ0 also called the normalized radar cross section. This thesis develops an empirical, one dimensional model to predict the backscattered power from ridged first-year sea ice of known surface topography, by interpreting the surface as a series of angular facets and summing the proportional power from each facet. The model …

Calculation Of Potential Flow Past Non-Lifting Bodies At Angle Of Attack Using Axial And Surface Singularity Methods, Jin-Yea Shu Jul 1982

Calculation Of Potential Flow Past Non-Lifting Bodies At Angle Of Attack Using Axial And Surface Singularity Methods, Jin-Yea Shu

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Two different singularity methods have been utilized to calculate the potential flow past a three dimensional non-lifting body. Two separate FORTRAN computer programs have been developed to implement these theoretical models, which will in the future allow inclusion of the fuselage effect in a pair of existing subcritical wing design computer programs.

The first method uses higher order axial singularity distributions to model axisymmetric bodies of revolution in an either axial or inclined uniform potential flow. Use of inset of the singularity line away from the body for blunt noses, and cosine-type element distributions have been applied to obtain the …
