Un-Making The Grade: The Relationship Between District Accountability Scores And Property Values, Staci L. Barker Aug 2021

Un-Making The Grade: The Relationship Between District Accountability Scores And Property Values, Staci L. Barker

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

The relationship between socio-economic status (SES) and achievement is well documented. While federal and state accountability systems have attempted to close achievement gaps for economically disadvantaged students, underlying neoliberal assumptions of fair evaluation through ranking lead to a disregard for this context. Within this framework, better measures of SES are needed, as current measures such as free- and reduced-price lunch (FRL) lack the nuance to distinguish between levels and aspects of poverty. Similarly, an understanding of how such metrics influence accountability systems is also needed, particularly newly implemented systems under the Every Student Succeeds Act. Using correlation and regression analysis, …

Improving instructional effectiveness is often a challenging task for teachers working in a struggling school. In many cases, impacting the success of effectiveness in the classrooms is the struggle or inability of teachers to effectively manage their classrooms (Marzano, Marzano, and Pickering, 2003). Instructional coaching can be an effective method to help teachers especially when provided by someone other than an evaluator. The research questions that guided this study were: 1. How receptive are elementary school teachers to accurately self-identify classroom management practices in which improvement is needed? 2. To what extent are elementary school teachers willing to accept non-evaluative …

A Study Concerning Factors That Contribute To School Counselors' Self-Efficacy, Cory J. Neal

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Many school districts and states still require that school counselors have previous teaching experience before one can begin a career in school counseling. There is little to no data to support these claims and the data that is available does not include how the school counselor’s own previous experiences influence their self-efficacy in their current roles. The data for this study was collected through an online survey sent to school counselors in Missouri. The qualitative data was evaluated using a grounded theory approach while the quantitative data was analyzed through a series of t-tests for independent samples, with group membership …

Safety Department Officers' Perceptions: Concealed Carry And The Imposed Risk On Campus, Alaina R. Adkins-Armstrong

Doctor of Education (EdD)

A small number of studies have explored community college safety officers’ perceptions regarding concealed carry on campuses. This understudied topic demands attention as the number of concealed handgun permits increased nationally for the third year in a row (Crime Prevention Research Center, 2021). Data suggests that within the 34 states that require a concealed carry permit, the number of Americans carrying stands at 18.66 million, a 304% increase since 2007 (Crime Prevention Research Center, 2021). As a result of recent state legislation and court decisions, ten states have provisions allowing for concealed carry on public campuses of higher education: Arkansas, …

Using Free And Open Source Software To Teach University Gis Courses Online: Lessons Learned During A Pandemic, Sterling Quinn

Geography Faculty Scholarship

During the remote learning necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, university GIS students did not always have home access to the kinds of software and hardware that they would ordinarily get in their on-campus lab facilities. In this situation, the free and cross-platform nature of FOSS opened the door for some students to continue their GIS education uninterrupted. In this article, I describe how one university allowed students to choose FOSS such as QGIS, PostGIS, and GeoDa as alternatives to proprietary software in upper-division GIS coursework. These were used to teach techniques such as point pattern analysis, visibility analysis, hydrological modeling, …

Models Of The Sociology Minor At Institutions Of Higher Education In The United States, Melinda Messineo, Jay R. Howard

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Although the structure and content of the sociology major has been addressed by a variety of scholars and several American Sociological Association (ASA) task forces over the past three decades, the structure, content, and even the purpose of the sociology minor has been ignored. In this article, we address this gap in the literature through two investigations. The first utilizes an examination of the websites and academic handbooks of 248 bachelor’s degree-granting institutions to discern the structure and contents of the sociology minor. We identify four models for the sociology minor found in U.S. higher education. The second study utilizes …

Teaching For Knowledge Transfer: Best Practices From A Graduate-Level Educational Psychology Distance Learning Program, Bobby Hoffman

University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing

One measure of effective instruction is the ability to solve authentic real-world problems by effectively transferring and applying classroom and textbook knowledge. While many students can productively earn high grades and learn course content, they are not always able to apply the knowledge they gain. As such, this quasi-experimental study compared the comprehensive exit exam results of learners across instructional modalities who completed a prominent graduate-level educational psychology program. ANCOVA revealed superior knowledge transfer for blended-learning students compared to those who completed distance education and significantly greater transfer of declarative, procedural, and self-regulatory knowledge by the blended-learning students. This paper …
