In this narrative, autoethnographic piece, the author contends with the constructs of transactional, transformational, and transgressive forms of educational engagement and teaching, all coming to the fore in a time of tremendous sorrow, loss, stress, and transition. Looking to critical scholars and their works for guidance, the author describes the path into and through a course with teacher candidates, taken on mid-term after the unexpected death of a close colleague.

Video Use In Online And Blended Courses: A Qualitative Synthesis, Eric S. Belt, Patrick R. Lowenthal

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The use of video has become commonplace in education today. Educators are engaging students with video communication technology more frequently than ever before, given COVID-19. However, questions remain on how instructors use video as a communication and teaching tool in online and blended courses. The purpose of this literature review was to synthesize research on the use of video as a teaching tool in online and blended courses. A systematic approach was used to identify 64 peer-reviewed studies published from 2010 to 2020. A qualitative synthesis of the studies resulted in four themes: delivering video lectures, fostering discussions with video, …

Leadership Role In Improving Patient Care At Mount Carmel East, Mrudula Maddipatla

Masters Theses/Capstone Projects

My journey to pursue career in healthcare leadership helped me realize how crucial it is to understand the role of a leader in delivering a better care for the patients. To gain that experience, I reached out to the president of Mount Carmel East (MCE) hospital for a practicum opportunity under her staff. I worked with the executive team and other senior leadership team at MCE during my practicum. I participated in Senior Leadership Team strategic meetings, Gemba walks and various colleague engagement activities.

During my time at MCE, I had many valuable learning opportunities from understanding policies and procedures, …

Biopsychosocial Factors During The Perinatal Period: Risks, Preventative Factors, And Implications For Healthcare Professionals, Ashley J. Blount, Charmayne R. Adams, Ann L. Anderson-Berry, Corrine Hanson, Kara M. Schneider, Gurudutt Pendyala

Office of Health Promotion Scholarship

Women face risks to their wellbeing during the perinatal period of pregnancy. However, there is a dearth of information on perinatal risk factors within the biopsychosocial paradigm. Emphasis is often placed on biological components associated with pregnancy and women’s health. However, psychological and social determinants of health are integral during the perinatal period, and mental wellness is often a determinant for positive maternal and neonatal health outcomes. This article reviews risk factors of perinatal wellness (e.g., physical and nutritional concerns, trauma, discrimination, adverse childhood events) and highlights protective factors for women in their perinatal period. Healthcare professionals can support perinatal …

"It Opened My Eyes...": The Potential Of An Embedded Clinical Experience In Teacher Preparation, Danielle M. Hilaski, Nicole Maxwell, Jennie Jones

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Teacher candidates (TCs) often feel underprepared for their first teaching positions. Teacher education programs are, at least partially, responsible for the level of readiness of their graduating TCs. Fortunately, teacher educators have the capacity to positively change teacher education, creating a more effective, better prepared teaching force. Embedded clinical experiences connected to university literacy courses are one innovative approach to create more purposeful and engaging learning opportunities for TCs. TCs in an early childhood and special education program participated in an embedded clinical experience focused on reading and assessment, which allowed them to implement course content directly with elementary students, …

Virtual Student Engagement Through The Admissions Process, Sonya Hernandez

Leadership Education Capstones

Students pursing higher education are inundated with information meant to recruit them to the college or university. Institutions compete for a prospective student’s attention through multiple mediums and platforms (Hagedorn, 2006). It is to the institutions benefit to continue to update recruitment practices to maintain a competitive advantage. The university admissions office central role is to recruit students and implement recruitment strategies. The COVID-19 global pandemic forced admissions offices to pivot efforts into increasing or relying solely on virtual student engagement to meet safety requirements. The transition highlighted the need to fill gaps in virtual student engagement initiatives and knowledge. …

Examining The Underlying Structure Of Adult Literacy Practices At Home And Work, Melissa R. Killian, George Chitiyo, Nancy J. Kolodziej Ph.D., Ashley Akenson Aug 2021

Examining The Underlying Structure Of Adult Literacy Practices At Home And Work, Melissa R. Killian, George Chitiyo, Nancy J. Kolodziej Ph.D., Ashley Akenson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Adults have similar literacy habits as children, such as reading to gain knowledge or for enjoyment. However, when workplace literacy skills are considered, these practices are not always book related and usually involve informal communication such as collaboration between workers. This study used data from the 2012 Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies to examine adults’ literacy skills. A total of 39 adult literacy skills were examined to explore patterns among them, effectively reducing them to nine interpretable factors. Each factor focused on an area of literacy skills, such as work-related reading, educating others, and writing. The nine …

Seeing The Tress For The Forest: An Analysis Of Novice And Experienced Teachers' Self-Efficacy And Stress, Allison Serceki Aug 2021

Seeing The Tress For The Forest: An Analysis Of Novice And Experienced Teachers' Self-Efficacy And Stress, Allison Serceki

Education (PhD) Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to better understand the relationship between novice teachers’ context-specific self-efficacies and stresses and whether these constructs differed from the self-efficacies and stresses of experienced teachers in middle school and early high school. Novice teachers, or teachers in their first 5 years of teaching, are most susceptible to attrition and turnover, which research indicated is sometimes brought on by stress. Research also showed self-efficacy consistently had a negative correlation to stress. This study used the second-hand dataset obtained from the Teaching and Learning International Survey, focusing on 2560 responses obtained from teachers in the United …

An Examination Of Chinese Undergraduates’ Contemplativity And Academic Stress, Ran Tao Aug 2021

An Examination Of Chinese Undergraduates’ Contemplativity And Academic Stress, Ran Tao

Education (PhD) Dissertations

China has advanced considerably in many fields, which has led to fierce competition among its people. College students are no exception as this competition has brought tremendous academic stress that affects academic performance. Western scholars and researchers found contemplative practice (CP) was helpful to reduce students’ educational stress and improve their study performance. However, no literature was found regarding the potential impact of CP on undergraduates in China, nor was any literature discovered concerning potential differences between genders or academic emphases on students’ conceptions of CP and collegiate stress. The purpose of this study was to fill the gap by …

Empathy Among Nursing Undergraduates At A Chinese Private University, Yuanyuan Zhang Aug 2021

Empathy Among Nursing Undergraduates At A Chinese Private University, Yuanyuan Zhang

Education (PhD) Dissertations

Empathy is an indispensable professional quality in nursing. It correlates positively with the quality of caring, the nurse-patient relationship, patient satisfaction, and the outcomes of treatment. Understanding and cultivating empathy of nursing undergraduates has been one of the main focuses of nursing education. Taking into account the lack of quantitative research into the empathy of nursing undergraduates at China’s private colleges and the inconsistencies in the current literature in terms of assessments of the empathy levels of nursing undergraduates, this study used the Interpersonal Reactivity Index scale to examine the empathy levels of 644 nursing undergraduates at a private university …

Resilience And Mental Health Of Students Attending California's Continuation High Schools, Brianna Meshke Mclay Aug 2021

Resilience And Mental Health Of Students Attending California's Continuation High Schools, Brianna Meshke Mclay

Education (PhD) Dissertations

In California, most students who transfer to continuation high schools have not earned sufficient credits to graduate on time with their peers. As a group, these students are more likely to engage in risk behaviors. Despite this, very few studies have focused on mental health outcomes and sources of resilience for this specific population. This study utilized data from the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) to explore resilience assets and mental health outcomes (depression and suicidality) for continuation high school students. Overall, continuation students had significantly lower levels of most resilience assets and higher rates of both depression and suicidal …

Fighting An Uphill Battle: Black Undergraduate Women Navigating Higher Education While Acknowledging And Challenging Media Portrayals Of Black Women, Kandace Branch

Education (PhD) Dissertations

The stereotypes present in popular television shows often become barriers that limit Black women in higher education, influencing the ways in which they experience college campuses, including how they are treated by faculty and peers and how they interact with others in these spaces. This study examined the perspectives of Black women regarding how media portrayals of Black women and specific popular characters influence their learning opportunities and sense of belonging as undergraduates in college campuses. Black Feminist Theory was employed to analyze the experiences of the participants, Black women, and Critical Race Theory aided in understanding how these women …

Principal Retention: The Perceptions Of Veteran Secondary Principals Who Remain In Their Roles As Instructional Leaders, Coletha Tucker Johnson Aug 2021

Principal Retention: The Perceptions Of Veteran Secondary Principals Who Remain In Their Roles As Instructional Leaders, Coletha Tucker Johnson

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

The role of school principals has changed from being managers to instructional leaders. As a result, many principals do not feel prepared to lead under these conditions, in which some leave their campuses within the first five-years of service. Despite school districts implementing educational reforms to attract and retain principals, turnover persists and is more pervasive in secondary settings when compared to elementary campuses. This study explored the perceptions of six veteran secondary principals (five-years or more at their campus) from two Texas school districts and whether self-confidence in their abilities or self-efficacy impacted their effectiveness as instructional leaders, thus …

Knowledge, Attitudes, Skills, And Social Identity: Experiences Of Social Work Faculty In Managing Controversial Classroom Discussions, Tiara Anice Thomas Aug 2021

Knowledge, Attitudes, Skills, And Social Identity: Experiences Of Social Work Faculty In Managing Controversial Classroom Discussions, Tiara Anice Thomas

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

There is a dearth of literature on how social work faculty manage controversial conversations in the classroom. This qualitative study addresses the deficit in the literature by using Deardorff’s (2008) Intercultural Competence model, the literature on the role faculty social identity plays during teaching, and the lived experiences of eight social work faculty at a four-year public research university. The four themes that emerged in this study’s findings are: 1) preparation, 2) interactions during discussions, 3) engagement, and 4) social identity. Guided by Deardorff’s Intercultural Competence model, the study revealed that faculty knowledge, attitudes, and skills substantially influence the ways …

The Overlooked Majority: The Socialization Of New Field-Trained Community College Professionals, Ke'ana Bradley Aug 2021

The Overlooked Majority: The Socialization Of New Field-Trained Community College Professionals, Ke'ana Bradley

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

Community colleges play a crucial role in the educational outcomes of the communities they serve. Two-year colleges often have fewer staff than their four-year counterparts, many of whom are fulfilling more than one functional area. As such, it is important that these professionals are prepared to perform their roles well and understand the needs of the students they serve. According to research, student affairs is made up of 80-85% of field trained practitioners, or those who enter the field without a graduate degree in higher education. More than 50% leave the field within the first five years and unsuccessful socialization …

Teacher Perceptions Of Educational Supports That Help Bridge The Science Achievement Gap For English Language Learners: A Phenomenological Study, Monica Esquivel Manning

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

English language learner (ELL) students account for 19.6% of the Texas public school system (Texas Education Agency, 2019). National and state assessment data showed a learning gap between ELL students and their non-ELL counterparts, specifically in science (Texas Education Agency, 2017a; United States Department of Education, 2015). This qualitative study was conducted to examine how teachers of ELL students in a dual language program perceived the educational supports they received affected student achievement in science. The teachers who were interviewed had worked diligently to reduce the achievement gap in science. Using social cognitive theory as a theoretical framework, I explored …
