Perfect Love Casts Out Fear: Exploring The Effectiveness Of A Person-Centered Disability Awareness Seminar In A Congregational Setting, Joshua H. Jones Aug 2021

Perfect Love Casts Out Fear: Exploring The Effectiveness Of A Person-Centered Disability Awareness Seminar In A Congregational Setting, Joshua H. Jones

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

People with disabilities and their families frequently experience barriers toward inclusion and belonging in multiple spheres of life. These barriers are also present in Christian congregations. However, many congregations express a godly desire to love people with disabilities and their families without these obstacles.

The Old and New Testaments provide examples of how God’s people sought to love people with disabilities in their midst creatively and intentionally in response to God’s gracious actions, invitation, and command. Recent research in disability studies routinely highlight the necessity of being attentive to the uniqueness of each person with disabilities and his or her …

Mathematics Faculty Scholarship

DBER attracts many faculty from other STEM disciplines, and these faculty have little or no specific training in DBER. DBER requires a mastery of quantitative, qualitative, and/or mixed methodologies, and also a nuanced understanding of breadth of topic, research questions, and theoretical frameworks. This interdisciplinarity is particularly challenging for emerging DBER researchers who often switch into DBER with only discipline specific content and research training. As part of a large study about how STEM faculty become involved with DBER, we interviewed a number of emerging DBER faculty about their pathways into DBER. We conducted a thematic analysis of these interviews …

Implementing Process Pedagogy In The High School Classroom: How To Improve Student Writing While Helping Students Enjoy Writing, Laura Mahaney Aug 2021

Implementing Process Pedagogy In The High School Classroom: How To Improve Student Writing While Helping Students Enjoy Writing, Laura Mahaney

English Theses

Traditionally and currently, teachers also focus on the product and not the process in their own classroom. They will assign a paper with a final due date, students turn in their papers without having anyone else look at it beforehand, and students will get a final grade on what is their first draft. This way of teaching writing does not show students how to improve their writing. With this type of assessment, the natural processes of a person’s mind while writing is ignored; students are expected to have everything in their paper in the first draft and without support. Process …

A Multiplicity Of Journeys: Stem Education Ecosystems As Sources Of Cultural Sustenance, Christopher Louis Beauprey Cardiel Aug 2021

A Multiplicity Of Journeys: Stem Education Ecosystems As Sources Of Cultural Sustenance, Christopher Louis Beauprey Cardiel

Dissertations and Theses

In this document, I outline the context and significance of a research problem faced by both formal and informal science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) educators in the Portland metro area--specifically, the need for greater understanding of the individual and cultural motivations, needs, and agentic behavior of learners, as well as the ways in which these factors intersect with learners' experiences of cultural sustenance within their holistic STEM education ecosystems. I base the significance of this problem on the racial and gender inequities evident in the STEM fields and the social and cultural dynamics that discourage members of these groups …

Using Comics As A Tool To Facilitate Critical Reflective Practice In Professional Education, Oliver Mcgarr, Guillermina Gavaldon, Francisco Manuel Sáez De Adana Herrero

SANE journal: Sequential Art Narrative in Education

This paper reports on the use of comics to help facilitate reflection on one’s past as part of an early childhood education degree programme in Spain. It is common in professional education programmes in the health and education fields to encourage students to reflect on their past in order to explore how this has shaped their development and how it has influenced their career decisions. A challenge with more traditional forms of written reflections in this area is that they often become simple descriptions without any critical reflection on past experiences. To address this, the research reported here aimed to …
