Citation Patterns In Chemistry Dissertations At A Mid-Sized University: An Internal Citation Analysis And External Comparison, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles

Library Publications

This study analyzes the references cited in 34 chemistry dissertations and compares the results with an earlier study of citations in American Chemical Society journals. The dissertations cite more references and older references and a greater diversity of sources. They have the same tendency to heavily cite journal articles from a small core of traditional journals. This study underscores the value of comparing internal citation analyses with external citation analyses, and of analyzing the number of citing authors as well as the number of citations. Interlibrary loan and internal usage statistics were also used to inform collection development and library …

An Exploration Of Parental And Health Professional Perceptions Of Transition For Chronically Ill Students, Iris Robinson

Dissertations

When a young person is diagnosed with a chronic illness, it impacts every phase of the person’s life. During the stages of childhood and adolescence, school is the central socialization site for the student’s developmental and personal identity. That is why it is difficult to replace school as one of the maturing spaces for young people’s transition to adulthood. Chronic illness interrupts the normative life process for an extended period or permanently.

Engaged parents, legal and social advocacy, innovative medical research, public policy, educational workshops, and finally, the consortium of family, health, medical, educational and community support have been advocates …

Foundations Of Linguistics And Identity In L2 Teaching And Learning: Agency Through Linguistic Enrichment, Differentiated Instruction And Teacher Identity, Marnie Jo Petray, Rebecca Shapiro, Gladys M. Vega

Publications and Research

Language, procedure, and identity are L2 teaching/learning essentials that may promote agency and stimulate synergies among knowledge, practice, and reflection (Diaz Maggioli, 2014; Duff, 2012). This meta-report presents three studies that collectively advance agency and endorse linguistic foundations as enrichment, differentiated instruction as engagement, and teacher identity as empowerment. All of these theoretical constructs are key to successful L2 teaching and acquisition. Study 1 quantitatively reports on introductory linguistics’ presence or absence in 114 master’s programs at 54 US institutions. Findings suggest that linguistics’ curricular presence is inconsistent and training for optimal impact in the L2 classroom is lacking. Given …

Apologetics And Science Instruction For Educators In Secondary Christian Schools, Brett Austin Craddock

Masters Theses

Without the incorporation of apologetic instruction into the science classroom students will be ill-equipped to defend the Christian faith. The academic world has seen a decrease of importance that is placed on the Christian mind and therefore the academic world and the majority of scholarly debates have been left to secular thinkers. Secondary Christian schools are in the optimal position to answer the need to raise up a generation of students that may apologetically and academically defend the Christian faith. Through including topics such as Intelligent Design, irreducible complexity, anatomy, and fine-tuning to various fields of science, secondary educators will …

However, I hope you find this piece a bit different from other resources. See, I approached the writing here in some ways as a consejo (a piece of advice) to my younger self. More specifically, I …

Assessments And Accommodations For English Language Learners: A Literature Review, Heidi Jo Bartlett Sep 2021

Assessments And Accommodations For English Language Learners: A Literature Review, Heidi Jo Bartlett

The Nebraska Educator: A Student-Led Journal

While research in how English language learners (ELLs) use assessment accommodations is lacking, there are some general conclusions that one can draw. First, teachers must know their students’ abilities. This includes knowledge of their English proficiency, knowledge of their first language skills, especially as it pertains to literacy skills, and knowledge of their content area understanding. If teachers are aware of areas of weakness in students’ assessments, they should work to compensate for them by either changing their instruction or providing assessment accommodations. Second, it is important for teachers to recognize the various types of assessment accommodations that are available …

Efficacy Of Culturally Responsive Teaching With The 7 Cs Within An Educational Alternative Services High School English Class, Mark A. Simon

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The gap in achievement between White students and their African American and Latinx peers has been documented since the 1960s. Since that time, the federal government, scholars, researchers, and educators have worked to remedy this achievement gap, often with programs labeled as educational alternative services (EAS). Yet, despite programs like EAS showing some successes over the last fifty years, the gap in achievement persists. However, in the 1990s a plausible educational framework emerged, one that has presented educators with the opportunity to understand and teach their students by building strong relationships from a cultural perspective. This set of teaching practices …
