Conflicts based on race and ethnicity have been documented in CSD programs. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a racially based conflict that occurred in a speech-language pathology graduate program at a Historically Black University and how the program director, the university’s chief diversity officer, the program faculty, and students worked together to address it. The paper discusses, in detail, the racially based conflict and the specific steps that the program took to address the conflict and to maintain a racially inclusive atmosphere in the program. The purpose of this reflection on scholarly teaching is to outline the difficulties arising when critical race theory, in its misappropriated and popularized form that dominates current discourse, is deployed as the sole educational framework in CSD education. We wish to offer an alternative framework, pragmatic humanism. The latter is expounded as a paradigm that can reap the benefits of critical race theory without succumbing to the absolutist claims of its popularized variant. The Creation Of A Multicultural Foundational Course: From Research To Practice, Audrey M. Farrugia
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
The American Speech Language Hearing Association requires that multicultural content be included in graduate communication and sciences disorders programs. However, there is a paucity of research on the ways that this is achieved. The purpose of this paper is to describe in detail a multicultural course created from best practices gathered from research literature, conference presentations, and syllabi sources in communication sciences and disorders and share student reflections of the created course. Student feedback from this study shows that foundational courses can improve cultural competency but careful consideration of discussion format and time dedicated to communities should take place.

To be fully prepared to work within an increasingly diverse society, CSD students need to learn more about oppression, racism, equity and inclusion in addition to learning about cultural differences. In this article, a model of Anti-Oppressive Practice (AOP) developed as an integral part of a CSD graduate education curriculum is presented. Rooted in theoretical models including Critical Race Theory and Critical Disability Theory, the AOP curriculum includes eight modules, with each module defining relevant language, introducing concrete action step strategies, and giving students opportunities to practice these steps. This article addresses the role(s) reading and exemplar texts play in the creative writing classroom, as well as the responsibility taken up by the creative writing instructor as they place particular texts before their students. Focusing on the introductory creative writing classroom and beginning with a general overview of the purpose (university-prescribed or generally implied) of such a space, this article promotes expansive and generous reading practices via transnational texts. This article explores options for introductory creative writing curricula that allow for and encourage a greater consideration of personal identity and audience on the part of the student-author. It reaches toward possibilities for revising the introductory creative writing course as a space for student-authors to not only consider the cultural positions of the professional authors they study, but also the ways in which their own subject-positions influence their writing practices, craft choices, and understandings of genre.
