Atypical Sensory Processing And Semantic Language In Autistic Children, Charlene L. Cooper

Autistic children demonstrate a constellation of traits with varying degrees of severity in areas including language differences, restrictive and repetitive behaviors, and sensory processing differences. However, the relationship between sensory processing and these other behaviors are not well understood especially their neurobiological underpinnings. Therefore, this research examined behavioral measures of semantic language, sensory traits, and associated brain networks in 20 autistic children (ages 6-11) and 22 typically developing (TD) age matched peers. Mann-Whitney U tests revealed a strong correlation between sensory traits and general composite and semantic language in both groups of participants. This 2021 study focused on the relationship between not grading formative assessments and summative assessments. The focus was on whether students will do their formative assessments if they know they would not be graded. Furthermore, if they decided to complete or not complete their formative assessments, this study would show the effects on their summative scores. The study lasted for one chapter in their curriculum. The research took place in a North Dakota school, specifically 52 geometry students. Data showed that majority of students will not do their homework if not held accountable. The data also suggests that not grading …

My capstone is just one piece of a greater investigation into homeschooling in America. For my piece, my colleague Keith Medelis reported on the Home School Legal Defense Association, a premiere homeschooling advocacy group that provides legal advice to its members and lobbies against any regulations they find restrictive to the homeschooling process.

Our goal was to see exactly what their mission is because beyond homeschooling, the HSLDA advocates for small government, religious (mainly Christian) freedoms and protecting its members from child protective services.

Due to the level of support needed to become successful, students with moderate to severe disabilities may be placed in a center-based program separate from their typically developed peers. In this placement, students with disabilities, who often have deficits in the areas of communication and social interaction, have little to no access to their peers without disabilities. Therefore, developing and implementing a program that encourages both access to same-age peers and opportunities to improve social interaction skills would be ideal. Research within the field of gifted education has shown that underachievement is a pertinent problem that has affected gifted students for decades. While various factors have been suggested to lead to underachievement, this project focuses on the educator’s role to support the learning needs of gifted students to combat underachievement. Research has shown that differentiation is an effective solution to ensure gifted students’ needs are being met and they are able to reach their full achievement potential. An NYC News Service examination of public filings and other documents shows the HSLDA and its state allies, while pushing to increase homeschooling, simultaneously pushes for legislative changes that have seemingly nothing to do with homeschooling -- in the past year alone, it has been fighting vaccination requirements, opposing a national child abuse registry and limiting the ability of children to get medical treatment.

The current state of education establishes the norm of consistent literacy intervention in elementary education and through specialized accommodations thereafter; unfortunately, many students reach secondary levels without the literacy skills necessary to be successful in their classes and beyond into adulthood. The task of managing this gap is overwhelming, and it stems from various economic, racial, and situational variables that schools cannot address entirely. Instead, teachers may make the choice to improve the equity within their immediate environments by prioritizing equity through direct literacy instruction, consequently providing opportunities for these students to attain those necessary skills for lifelong success.

Although the co-taught classroom is the fastest-growing inclusion model in U.S. public schools, an increasingly-diverse student population coupled with the continued overrepresentation of students of color in special education threatens to undermine its potential as an inclusive space that ensures success for all students. This multiphase, critical qualitative study explored how three pairs of co-teachers navigated race and dis/ability within co-taught classroom spaces serving students with multiple, intersecting identities. Informed by Disability Critical Race Theory (DisCrit), Critical Race Spatial Analysis, and the DisCrit Classroom Ecology framework, this study sought to examine how co-teachers’ own educational histories and beliefs about race …

Previous research in STEM student retention rates showed a gap in knowledge regarding why this group of student experience higher rates of burnout than other groups of students. This study investigated the barriers STEM students at BGSU experienced. A survey was sent out to STEM and non-STEM students alike that asked questions regarding student’s personal history before attending BGSU, their course experiences at BGSU, and the levels of support they have outside of BGSU. The survey data showed that there was little difference in the rates that students switch majors solely based on being in the STEM field. The data …

Purpose: to develop a methodology aimed at improving the biomechanical mobility of discus throwers in special strength training and to determine the effectiveness in pedagogical practice.

Methods: The methods of analysis of scientific and methodological literature, pedagogical observation, anthropometric method, determination of the angle of flight of the disk, pedagogical experiment, pedagogical testing, mathematical statistics were used. (On FREMGE, G-VOLK equipment).

Results: The parameters of the movement of a student athlete in discus throwing were studied and methods of biomechanical analysis were developed.

University educators designed and co-taught a course which involved collaborative artmaking and learning with a community-based arts organization that serves individuals with disabilities. Their goal was to help university students examine the potential of art and how it applies to their personal and professional lives. They sought to better understand how to nurture a feeling of artistic agency in undergraduate students who do not define themselves as artists. Educators found that students benefited from an exploration of art fear through an inclusive approach to art creation.

Gayle Conelly Manchin, federal co-chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), delivered the keynote address at 10 a.m., and ETSU faculty member Dr. Sean Fox, who won the Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching, addressed graduates during the 2 p.m. ceremony.

The Class of 2021 included 1,054 undergraduate students and over 230 master’s candidates.   ETSU also conferred 96 doctoral degrees today.  Of the undergraduate students, 108 graduated summa cum laude, 142 earned magna …
