Translanguaging, Multilingualism, And Multimodality In Children's Mathematics Learning, Cristina Valencia Mazzanti

Education and Child Study: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this qualitative research study is to portray the complex language practices of multilingual children when learning mathematics. To do so, I draw on data collected as part of a three-year research study that was designed to understand the relationship between young children’s language use and mathematics learning, focusing on students’ work as well as interactions collected through research journal entries and audio recordings. I center the practice of thick description as a path to advance disruptive understanding of multimodal representations of children’s language use while learning mathematics. I then consider the necessary movement from a preconceived understanding …

Preferred Leadership Style, Cognitive Operator Competencies, And Senior Leader Competencies Exhibited By United States Marine Corps Special Operations Officers: A Quantitative Non-Experimental Study, Timothy John Scott

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Research identifies existing commonalities between leadership style and conceptual, technical, and interpersonal competencies. Marine Forces Special Operations Command has not explored leadership style and leader competencies and how they relate to the cognitive operator concept described in Marine Special Operations Forces 2030: A Strategic Vision for the Future. By not thoroughly exploring how they relate, Marine Forces Special Operations Command may not understand the level of interdependence between leadership style and senior leader competencies and the mastery of cognitive operator competencies. This quantitative non-experimental study explores the relationship between preferred leadership style, cognitive operator competencies, and senior leader competencies …

Exploring The Role Of Work Orientation And Parental Influence On The Presence Of A Calling In College Students; Implications For Academic Motivation And Satisfaction, Keith Lavine, Philip Blankenship

Psychology Department Faculty Articles

Over the last several decades, there have been numerous studies of both workers and college students who have a calling to a particular line of work. Many positive outcomes have been associated with the presence of a calling, but still much is unknown about both predictors and antecedents of having a calling. This pair of studies explored the extent to which college students' work orientation and parental influence (parents' work orientation and parental pressure) relates to students' presence of a calling, and how, in turn, all of these factors play a role in students' autonomous motivation, satisfaction, and commitment to …

Embracing The Reggio Emilia Approach To Early Childhood Education, Tarabeth Brumfield Heineman Jan 2022

Embracing The Reggio Emilia Approach To Early Childhood Education, Tarabeth Brumfield Heineman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Each year, hundreds of early childhood educators from the many parts of the world travel to a small town in the northern part of Italy to study the arts-based, project focused, a child-initiated method known as the Reggio Emilia approach. This unique approach focuses on infant-toddler through preschool and primary education. While teachers are engaged in professional learning and growth, it is hard to determine how many early childhood programs and classrooms are truly influenced by the Reggio Emilia approach. The purpose of this study was to explore and examine the experiences of five teachers from West Virginia who have …

Toward Equitable And Inclusive School Practices: Expanding Approaches To "Research With" Young People, Alison Cook-Sather Jan 2022

Toward Equitable And Inclusive School Practices: Expanding Approaches To "Research With" Young People, Alison Cook-Sather

Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship

This commentary links child-family research to the systematic inquiry approaches under the umbrellas of student voice and youth participatory action research. It reviews the underlying premises of the latter two bodies of work, including recognizing young people as knowers, partners, and change agents through conducting research with rather than on children and youth. It highlights how the articles included in this special issue challenge us to consider literacy not simply as a language competency but also as a life capacity that must be developed in relationship and in real, sometimes devastating, and always complex, human circumstances. The commentary concludes with …

Cognitive And Affective Academic Self-Concepts: Which Predicts Vocational Education Students’ Career Choice?, Monica W.C. Choy, Alexander Seeshing Yeung

Faculty of Management & Hospitality (THEi)

Grounded in self-concept theory, this study examined the predictability of cognitive and affective academic self-concepts in relation to vocational education students’ education and career choice outcomes in the Hong Kong HE setting in two studies (Ns = 384 and 476). Structural equation modeling revealed that sense of competence (i.e., cognitive) is more related to competence/performance-based outcomes (i.e., operational capability and resilience at work in Study 1; and competition in Study 2). Liking of the vocation (i.e., affective) is more related to non-performance-based emotional-motivational outcomes (i.e., career intention in both studies and educational aspiration in Study 2) than is …
