The Living Lab: Instructional Design Interventions To Improve Communication And Equity In Federal Housing Programs, Joana I. Camp

Knowledge and Creativity Expo

The Living Lab is an independent applied research project informed by my 25 years of lived experience as a Section 8 voucher holder, examining how instructional design strategies can improve administrative workflows, communication, and equitable access within the Housing Choice Voucher Program. Drawing on sustained participation, the research identifies two primary systemic barriers: the federally mandated 15-day inspection period and incomplete Request for Tenancy Approval (RFTA) packets. To address these issues, the project developed the RFTA Roadmap—a zero-cost, clarity-driven communication tool that embeds sequential instructions directly within procedural workflows, mitigating the Split-Attention Effect and cognitive “Bandwidth Tax” associated with standard …

“I’M So Hungry”: Assessing Stem Sensemaking Through Data-Informed Writing, Bailey Nafziger, Alesia Mickle Moldavan, Katie Brkich

Elementary & Special Education: Faculty Publications

To engage elementary learners in the complex task of STEM sensemaking, teachers must entice and inspire learners to ask questions, explore, and communicate their findings. This article shares a 5E/3D lesson designed and taught in our elementary science methods courses to model how preservice teachers can integrate literacy and mathematics into a science investigation for STEM sensemaking. We modified a traditional lesson on bird beak adaptations to have a differentiated, interdisciplinary writing component justified by data. We discuss why data-supported literacy is a non-negotiable in science education reforms and how teachers can differentiate tasks to make scientific writing more approachable …

Endowed With Intelligence From On High: Scriptural Patterns Of Divinely Augmented Knowing, Yoshihiko Ariizumi Mar 2026

Endowed With Intelligence From On High: Scriptural Patterns Of Divinely Augmented Knowing, Yoshihiko Ariizumi

Learning, Teaching, & Researching Optimization

The four standard works of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints contain numerous accounts in which individuals exhibit intellectual capacities — of perception, reasoning, problem-solving, and articulation — that demonstrably exceed their natural endowments and circumstances. This essay identifies twenty such accounts, organizes them into five conceptual typologies, and draws from each typology a set of concrete, actionable proposals for faculty at Brigham Young University who seek to integrate divine assistance into their scholarly and pedagogical work. The central argument is that the patterns encoded in Latter-day Saint scripture constitute not merely historical records of miraculous intervention but …

Clinicians’ Perceived Preparedness To Support Clients Who Have Co-Occurring Disorders, Jessica A. Love Jordan, Joseph Day

Journal of Applied Disciplines

Co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders are prevalent, yet many clinicians feel underprepared to provide integrated care for this population. This study explores the factors influencing clinicians' perceived preparedness and objective knowledge in treating clients with co-occurring disorders. Data were collected from 131 clinicians using the CODECAT EZ 2.0 and TIP ZIP assessments to evaluate their competence in co-occurring disorders treatment. Results indicate that while participants held positive attitudes toward integrated care, their practical knowledge and skills were often rated as average or below. Education, clinical experience, and continuing education were found to significantly influence both perceived preparedness and …

The Classroom Assessment Self-Efficacy Survey For Preservice Teachers: A Validation Study, Yiyun Fan, Timothy Folger, Connor Sondergeld, Toni A. May, Gregory E. Stone

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Preservice teachers often lack confidence in classroom assessment, highlighting the need for robust tools to measure assessment self-efficacy. The Classroom Assessment Self-Efficacy Survey (CASES) was designed to address this need. It comprises 24 items across two subscales: Evaluating Others’ Confidence (EOC) and Personal Performance Confidence (PPC). This study examined the psychometric properties of CASES using 223 responses from preservice teachers. Rasch modeling and other statistical techniques were applied to evaluate validity evidence based on response processes, internal structure, and relations to other variables. Results showed that CASES functioned as intended. Rating scale use was consistent with expectations, and reliability and …

Project Create: State-Wide Partnership For Producing Highly Qualified Special Education Teachers, Joe P. Sutton, Holly A. Pae, Shirley C. Bausmith, Dava M. O'Connor, Susan D. Rurant

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina

The highly qualified teacher mandate introduced under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 exacerbated the already well-documented shortage of special educators nationwide. With almost 40% of its special education teachers holding emergency/provisional licenses at the time, South Carolina faced a great challenge in meeting new accreditation requirements. This article examines how Project CREATE (Centers for the Re-education and Advancement of Teachers in special Education), a personnel preparation initiative funded by the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE), refortified the State’s special education teacher force. Project success attributed chiefly to collaboration among SCDE, local education agencies, and institutions of …

Classroom Climate And Teacher Effectiveness: A Study Of Second-Grade Classrooms, Nancy Ratcliff, Cathy Jones, Emma Savage-Davis, Heather Sheehan, Gilbert Hunt

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina

This paper investigates the differences that exist between the climates in second-grade classrooms where teachers are perceived as needs improvement by their principals and in classrooms where teachers are perceived as strong by the same principals. Based on a comparative research design with quantitative analysis conducted during the fall semester of the 2008 school year, the study finds significant differences in classroom management, teacher and student interactions, questioning, and student time- on-task. Research findings provide implications to help improve both pre-service and in-service training of elementary school teachers.

Early Childhood Pre-Service Teachers' Perceptions Of Scientists At Work, Tenisha L. Powell, Susan Green Mar 2026

Early Childhood Pre-Service Teachers' Perceptions Of Scientists At Work, Tenisha L. Powell, Susan Green

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina

Early childhood teachers play a vital role in creating young children’s perceptions about science and scientists. Stereotypical perceptions of scientists and science may be detrimental to young children because these beliefs limit the possibility that science is accessible to all. To assist children in broadening their thinking about science, teachers must first gain knowledge about their own beliefs and perceptions. Several researchers have found that "teachers tend to teach in the same ways in which they were taught when they were students" (Finson, Thomas & Pedersen, 2006). In this study, 33 early childhood pre-service teachers were asked to "draw a …

The Boys Like Action And The Girls Like Emotion: Teaching Social Studies In Single-Sex Classrooms, Timothy Lintner

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina

The State of South Carolina has embraced single-sex education to a greater degree (and at a quicker pace) than any other state in the union. Yet, given this push for single-sex classrooms, there is scant research that specifically addresses what instructional practices “work best” when teaching boys and girls separately. This study focuses on the practices and perceptions of teaching social studies within select single-sex elementary classrooms.

No Kidding About "Kiddie Lit": The Importance Of Supporting Novice And Experienced Teachers In Using Children's Literature To Enhance Literacy, Engage Critical Thinking, And Encourage Equity, Linda Karges-Bone

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina

The importance of preparing teacher candidates to use children's literature as a tool for encouraging literacy and providing equity in their future classrooms is a common thread in Teacher Preparation programs. However, the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of candidates in today's programs may be at odds with what university faculty and the demands of the classroom require. Candidates' own literacy and appreciation of children's literature demonstrates troubling inconsistencies that could impact their own and their future students' performances. This article examines the current situation and offers strategies for engaging candidates and classroom teachers in the pursuit of children's literature to …
