Advanced Education Programs Faculty Publications
Online education programs are on the rise and institutions of higher learning are utilizing Learning Management Systems (LMS) to facilitate online learning. The Community of Inquiry (CoI; Garrison et al., 1999) framework identifies three categories of cognitive presence, social presence, and teaching presence to guide the development of online instruction and has been adopted by numerous institutions of higher learning. This article identifies instructional strategies conducive to the design of online presence using the CoI framework to ensure quality learning experiences in online special educator preparation programs. We address some of the features of LMS system tools present in Canvas …

Understanding Faculty Experiences In Implementing Accessible Course Design Strategies, Stacy Rice
Understanding Faculty Experiences In Implementing Accessible Course Design Strategies, Stacy Rice
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Faculty who have experience working with individuals with disabilities are likely to have positive feelings about accessibility however, that does not always lead to faculty adoption of accessible course design practices. A gap existed in academic research about what was known of faculty experiences in the implementation of accessible course design practices at a 4-year university in the Midwest. Exploring faculty experience gave insight to future programming needs. Guided by Mezirow’s transformational learning theory, this qualitative project study explored faculty experiences while implementing accessible course design practices to improve access for students with disabilities. Sixteen faculty participated in 1:1 interviews …

Relational Health, Minority Stress, And Psychological Well-Being Among Sexual Orientation And Gender Minority Counseling Students, Jinnelle V. Powell
Relational Health, Minority Stress, And Psychological Well-Being Among Sexual Orientation And Gender Minority Counseling Students, Jinnelle V. Powell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Sexual orientation and gender minority (SGM) counseling students in the United States are exposed to minority stress, which has been linked to psychological distress, during counselor training. There is an expectation that counseling students are well so that it does not interfere with their helping role. Scholarship in other disciplines shows that a sense of belonging and community can serve as protective factors against minority stress for SGM individuals. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to investigate the influence of minority stress and relational health (in counselor education and broader communities) on SGM counseling students’ psychological well-being, a …

Psychology Faculty Publications
Persistent somatic symptoms (PSS) are common in all fields of medicine. Current classification systems for mental disorders in this field, i.e. Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD; DSM-5) or Bodily Distress Disorder (BDD; ICD-11), now stress the relevance of psychological features associated with the physical complaints. It is well known that psychological criteria are among the relevant risk factors for the development and/or worsening of persistent physical symptoms, however, the selected diagnostic criteria remain subject to debate. Numerous psychological concepts have been studied and discussed in the scientific field. However, empirical evidence remains scattered, individual factors have not been reviewed systematically, and …

Elementary Teachers’ Perceptions Of Closing The Math Achievement Gaps Between Black And White Students In Grades 3–5, Carla Shantell Waller
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem underpinning this study was a pronounced achievement gap between Black and White students, evident in standardized test score pass rates of third through fifth graders, in a school district in the U.S. state of Virginia. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the extent to which culturally responsive instructional practices influence elementary teachers' perceptions, approaches, successes, and challenges in closing the differences in standardized math scores between Black and White students in Grades 3 through 5. Gay’s work on culturally responsive teaching, which encompasses theory, research, and evidence-based instructional approaches teachers can implement to address …

A Multi-Year Longitudinal Study Exploring The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Students’ Familiarity And Perceptions Of Active Learning, Briana Craig, Jeremy L. Hsu
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
The COVID-19 pandemic caused nearly ubiquitous emergency remote teaching in both secondary and post-secondary education. While there has been a plethora of work examining how instructors adjusted classes to incorporate active learning during emergency remote teaching, there has only been minimal work examining how such emergency remote teaching may have influenced students’ perceptions of active learning. Here, we conduct a longitudinal multi-cohort study at one institution across nine semesters before, during, and after emergency remote teaching due to the pandemic to explore how college students’ familiarity and perceptions of active learning have shifted over time because of the pandemic. Our …

A Tale Of Two Low-Income, First-Generation Engineering Students: Well-Being, Belonging, And The Role Of Chosen Family, Justin C. Major
First-Generation Symposium
Belonging has been identified as an important, if not the most important, factor impacting the success of college students, especially (multi)marginalized students in engineering programs. Well-being and belonging are deeply entwined, helping to explain how the strength of students affinities lead them to feel a sense of true happiness that guide their holistic success. In this presentation, I present two differing narrative stories from Samantha and Rocky, two non-white, low-income, first-generation women in engineering. At the time of their narratives, both women were in the fourth year of their engineering degrees; however, Samantha was graduating and Rocky was not. In …

Classroom Routines To Support Inclusion And Engagement For First Gen Students, Jill Perry, Robert Wieman
First-Generation Symposium
Though First Generation Students are a diverse group, many of them encounter common challenges within the college setting. First Generation Students often worry that college education is not for them, that they do not belong, leading to feelings of loneliness, isolation and alienation. Social interactions can feel like a stressful test of suitability and belonging. This can threaten academic success, especially in classes that require discussion, participation, and risk-taking. This workshop seeks to support faculty in addressing these challenging feelings and supporting positive academic behaviors.

First-Gen Students: Finding Their Purpose, Meredith Brown, Lamont Eli Booth
First-Generation Symposium
The life of a first generation college student is one that is complex. Not only because of the fact they are the first in their family to embark on a college journey but because of the experiences they encounter. The various journeys they embark on throughout their time in college is what makes each student unique in their own right. And all of this is attributed to one thing, purpose. Without purpose, the journey of a college student is one without a destination. One that is just going through the motions. For our first generation college students, we want them …

Are State Comprehensive Institutions Prepared For Ai? Not Yet., Brent J. Goertzen
Teacher-Scholar: The Journal of the State Comprehensive University
The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has profound implications for higher education and teaching and learning. The present study, conducted at a state, comprehensive university (SCU) is the US Midwest, evaluated how effective faculty in a leadership focused program are at differentiating between human or AI-generated content. Participants reviewed 12 “student assignments” representing short answer essays, and completed the following tasks: 1) evaluated the assignment on three dimensions of the grading rubric; 2) assigned a percent grade; 3) indicated whether it was human or AI-generated; and 4) provided a rationale for their selection.

The Transmission Of Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Kunjal Patel, Aleesha Thomas
Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal
The existence of Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OPSCC) has recently been found to have correlations with the Human Papillomavirus. HPV-associated OPSCC exhibits a unique method of infection and transmission and has made this branch an emerging disease in the recent decade. This systematic review of the literature was conducted to further explore research into Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Cancer (OPSCC). Commonly referred to as “throat cancer”, this growth originates in the oropharynx. Symptoms of this condition include sore throat, lumps in the neck, and difficulty with swallowing. OPSCC has many variants but has shown a strong association with Human Papillomavirus (HPV), …

History Of Clover Leaf Syndrome, Isabella Perez
Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal
The purpose of this paper is to summarize the history of clover leaf syndrome and describe the newest advancements made to treat it. Clover leaf syndrome is more formally referred to as Kleeblattschadel syndrome. Information was gathered from several scholarly, peer-reviewed articles, and was condensed down into the key takeaways. This syndrome impacts the formation of the skull due to premature fusion of its sutures, creating a tri-lobar skull that resembles a clover leaf. This premature fusion is referred to as a type of craniosynostosis and has been linked to causing several other health complications ranging in severity. This is …

Student Protest Publications At Gettysburg College, Audrey U. Bergan
CAFE Symposium 2024
Student protest publications written in the 1950s and 1960s of Gettysburg College history were generally regarded as passion projects, as the campus did not foster an activist culture. However, these publications had various missions. Black Awareness aimed to educate the predominantly white student population on the experiences of Black students both on and off campus. College Crier published polling information about opinions on school, national, and international issues. EATSIT wanted to challenge the status quo and attempted to shock readers with vulgar illustrations and sexual references. Overall, this project aimed to discover what Gettysburg College students were writing about, and …
