Assessing The Economic, Energy, And Environmental Impacts Of A Bridge Replacement Project, Elizabeth Hazzard, Phil Lewis Mar 2015

Assessing The Economic, Energy, And Environmental Impacts Of A Bridge Replacement Project, Elizabeth Hazzard, Phil Lewis

The Professional Constructor

As the nation moves toward more sustainable energy and environmental standards, it is important to examine all sources of fuel consumption and pollution, including heavy-duty diesel (HDD) construction equipment. In order to quantify these sources at the project level, they must be identified with their respective activities. A case study was performed on an Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) bridge replacement project in order to establish a baseline estimate of real-world equipment activity, fuel use, and emissions data. These data were collected on a daily basis via jobsite visits and included specific information such as the equipment’s model year, engine …

Analysis Of Green Building Initiatives On U.S. University Campuse, Dennis C. Bausman, Ben Mueller

The Professional Constructor

As population expands and resource consumption grows, interest in sustainable practices continues to intensify. Universities and colleges in the U.S. have been leading the trend toward building certification and green initiatives to reduce energy consumption, lower water consumption, and recycle solid waste. This study investigates the extent to which green practices are implemented on new construction and the renovation of existing building stock on university campuses across the United States. The study also examines the financial analysis techniques institutions use to assess and prioritize green initiatives on new and existing facilities. The population selected for this study was two hundred …

Language Use In Consultation: Can “We” Help Teachers And Students?, Daniel S. Newman, Meaghan C. Guiney, Courteney A. Barrett Mar 2015

Language Use In Consultation: Can “We” Help Teachers And Students?, Daniel S. Newman, Meaghan C. Guiney, Courteney A. Barrett

Psychology Faculty Publications

Analyzing the use of function words such as pronouns in conversation is an increasingly popular approach in social psychology, but has not yet been applied to the study of school-based consultation. The two central purposes of this study were to: (1) examine how language is used by consultants-in-training (CITs) and consultees within a collaborative model of consultation, and (2) to explore the relation between language use and the collaborative relationship, consultee outcomes, and client outcomes. Analyses focused on CITs’ (n = 18) and consultees’ (n = 18) use of pronouns in a problem identification and analysis (PID/PA) …

Cohen Factorizations: Weak Functoriality And Applications, Saeed Nasseh, Sean Sather-Wagstaff Mar 2015

Cohen Factorizations: Weak Functoriality And Applications, Saeed Nasseh, Sean Sather-Wagstaff

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

We investigate Cohen factorizations of local ring homomorphisms from three perspectives. First, we prove a “weak functoriality” result for Cohen factorizations: certain morphisms of local ring homomorphisms induce morphisms of Cohen factorizations. Second, we use Cohen factorizations to study the properties of local ring homomorphisms (Gorenstein, Cohen–Macaulay, etc.) in certain commutative diagrams. Third, we use Cohen factorizations to investigate the structure of quasi-deformations of local rings, with an eye on the question of the behavior of CI-dimension in short exact sequences.

The Use Of Meta-Analytic Statistical Significance Testing, Terri D. Pigott, Joshua R. Polanin Mar 2015

The Use Of Meta-Analytic Statistical Significance Testing, Terri D. Pigott, Joshua R. Polanin

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

Meta-analysis multiplicity, the concept of conducting multiple tests of statistical significance within one study, is an underdeveloped literature (Tendal, Nüesch, Higgins, Jüni, & Gøtzsche, 2011). We address this issue by considering how Type I errors can impact meta-analytic results, suggest how statistical power may be affected through the use of multiplicity corrections, and propose how meta-analysts should analyze multiple tests of statistical significance. The context for this study is a meta-review of meta-analyses published in two leading review journals in education and psychology. Our review of 130 meta-analyses revealed a strong reliance on statistical significance testing without considering of Type …

Existence Of Solutions For A Variable Exponent System Without Ps Conditions, Li Yin, Yuan Liang, Qihu Zhang, Chunshan Zhao Mar 2015

Existence Of Solutions For A Variable Exponent System Without Ps Conditions, Li Yin, Yuan Liang, Qihu Zhang, Chunshan Zhao

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

In this article, we study the existence of solution for the following elliptic system of variable exponents with perturbation terms − div |∇u| p(x)−2∇u) + |u| p(x)−2u = λa(x)|u| γ(x)−2u + Fu(x, u, v) in R N , − div |∇v| q(x)−2∇v) + |v| q(x)−2 v = λb(x)|v| δ(x)−2 v + Fv(x, u, v) in R N , u ∈ W1,p(·) (R N ), v ∈ W1,q(·) (R N ), where the corresponding functional does not satisfy PS conditions. We obtain a sufficient condition for the existence of solution and also present a result on asymptotic behavior of solutions at …

"Friending" Students On Social Media, Charles J. Russo Mar 2015

"Friending" Students On Social Media, Charles J. Russo

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

The use of social media, particularly services such as Facebook and Twitter, has grown exponentially in recent years. Yet to date, relatively little litigation has arisen around the issue of teachers and other educators engaging in questionable or inappropriate use of social media when communicating with students. Even so, parental complaints do arise when teachers share inappropriate communications with students through social media. Consequently, as social networking continues to increase, school business officials and other education leaders should devise policies to help deal with this growing trend.

Given the widespread use of social media, this column examines emerging legal questions …

How Cornerstone Changed My Teaching, Story 2, Susan Roberts-Dobie Mar 2015

How Cornerstone Changed My Teaching, Story 2, Susan Roberts-Dobie

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

For two years (2012-13 and 2013-14), I took a break from one of my major classes to teach a section of Cornerstone. It was a pretty big leap for me, given I had no formal academic preparation in teaching speaking or writing, but I was intrigued by the opportunity to work with freshmen, and after ten years of teaching the same preps, I needed to stretch a little. The learning curve was steep, but well supported by the leadership team. Now that I have returned to my home department full time, I can see three ways Cornerstone has changed my …

Course-Embedded Peer Mentor Program, Kristin Woods

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The involvement of peer leaders has been a key feature of First-Year Cornerstone since early in its development, reflecting the value placed on collaboration between students, faculty members, and student affairs staff from the beginning of the Foundations of Excellence process. Early on, we envisioned course-embedded peers as teaching assistants who would collaborate with Cornerstone faculty members on classroom activities and provide academic assistance to first-year students. After the first two years of the program, it was clear that students viewed their peer teaching assistants (PTAs) as helpful, approachable guides through their transition to college. While academic support was one …

Here at Rod Library, librarians are always looking for new and different opportunities to reach out to students and faculty. With the deluge of information in the world today, it is even more crucial for students to learn and utilize information literacy skills. When the Cornerstone program was created, the librarians were asked to participate.

Cornerstone Commitment To Collaboration, Debra Young Mar 2015

Cornerstone Commitment To Collaboration, Debra Young

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

I’m a bit of a magpie when it comes to teaching. I love to watch outstanding teachers, collect bits and bobs of their best techniques, and see how I can learn from them. It doesn’t matter if the discipline relates to mine; if it’s shiny, I’m curious about it.

Cornerstone is perfect for a magpie like me. As an interdepartmental program, the instructors are drawn from across campus, bringing the best of their disciplines with them. All are dedicated to collaboration, and time is set aside to ensure collaboration is possible.

To Build A Foundation, Nichole Zumbach Harken, Rachel Morgan

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Just like a cornerstone was once placed to square and level a building during construction, a successful Cornerstone class provides a UNI student with the skills of communication, civility, thinking, and success - the same skills he or she will need to be a citizen in a college community and beyond. The image below appears on almost every Cornerstone syllabus, and it also reminds us that as college instructors we’re in the business of building professional, prepared citizens.

Tier 1 Intervention: Dropout Screening & Early Warning, Natalie Hoff, Amber Olson, Reece L. Peterson Mar 2015

Tier 1 Intervention: Dropout Screening & Early Warning, Natalie Hoff, Amber Olson, Reece L. Peterson

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Conclusion

Understanding the various risk factors and how they may impact a student’s success in school or their decision to drop out is very important. Identifying these factors and understanding which students are at-risk can help schools to take action early and reduce dropout rates. One method of doing this is to implement a universal, or school-wide, dropout screener. These screeners flag students at risk for individual or multiple variables and are helpful in keeping track of which students are in need of immediate assistance or intervention, which students should be watched carefully, and which students are on track for …

Principals’ Use Of Classroom Walkthrough Observations To Improve Instruction: A Grounded Theory, Mitchell R. Kubicek Mar 2015

Principals’ Use Of Classroom Walkthrough Observations To Improve Instruction: A Grounded Theory, Mitchell R. Kubicek

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this grounded theory study was to generate a theory that explains the process of improving instruction in Nebraska public schools through the use of classroom walkthroughs. Classroom walkthroughs are brief, frequent, and unannounced observations conducted by building principals and other instructional leaders. Five Nebraska public school principals were invited to participate in taped interviews. Snowball and chain sampling was used to select additional teacher participants for interviews. Through these interviews conceptual labels were assigned, a core category (phenomenon) identified, and a theoretical model developed describing: (a) causal conditions that influence the phenomenon, (b) strategies that result from …

The Role Of Nebraska Public Elementary School Principals In The Preparation For State-Wide Testing: A Mixed Methods Study, Carrie L. Kolar Mar 2015

The Role Of Nebraska Public Elementary School Principals In The Preparation For State-Wide Testing: A Mixed Methods Study, Carrie L. Kolar

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Assessment is used to determine whether students are meeting the goals of education. In Nebraska, the goals are measured through statewide testing to meet the requirements of No Child Left Behind. As the requirements of No Child Left Behind increase, this study described the strategies used by Nebraska public elementary school principals in an effort to improvement student achievement.

The researcher gathered literature in order to identify the role of the principal in the assessment process and found the focus to be on the preparation of the statewide testing but little on the role of the principal. The literature revealed …

A Case Study: Exploring The Experiences Of Administrators And Teacher Leaders In A Midwestern Turnaround School, Bary Habrock Mar 2015

A Case Study: Exploring The Experiences Of Administrators And Teacher Leaders In A Midwestern Turnaround School, Bary Habrock

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Economic conditions too often create disadvantages for students and their achievement in schools (Reeves, 2004). Educators must better understand high poverty and high minority schools that overcome the odds to improve student achievement. Researchers have studied turnaround schools that improve student achievement in chronically low-performing schools in a relatively short time period (Herman, Dawson, Dee, Greene, Maynard, Redding, & Darwin, 2008). Still there is inadequate national research on the actual experiences of principals and teachers in these schools as told through their perspectives.

This study identified themes from participant interviews to add to the research currently available in this area. …
