To Build A Foundation, Nichole Zumbach Harken, Rachel Morgan

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Just like a cornerstone was once placed to square and level a building during construction, a successful Cornerstone class provides a UNI student with the skills of communication, civility, thinking, and success - the same skills he or she will need to be a citizen in a college community and beyond. The image below appears on almost every Cornerstone syllabus, and it also reminds us that as college instructors we’re in the business of building professional, prepared citizens.

Tier 1 Intervention: Dropout Screening & Early Warning, Natalie Hoff, Amber Olson, Reece L. Peterson Mar 2015

Tier 1 Intervention: Dropout Screening & Early Warning, Natalie Hoff, Amber Olson, Reece L. Peterson

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Conclusion

Understanding the various risk factors and how they may impact a student’s success in school or their decision to drop out is very important. Identifying these factors and understanding which students are at-risk can help schools to take action early and reduce dropout rates. One method of doing this is to implement a universal, or school-wide, dropout screener. These screeners flag students at risk for individual or multiple variables and are helpful in keeping track of which students are in need of immediate assistance or intervention, which students should be watched carefully, and which students are on track for …

Principals’ Use Of Classroom Walkthrough Observations To Improve Instruction: A Grounded Theory, Mitchell R. Kubicek Mar 2015

Principals’ Use Of Classroom Walkthrough Observations To Improve Instruction: A Grounded Theory, Mitchell R. Kubicek

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this grounded theory study was to generate a theory that explains the process of improving instruction in Nebraska public schools through the use of classroom walkthroughs. Classroom walkthroughs are brief, frequent, and unannounced observations conducted by building principals and other instructional leaders. Five Nebraska public school principals were invited to participate in taped interviews. Snowball and chain sampling was used to select additional teacher participants for interviews. Through these interviews conceptual labels were assigned, a core category (phenomenon) identified, and a theoretical model developed describing: (a) causal conditions that influence the phenomenon, (b) strategies that result from …

The Role Of Nebraska Public Elementary School Principals In The Preparation For State-Wide Testing: A Mixed Methods Study, Carrie L. Kolar

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Assessment is used to determine whether students are meeting the goals of education. In Nebraska, the goals are measured through statewide testing to meet the requirements of No Child Left Behind. As the requirements of No Child Left Behind increase, this study described the strategies used by Nebraska public elementary school principals in an effort to improvement student achievement.

The researcher gathered literature in order to identify the role of the principal in the assessment process and found the focus to be on the preparation of the statewide testing but little on the role of the principal. The literature revealed …

A Case Study: Exploring The Experiences Of Administrators And Teacher Leaders In A Midwestern Turnaround School, Bary Habrock Mar 2015

A Case Study: Exploring The Experiences Of Administrators And Teacher Leaders In A Midwestern Turnaround School, Bary Habrock

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Economic conditions too often create disadvantages for students and their achievement in schools (Reeves, 2004). Educators must better understand high poverty and high minority schools that overcome the odds to improve student achievement. Researchers have studied turnaround schools that improve student achievement in chronically low-performing schools in a relatively short time period (Herman, Dawson, Dee, Greene, Maynard, Redding, & Darwin, 2008). Still there is inadequate national research on the actual experiences of principals and teachers in these schools as told through their perspectives.

This study identified themes from participant interviews to add to the research currently available in this area. …

About The Chinese School Of Comparative Literature, He Lin, Danqing Huang

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "About the Chinese School of Comparative Literature" He Lin and Danqing Huang discuss the development of the Chinese school of comparative literature since the 1980s. Lin and Huang describe how based on traditions in Chinese literary history, comparatists constructed a system of theoretical frameworks and methods. They argue that the Chinese School should not be criticized as "Chinacentric" just for the fact that its practitioners perform Chinese-Western comparative studies within its own historical and cultural context. Further, they defend the Chinese School by examining the achievements it has made in comparative poetics and the study of reception …

About English-Language Scholarship On Humor In Ancient Chinese Literature, Peina Zhuang, Lei Cheng

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "About English-language Scholarship on Humor in Ancient Chinese Literature" Peina Zhuang and Lei Cheng present an overview of scholarship by English-language Sinologists on humor. Zhuang and Cheng argue that while English-language scholars have played a path-breaking role in making prominent an important aspect of ancient Chinese literature, their studies also display weaknesses including questionable choices of source material, decontextualized analysis, or even mistranslation. They posit that the study of humor in ancient Chinese literature ought to be performed in a contextual perspective including linguistics, literary history, society, politics, etc.

Identifying High School Physical Education Physical Activity Patterns After High School, David Barney, Francis Pleban Dr., Carol Wilkinson, Keven A. Prusak

Faculty Publications

National standards for physical education (PE) encompass five principles for the purpose of defining what high school students should recognize and be able to perform as a result of a quality PE program. The expectation is that youth will develop as active healthy lifestyle into adulthood from activities and skills taught in PE. Researchers from the United Kingdom and the United States have identified team sports as the primary curricular design in high school P.E. However, it has been suggested the use of team sports is not as effective way to encourage students to be physically active throughout their lives. …

Agriculture Teachers’ Use Of Interactive Whiteboards (Iwbs): Teachers’ Perceptions Of Innovativeness And Technology Integration, J. C. Bunch, J. Shane Robinson, M. Craig Edwards

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

The purpose of this descriptive-correlational study was to assess the level of innovativeness of Oklahoma secondary agricultural education teachers regarding their use of the interactive whiteboard (IWB). The study also sought to determine if relationships existed between teachers’ IWB innovativeness scores and selected personal and professional characteristics. The findings of this study revealed that as a teacher’s age and years of teaching experience increased, his or her perceived level of innovativeness regarding use of interactive whiteboards (IWBs) decreased. Therefore, younger and less experienced teachers were further advanced in Rogers’s (2003) innovation-decision process. In addition, this study found that a majority …

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

In a world where knowledge is a click away, today’s students need information delivered in ways that meet their expectations as digital natives. Serious digital games are one way to meet the demand. This particularistic case study sought to understand agriculture teachers’ experiences using a serious digital game in an introductory animal science course. Three themes emerged from the data collected: 1) the real-world context provided by the game; 2) the game’s potential to promote students’ agricultural awareness; and 3) teachers’ positioning of the game as a secondary teaching approach. Based on these findings, it can be recommended that professional …

Tests of moderation by gender and race indicated minimal differences in change patterns between groups; however, …

Informal, Non(-)Formal, Or Free-Choice Education And Learning? Toward A Common Terminology For Agriscience And Ag-Stem Educators, Kathryn A. Stofer Feb 2015

Informal, Non(-)Formal, Or Free-Choice Education And Learning? Toward A Common Terminology For Agriscience And Ag-Stem Educators, Kathryn A. Stofer

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Education professionals must re-examine the use of labels for education and learning in diverse settings in light of new understandings of how people learn and updated goals for broader interdisciplinary work. The varied use of the terms informal education, nonformal education, and formal education draw distinctions that serve to divide, not unite, those working to support a wide variety of learners for similar agriscience education goals. What in Extension education is nonformal learning is informal learning in science education. Juxtaposing informal learning or nonformal learning with formal learning also serves, in the eyes of some outside the profession, to devalue …
