The Use Of Joint Ventures To Accomplish Aboriginal Economic Development: Two Examples From British Columbia, Jeremy Boyd, Ronald Trosper
Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)
“Aboriginal economic development” differs from other forms of development by emphasizing aboriginal values and community involvement. Joint ventures, while providing business advantages, may not be able to contribute to aboriginal economic development. This paper examines two joint ventures in the interior of British Columbia to examine their ability or inability to contribute the extra dimensions of development desired by aboriginal communities. The AED framework examines business structure; profitability; employment; aboriginal capacity in education, experience, and finance; preservation of traditional values, culture and language; control of forest management over traditional territory; and community support. Established in the context of unresolved land …

The Impact Of Firm Natural Environment Policy On The Market Orientation To Innovation Relationship In Smes (Interactive Paper), Clay Dibrell, Justin Craig, Eric Hansen
Justin B. Craig
As the natural environment emerges as a strategic issue, conceptual linkages are leading to empirical investigations that examine the antecedents and effects of incorporating the natural environment into firm processes such as market orientation and entrepreneurial behaviors. This project is part of an ongoing research agenda that examines the role of the natural environment in new and growing ventures. Specifically, in this paper, the research questions investigated are: How do small-to-medium sized firms (SMEs) incorporate natural environment issues in relation to the way they present themselves to, and receive information from, their customers and competitors (i.e., market orientation)?; and, How …

Sustainability Through Profitability: The Triple Bottom Line, Connie I. Reimers-Hild
Kimmel Education and Research Center: Presentations and White Papers
Today’s highly competitive, globalized world requires organizations and businesses to think differently about how they are going to stay in business. Businesses can no longer afford to focus on profits as their sole purpose for existence. Organizations must instead think about the “Triple Bottom Line” and its implications for their ability to grow their brand, customer loyalty and profits.

Missouri’S Dirty Dozen: A Report On Some Of The Worst Puppy Mills In Missouri, The Humane Society Of The United States
PUPPY MILL INFORMATION
The purpose of the report is to demonstrate current problems that could be addressed by the passage of Proposition B, which Missouri citizens will vote on in November. Under Proposition B, the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act, many of these dealers’ horrific violations would be backed by stronger enforcement opportunities.
All of the puppy mills on the Dirty Dozen list are licensed by the USDA, the state, or both, according to the most recently available records reviewed by HSUS researchers. Some sell puppies to pet stores and others over the Internet. One thing they have in common is atrocious violations …

The Value Added Intellectual Coefficient - Possible Indicator Of Measurement In The Knowledge Based Economy, Anna Ujwary-Gil
Anna Ujwary-Gil
The purpose of this article is a fundamental re-evaluation of the method of VAICTM, which is very often used by researchers around the world, often in major studies assessing the value added produced mainly in the banking sector and in listed companies. It is questionable whether this method deserves such recognition, and whether it should be used for the general studies of the effectiveness of the use of resources both tangible and intangible in creating value for the company. This critical analysis was then presented in the article.

Ten Good Reasons For Using A Translation Memory, Uwe Muegge
Uwe Muegge
More than 20 years after the first commercial translation memory products became available, surveys indicate that while the vast majority of those surveyed do use a translation memory system, less than 30 percent of translators use this type of tool for every translation project or on a daily basis. Studies of translation memory usage among even the most technically advanced users show that the benefits of using a translation memory - beyond reusing existing translation - are still not well understood.
The Hypocrisy Of The Acquiescence Canon, 2010 SelectedWorks
The Hypocrisy Of The Acquiescence Canon, Blair C. Warner
Blair C Warner
The Court applies the acquiescence canon to infer that an agency or judicial statutory interpretation is correct when followed by Congressional inaction. This Article will argue that this practice is based on a number of faulty assumptions. Moreover, the canon is applied inconsistently and creates perverse incentives for the legislature. The Article will then explore the Court’s guidance to lower courts against deriving similar inferences from the denial of certiorari, a similar form of inaction. Drawing parallels between Congress and the Court, and noting the many reasons why conclusions should not be drawn from apparent inactivity, this Article will conclude …

Dr Deogratias Harorimana
In a bid to promote and develop good customer care service in various sectors of Rwandan economy, a survey was conducted to assess progress and trends on customer service capacity building. Although shortcomings are there, there have been efforts and registered trends across the country on service delivery front. Investment in Capacity Building IS happening in certain sectors but this is unevenly distributed. In 2008 companies had started recognizing the significance of good service and cultivate a good working environment and training. From 2009, there was a decline in investment in capacity building in front office and key service delivery …

A Valuation Of U.S. Not-For-Profit Summer Camps With A Comparison Of Two Members Of The Association Of Hole In The Wall Camps, Kristine N. Staley
CMC Senior Theses
Despite their prevalence throughout the United States, summer camps are rarely considered as businesses or high-functioning not-for-profit entities. This paper explores the camping industry with a focus on not-for-profit camps. It adapts typical not-for-profit efficiency metrics to camps in order to demonstrate that powerful missions are not always enough to keep not-for-profits in operation. The paper examines two members of the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps which serve children with serious and life-threatening illnesses. Ultimately, this paper is a tool for donors to observe how organizational performance is a crucial factor when donating to organizations with similar mission.

The Relationship Between Competitive Balance And Revenue In America's Two Largest Sports Leagues, Matt D. Pautler
CMC Senior Theses
This paper looks at the impact that competitive balance has on team revenues. The hypothesis that this paper is operating under is that higher levels of competitive balance will lead to higher levels of revenue. Two different measures of competitive balance will be used and regressions will be run to investigate whether high levels of the competitive balance measure are associated with high levels of revenue. The results of the data indicated that over all three time horizons (ten year, five year, and two year), high levels of variability in playoff appearances were associated with high revenue for Major League …
Deposit Insurance Coverage, Ownership, And Banks' Risk-Taking In Emerging Markets, 2010 Milken Institute
Deposit Insurance Coverage, Ownership, And Banks' Risk-Taking In Emerging Markets, Apanard P. Angkinand, Clas Wihlborg
Business Faculty Articles and Research
We ask how deposit insurance systems and ownership of banks affect the degree of market discipline on banks' risk-taking. Market discipline is determined by the extent of explicit deposit insurance, as well as by the credibility of non-insurance of groups of depositors and other creditors. Furthermore, market discipline depends on the ownership structure of banks and the responsiveness of bank managers to market incentives. An expected U-shaped relationship between explicit deposit insurance coverage and banks' risk-taking is influenced by country specific institutional factors, including bank ownership. We analyze specifically how government ownership, foreign ownership and shareholder rights affect the disciplinary …
