Background/aim: Abnormal immune response occurs in individuals who have alleles associated with innate and adaptive immune mechanisms that predispose to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase 4 (IRAK-4) involved in the pathway produces cytokines that initiate and maintain inflammation through Toll-like receptors and interleukin-1 receptors on the membranes of innate immune cells are stimulated with antigens. It was aimed to investigate whether IRAK-4 rs3794262 and rs4251481 polymorphisms predispose to IBD and the possible effects of these polymorphisms by examining these gene polymorphisms with the clinic and prognostic parameters of IBD.Material and methods: Real-time PCR technique was used to detect …

Background/aim: This study aimed to reveal the optimum recording time of routine electroencephalogram (EEG) for adults with epilepsy.Materials and methods: In this clinical observational study we investigated features of paroxysms that emerged in EEGs recorded for 45 min in adults with epilepsy. Results: Paroxysms were detected in 38.14% of 97 patients. The probability of occurrence of paroxysm during the first 10 min was found to be statistically significantly low in comparison to the first 30 and 45 min (respectively P = 0.004, P = 0.0001). This probability was found to increase insignificantly when comparing the first 20 min with the first …

Background/aim: Cardiac surgery, especially in the presence of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), is associated with an inflammatory reaction that may promote microcirculatory alterations, in addition to the general impact on system hemodynamics. Anemia and transfusion make patients more susceptible to the deleterious effects of CPB. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the effect of dilutional anemia, which is caused by CPB and can be treated with 1?2 units of red blood cell (RBC) transfusion, on global tissue oxygenation parameters in cardiac surgery patients.Materials and methods: This prospective observational study comprised 127 patients who had a relatively stable operation period …

Background/aim: Losartan, an antihypertensive drug, is highly preferred in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypertension because of its retarding effect on diabetic nephropathy. In this study, we investigated the potential therapeutic effect of different doses of losartan on hepatic damage in a streptozotocin (STZ, 50 mg/kg)-induced DM model in rats.Materials and methods: In this study, five different groups were formed: control, DM, low-dose losartan (5 mg/kg), mid-dose losartan (20 mg/kg), and high-dose losartan (80 mg/kg). Liver tissues of experimental groups were evaluated immunohistochemically for TUNEL, iNOS, eNOS, VEGF, and NF-?B pathways. In addition to immunohistochemical analysis, analyses of SOD …

Background/aim: It was aimed to evaluate the results of Rose Bengal (RB), ELISA total tests (IgM and IgG), and the Brucella Coombs gel test (BCGT), which are used as screening tests, with the combined results of a tube agglutination test (standard Wright test: SWT) and a tube agglutination test with antihuman globulin (AHG TAT). Materials and methods: Samples from 97 patients prediagnosed with brucellosis (age ≥18 years) were screened with RB, ELISA, and BCGT. SWT < 160 samples and RB-negative but ELISA- or BCGT-positive samples were tested by AHG TAT. SWT ≥ 160 or AHG TAT ≥ 160 was taken as reference. Results: Thirty-two of 56 RB-positive samples and one RB-negative but ELISA- and BCGT-positive sample were found to be ≥160 with SWT or AHG TAT. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and agreement (kappa) values according to SWT ≥ 160 or AHG TAT ≥ 160 positivity were as follows, respectively: RB 96.9%, 62.5%, 74.2%, and 0.509; ELISA total 100%, 60.9%, 74.2%, and 0.515; BCGT test 97%, 70.3%, 79.4%, and 0.594. Conclusion: Sensitivities of the screening tests are similar, but positivities should be confirmed by more specific tests. Positive samples from screening tests should be tested with AHG if the SWT value is

Background/aim: This study evaluated the usefulness of measuring the atlantodental interval (ADI) and lateral atlantodental spaces (LADSs) by retrospectively analyzing the imaging data of children of various ages with and without atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation (AARS). Materials and methods: The data of 495 children who underwent cranial computed tomography were collected. Among these children, 255 children were clinically diagnosed with AARS while 240 children were not. ADI and LADS values were measured. Results: The difference in mean ADI between children with and without AARS in all age groups was statistically signi cant (t-test, all P < 0.05). In children without AARS, the 95% reference range for ADI was <3.2 mm. e di erence in the variance of bilateral lateral atlantodental spaces (VBLADSs) between children with and without AARS in all age groups was statistically signi cant (rank-sum test, all P < 0.05), with a 95% reference range of 0?2.20 mm (D-test). Conclusion: The ADI is a well-known and frequently used parameter and is not new, but there is little research about this in China and here we con rm its application in Chinese children. e LADS is not a frequently used parameter, but it does not signi cantly di er. e VBLADS parameter is new and signi cant in this manuscript. We concluded that VBLADSs of >2.2 mm are useful indicators for …

Background/aim: Nucleostemin is a nuclear protein that maintains stem cell features and plays a role as a cell proliferation marker. It also participates in cell cycle regulation by interfering with other intracellular proteins. Recent reports have indicated that this protein plays a role in ribosomal biogenesis and genome protection. High expression level of nucleostemin has been reported in some cancer patients. However, the importance of nucleostemin in gastric cancer needs to be addressed. The aim of this study was to investigate nucleostemin expression in gastric cancer and the effects of this expression on prognosis. Materials and methods: Nucleostemin expression was …

This research sought to investigate the impact of HIV infection, as well as other established preoperative risk factors for poor perioperative renal outcome (PPRO), in a population of 565,225 adult noncardiac surgery patients whose data were obtained from the 2009-2011 California State Inpatient Database. Materials and methods: HIV status, established preoperative risk factors, and the study outcome (PPRO) were determined with the Clinical Classification Software codes recorded for each patient. Data were analyzed using univariate (Mann-Whitney U test, chi-square, and Fisher′s exact test) and multivariate (binary logistic …

Background/aim: The localization of the standard posterior portal of shoulder arthroscopy and landmarks mentioned in the literature are unclear. The purpose of this prospective cadaveric study was to determine the localization of the standard posterior portal and its distance to the neural structures. Materials and methods: One fresh frozen and 10 formalin-fixed adult cadaveric shoulders were dissected. In the beach chair position, a 5-mm trocar was placed anteroposteriorly from the superior edge of the subscapularis muscle, superior to the tip of the coracoid process and tangent to the glenoid. The relevant distances of the posterior exit point were measured. Results: …

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic utility of the ultrasonographic ratio of median nerve cross-sectional area (m-CSA) to ulnar nerve cross-sectional area (u-CSA), the m-CSA/u-CSA ratio, in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Materials and methods: Fifty patients with positive symptoms and electromyography results of CTS and 50 healthy matched control subjects were evaluated. Ultrasonographic m-CSA and u-CSA measurements of each participant were made at the level of the pisiform bone and the m-CSA/u-CSA ratio was calculated. Results: Using the m-CSA cut-off value of 11.95 mm2 showed a sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 80% while …
