Btla (C272) Expression On Cd4+ T Cells In Behçet Patients, Nafi̇ye Fulya İlhan, Nesri̇n Demi̇r, Tamer Demi̇r, Ahmet Gödekmerdan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To investigate the peripheral blood levels of B and T lymphocyte attenuator (BTLA/CD272) on T cells and its role in Behçet disease (BD), and to define the role of inhibitory receptors on BD. Materials and methods: Included in this study were 25 patients with BD and 20 healthy control subjects, matched for age and sex. Results: CD4+CD272+ (P < 0.001) and CD3+CD272+ (P < 0.001) T cell levels were significantly higher in BD patients (active and remission) compared to the healthy controls. However, there was no difference between the active patients and those in remission in terms of CD4+CD272+ T cells, while CD3+CD272+ T cell levels were significantly higher in active-phase BD patients compared to patients in the remission phase (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Further functional studies could be implemented to investigate the effectiveness of the present research parameter in the diagnosis or follow-up of certain diseases similar to BD and with obscure etiology, as well as its contribution to immune dysregulation of BD. BTLA can additionally modulate T cell response in BD on different inflammatory areas and it can be upregulated in BD because of T cell activation. The results of the present study indicate that BTLA expression on CD4+ Th (T helper) cells might play a limiting role on the inflammation at peripheral sites or organs in BD.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The purpose of this study was to evaluate cardiopulmonary responses of individuals with different fitness levels according to predetermined rating of perceived exertion (RPE) scores and to investigate the correspondence between the heart rate reserve percentage (HRR%) and the RPE scale by using fit and unfit subjects. Materials and methods: RPE scores of sedentary volunteers were recorded at different HRR% levels during graded exercise tests on a cycle ergometer. Following the tests, subjects were divided into 2 groups, high metabolic equivalent [(MET) MET >= 10; n = 9] and low MET (MET < 10; n = 11), according to maximal O_2 uptakes (VO_{2max}). Participants performed the steady-state exercise test at the 13th-14th level of their perceived exertion 48 h after the first test. Variance and regression analyses were performed. Results: For all HRR% values, RPE levels were not different between groups. During the graded exercise test, perceived exertion was significantly higher in the low MET group than in the high MET group. Predetermined RPE score results were significantly greater in the low MET group with relative O2 consumption as compared to the high MET group (P < 0.05-0.001). Conclusion: In individuals with different VO_{2max} levels, exercise intensity can be prescribed using HRR% or RPE scale methods while adjusting for individual differences in oxygen consumption.

On CHROMagar medium Candida species form different colors; thus, the medium enables the differentiation of these species from each other as well as from other Candida species. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of incubation temperatures, incubation times, and CO_2 on the chromogenic properties of CHROMagar. Materials and methods: A total of 112 strains of Candida spp. were used. A 0.5 McFarland suspension of each strain was inoculated onto CHROMagar with a calibrated loop and incubated at 26 °C and 35 °C for 24-48 h in normal atmosphere and in an atmosphere of 5% CO_2. To evaluate the cephalometric features of patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and to elucidate the relationship between the severity of OSAS and cephalometric and clinical variables. Materials and methods: Ninety-three patients (71M/22W) with OSAS were classified into 3 subgroups according to the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). Various cephalometric and clinical measurements were carried out for all patients. Results: Inferior airway space (IAS), maximum soft palate thickness (MSPT), SNGoGn°, and distance of hyoid bone to mandibular plane (Hy-MPPerp) were found to be higher in severe OSAS for both sexes. Middle airway space, IAS, MSPT, and Hy-MPPerp were correlated positively with …
