Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Embolus shedding is one of the important complications in carotid artery stenting (CAS). Carotid high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI) is often used to directly reflect important biological characteristics, such as plaque size and composition, as well as the structure of the carotid artery wall. The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive values of carotid HR-MRI for large embolus shedding in CAS. Materials and methods: In total, 195 patients with carotid stenosis were enrolled. Preoperative carotid HR-MRI was performed to define the nature of the carotid plaques. CAS was performed in all patients, and intraoperative embolic protection …

Hidden Threat In Familial Mediterranean Fever: Subclinical Inflammation, Oxidative Stress And Their Relationship With Vitamin D Status, Mhd Boshr Alesh, Di̇dem Barlak Keti̇, Ayşenur Paç Kisaarslan, Sabahatti̇n Muhtaroğlu, Sema Nur Taşkin Jan 2022

Hidden Threat In Familial Mediterranean Fever: Subclinical Inflammation, Oxidative Stress And Their Relationship With Vitamin D Status, Mhd Boshr Alesh, Di̇dem Barlak Keti̇, Ayşenur Paç Kisaarslan, Sabahatti̇n Muhtaroğlu, Sema Nur Taşkin

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Vitamin D levels have been investigated in children with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), but the relationship between vitamin D status and inflammation/oxidative stress indicators could not be clearly demonstrated. This study aimed to investi- gate the relationship between subclinical inflammation/oxidative stress and vitamin D status in children with FMF during an attack-free period. Materials and methods: In the cross-sectional study, ninety children with FMF in the attack-free period and 30 healthy children were included. Patients were grouped according to their vitamin D status (< 20, 20-29, and 30-100 ng/mL). The groups were compared in terms of pentraxin 3 (PTX-3), total oxidant status (TOS), and total antioxidant status (TAS). Multivariable linear regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with vitamin D status. Results: PTX-3 levels were significantly higher in patients with vitamin D insufficiency (20-29 ng/mL) than in the group with vitamin D sufficient (30-100 ng/mL). Patients with vitamin D deficiency (< 20 ng/mL) had higher TOS. A strong negative correlation was ob- served between vitamin D levels and TOS (p = 0.003). Subclinical inflammation (PTX-3 ≥ 0.640) and high TOS levels were negatively associated with vitamin D levels. Conclusion: Subclinical inflammation and oxidative stress were negatively associated with vitamin D levels in patients with FMF dur- ing an attack-free period. Sufficient vitamin D levels are important in fighting subclinical inflammation and oxidative stress in children with FMF.

Materials and methods: All subjects participated in an out-patient PR of 6 weeks and 3 sessions per week prospectively. Dyspnea severity, the disease-specific quality of life (St. Georges Respiratory Questionnaire-SGRQ), pulmonary function tests (PFT), exercise capacity, the dt at the end of the expiration …

Nonscarring Scalp Alopecia: Which Laboratory Analysis Should We Perform On Whom?, Ümran Öner, Necmetti̇n Akdeni̇z

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Vitamins and minerals are thought to play an essential but not entirely clear role in developing, preventing, and treating nonscarring alopecia. Telogen effluvium, androgenetic alopecia, and alopecia areata are the most common forms of nonscarring alopecias. We would like to present a different perspective on laboratory abnormalities in patients with nonscarring alopecia. Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is an endocrine disorder characterized by hypercalcemia caused by excessive parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion from the parathyroid gland. PHPT was previously shown to increase cardiac arrhythmias. Besides, new indices, such as the Tpeak-Tend (Tp-e) interval, Tp-e interval/QT interval (Tp-e/QT) ratio, and Tp-e interval/corrected QT interval (Tp-e/QTc) ratio may be associated with ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relationship between PHPT and the changes to Tp-e interval, Tp-e/QT ratio, and Tp-e/QTc ratio. Materials and methods: We carried out the study with 41 patients with PHPT and 40 control subjects. We calculated …

Turkey's Transition To Face-To-Face Schooling During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Mahmut Özer, Hayri̇ Eren Suna, Matjaz Perc, Sadri̇ Şensoy, Sevi̇l Uygun İli̇khan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The COVID-19 pandemic majorly disrupted conventional schooling and many countries maintained educational services through distance education. The duration of school closures in Turkey was longer than most OECD countries, thus Turkey prioritized school reopenings in the 2021-2022 academic year to mitigate possible negative outcomes of closures. Here we study the compatibility of implications for school reopenings in Turkey with these practices and assess the first semester of face-to-face schooling. Materials and methods: We have used document analysis to present and compare the practices in Turkey with international practices. We also used a comparative approach to assess the coherence between …
