Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: The Cancer Fatigue Scale (CFS) was developed to evaluate the severity of fatigue in patients with breast cancer. The aim of this study is to translate and culturally adapt a Turkish version and investigate the validity and reliability of the CFS in Turkish patients with fatigue symptoms. Materials and methods: Eighty participants completed the Turkish version of the CFS for breast cancer and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Core Questionnaire ″Core 30″ (EORTC QLQ-C30). Test-retest reliability was evaluated by repeating the CFS with a 7-day interval. Results: The CFS demonstrated high test-retest …

Background/aim: We performed this prospective randomized double-blind study to compare the effects of nefopam versus ketorolac in intravenous fentanyl-based patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) after shoulder arthroscopic orthopedic surgery. Materials and methods: Ninety-two patients were randomly divided into two groups to receive intravenous PCA. Patients were assigned to either the nefopam group (nefopam 120 mg and fentanyl 20 µg/kg) or the ketorolac group (ketorolac 2 mg/kg and fentanyl 20 µg/kg). Pain was assessed on a visual analogue scale (VAS) and a numeric rating scale (NRS). Additionally, patient satisfaction, adverse events, and vital signs were monitored. Results: There were no significant differences in …

In Vivo Attenuation Of Angiogenesis In Hepatocellular Carcinoma By Nigella Sativa, Moustafa Fathy, Toshio Nikaido
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Angiogenesis is imperative in malignant tumor growth. Hepatocellular carcinoma is a typical hypervascular tumor that relies on angiogenesis. The aim of this study is to investigate the in vivo molecular mechanism underlying the antitumor properties of Nigella sativa ethanolic extract (NSEE) through its antiangiogenic effect against diethyl nitrosamine (DENA)-induced hepatocarcinogenesis. Materials and methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: normal, NSEE, DENA, and NSEE-DENA groups. Final body weight, hepatosomatic indices, serum AFP, serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels, and liver tissue hepatocyte growth factor ß (HGFß) protein expression were estimated. Liver sections were stained for histological …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Myoglobin, cardiac troponin T, B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), and creatine kinase isoenzyme MB (CK-MB) are frequently used biomarkers for evaluating risk of patients admitted to an emergency department with chest pain. Recently, time- dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis has been used to evaluate the predictive power of biomarkers where disease status can change over time. We aimed to determine the best set of biomarkers that estimate cardiac death during follow-up time. We also obtained optimal cut-o values of these biomarkers, which di erentiates between patients with and without risk of death. A web tool was developed to estimate …

The Impact Of Visit-To-Visit Systolic Blood Pressure Variability On Residual Renal Function And Left Ventricular Hypertrophy In Peritoneal Dialysis Patients, Jun Ping Tian, Hong Wang, Xin Kui Tian, Feng He Du, Tao Wang
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Blood pressure (BP) variability is more closely associated with adverse outcomes than 'usual' BP in the general population. Residual renal function (RRF) and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) are thought to be predictors of poor outcome in dialysis patients. However, only a few studies have focused on BP variation and its link to RRF, LVH, and outcome in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. therefore, we aimed to explore the e ect of visit-to-visit BP variability on RRF and LVH in continuous ambulatory PD (CAPD) patients. Materials and methods: We performed an observational study that included all prevalent PD patients between 1 …

Effect Of Mometasone Furoate Nasal Spray On The Dna Of Nasal Mucosal Cells, Hakan Akkaş, Erdi̇nç Aydin, Seda Türkoğlu Babakurban, Erkan Yurtcu, Özlem Yilmaz Özbek
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a respiratory disease caused by in ammation of the nasal mucosa. Intranasal corticosteroids (ICs) are an e ective treatment for AR; however, their use has been associated with atrophy in nasal mucosae. Because DNA damage has been linked to several chronic diseases, we hypothesize that use of ICs could cause DNA damage in nasal mucosa cells, leading to mucosal atrophy and septal perforation. Materials and methods: Sixty patients with moderate or severe AR were divided randomly into two groups. Mometasone furoate (MF) and antihistamine tablets (desloratadine) were given to the study (IC) group. Physiologic saline …

Background/aim: This study was designed to examine the effect of tadalafil, a phosphodiesterase (PDE)5 inhibitor, on the severity of joint and muscle damage in rats with adjuvant-induced arthritis (AA). Materials and methods: AA was induced by intradermal inoculation into right hind paw of male Sprague Dawley rats (300-450g) with complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA; 0.1 mL). AA rats were treated with either tadalafil (10 mg/kg; per oral) alone or along with the soluble guanylyl cyclase inhibitor 1H-[1,2,4]oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ; 10 mg/kg; intraperitoneally). After decapitation on day 16, trunk blood was collected for total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) assays. …

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to determine the specific component of Rosmarinus officinalis (RO) responsible for increased flap survival and how RO displays its efficacy. Materials and methods: Rectangular random-pattern flaps were elevated from the back of each rat. Group I was the control group. In group II 0.1 mL of cineole, in group III 0.1 mL of alpha-pinene, in group IV 0.1 mL of camphor, in group V 0.1 mL each of alpha-pinene and cineole, in group VI 0.1 mL each of alpha-pinene and camphor, in group VII 0.1 mL each of cineole and camphor, and in …

Background/aim: Multiple zones of injuries are formed after burns, consisting of a zone of coagulative necrosis, a zone of hyperemia, and a zone of stasis, in which progressive microcirculatory thrombosis leads to degeneration and deepening of the wound. We used an experimental rat comb burn model to test the hypothesis that use of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) may save the zone of stasis. Materials and methods: Adult female rats were randomly divided two groups: the LMWH group (n = 8) rats received subcutaneous LMWH injections, while the saline group (n = 8) rats were injected with the same volume …
