Thalamocortical Network Interruption: A Fresh View For Migraine Symptoms, Hayrunni̇sa Bolay Belen Jan 2020

Thalamocortical Network Interruption: A Fresh View For Migraine Symptoms, Hayrunni̇sa Bolay Belen

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Migraine is a multifaceted brain disorder where multisensory disturbances are associated with headache. Yet sensory symptoms are conventionally justified by dysfunctions confined to the cerebral cortex, a perspective through the complex interplay of thalamocortical network would provide the entire picture, more pertinent to the central sensory processing. It is important to consider thalamus as a hub that integrates multiple domains via extensive connections among anatomically and functionally separate cortical areas. Accordingly, cortical spreading depression (CSD), implicated in migraine pathophysiology can be seen as a tool to disconnect thalamocortical network by functionally eliminating cerebral cortex. Hence, including thalamic reticular nucleus and …

Ankaferd Hemostat: From Molecules To Medicine, Rafi̇ye Çi̇ftçi̇ler, İbrahi̇m Celaletti̇n Haznedaroğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Ankaferd hemostat (ABS; Ankaferd Blood Stopper® , İstanbul, Turkey) is a hemostatic agent having an impact on red blood cell-fibrinogen interactions. The hemostatic effect of ABS depends upon the quick promotion of a protein network, particularly fibrinogen gamma, in relation to the erythrocyte aggregation. The entire physiological process involves ABS-induced formation of the protein network by vital erythrocyte aggregation. Vital erythrocyte aggregation occurs with the spectrine, ankyrin, and actin proteins on the membrane of the red blood cells. ABS notably affects cell metabolism and cell cycle mechanisms. Meanwhile, ABS has antiproliferative effects on cancer cells. The aim of this review …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Tuberculosis is still one of the most contagious diseases around the world. Key factors of tuberculosis control are rapid diagnostic, efficient treatment, and prevention of contamination by surveillance and monitoring. However, culture is the gold standard method for laboratory diagnosis of tuberculosis; the results are several weeks to obtain. In order to prevent contamination of tuberculosis, diagnosis must be made in short time and treatment should be started as soon as possible. The aim of this study is to optimize the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method, which provides a much faster and more sensitive result than the polymerase chain …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: We aimed to reveal the incidence and predictive role of insulin resistance and distorted oral glucose tolerance test in nondiabetic patients with Bell's Palsy (BP). Materials and methods: Eighty-six patients with BP and 28 control subjects; all with normal blood glucose levels and no history of diabetes, were enrolled in the study. We investigated insulin resistance (IR) in all subjects, in terms of HOMA-IR greater than 2.7. Sixtytwo of the patients also underwent an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Results: The mean HOMA-IR value was significantly increased in patients, compared to the control group (3.2 vs 1.6; P < 0.01). IR was detected more in BP patients than in controls (P < 0.05). The patients with higher HOMA-IR values had more severe facial dysfunction at the initial presentation and complete recovery time took longer than the patients with normal HOMA-IR value (75 days vs 42 days; P < 0.05). Following a 2h-OGTT, impaired glucose tolerance and newly diagnosed DM were found in 60% of the patients. Recovery time was significantly longer in prediabetics and newly diagnosed diabetic patients than in patients with normal glycemia (68 days, 52 days, and 32 days, respectively; P < 0.01). Conclusion: There is a strong linkage between HOMA-IR value and BP prognosis so HOMA-IR value may have a significant role of predicting BP prognosis at presentation.
