Prediction Of Neurological Outcome Using Bispectral Index In Patients With Severe Acute Brain Injury, Wang Xifeng, Zhang Lianshuang, Wu Dawei
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
To predict consciousness recovery and outcome of patients with severe acute brain injury using the bispectral index (BIS). Materials and methods: A prospective study of 189 brain-injured patients was made when they were without sedatives for at least 24 h. BIS, 95% spectral edge frequency (SEF), burst suppression ratio (SR), total power (TP), spontaneous electromyographic activity (EMG), and signal quality index (SQI) were recorded continuously for 30 min. Neurologic conditions were measured with the Glasgow Coma Score (GCSBIS) when recording BIS. Patients were followed for 30 days after injury to assess consciousness recovery and outcome. Results: There were statistically significant …

Mad honey (grayanotoxin, GTX) poisoning is caused by a toxin binding to the sodium channels of a cell membrane. This study investigates the dose-dependent effect of GTX on the cardiovascular system. Materials and methods: Twenty-four male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into 4 equal groups. Group 1 was the control group and was administered only saline. GTX-III was administered in doses of 200, 400, and 800 µg/kg for Groups 2, 3, and 4, respectively. After GTX-III injection, blood pressure and heart rate were recorded using an electrophysiological data acquisition system. Results: After 200 µg/kg GTX-III injection, at 31-60 min, the …

Reopening sternotomy to control bleeding after coronary artery bypass grafting surgery (CABG) has been reported in 2%-7% of cases. Platelet dysfunction and activation of fibrinolytic cascade are the common causes of bleeding after on-pump CABG. Different antifibrinolytic drugs have been used to reduce bleeding. In this study, we aimed to investigate the efficacy of topical tranexamic acid in reducing postoperative mediastinal bleeding after CABG. Materials and methods: This was a double-blind placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial on 40 patients as the control and another 40 patients as the study group. On completion of CABG before sternotomy wound closure, tranexamic acid (2 …

Vitamin D level could be related to blood pressure and cardiovascular health. However, the direct suppressor effect of vitamin D on vascular contraction has not yet been explored. Therefore, the effects of alfacalcidol (1\alpha-hydroxyvitamin D_3) and calcitriol (1\alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D_3) on contractions induced by phenylephrine (10^{-8} to 10^{-5} M) in mice aorta were investigated. Materials and methods: Arterial rings were suspended in isolated organ chambers filled with Krebs bicarbonate solution gassed with 95% O_2 and 5% CO_2 maintained at 37 °C. Tissue responses were recorded isometrically with a force transducer and displayed on an acquisition system. Alfacalcidol and calcitriol were applied …

Impact Of Acute Sleep Deprivation On Aortic Elastic Properties In Healthy Workers, İlyas Akdemi̇r, Gökhan Altunbaş, Süleyman Ercan, Selve Arslan, Vedat Davutoğlu
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
People are more frequently exposed to acute sleep loss nowadays due to extensive working. Epidemiologic studies suggest that sleep deprivation (SD) increases the risk of cardiovascular events. Aortic stiffness is also shown to predict cardiovascular events, stroke, and death even in healthy populations. The association between SD and aortic stiffness remains unknown. We sought to determine the impact of acute SD on aortic elastic properties in healthy workers. Materials and methods: The study population consisted of 34 healthy medical personnel working in shifts (17 men and 17 women). Less than half of the mean daily sleep time, or less than …
