We aimed to assess the association between retinal vascular caliber (RVC) scores and disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients.Materials and methods: Forty-seven RA patients, 32 systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients, and 45 healthy people were enrolled. RA and SLE patients were subdivided into groups according to C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. RA patients were also grouped according to Disease Activity Score-28 (DAS-28). Fundus photography was performed for all patients. RVC was summarized as the central retinal artery and vein equivalents (CRAE and CRVE).Results: Mean CRVE for RA patients was 213.3 ± 17.8 µm compared with 209.2 ± 14.1 µm for …

Differentiation Between Intestinal Behçet's Disease And Crohn's Disease Based On Endoscopy, Jing Fen Ye, Jian Long Guan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Differentiating intestinal Behçet's disease (BD) from Crohn's disease (CD) is highly challenging, as they often mimic each other in terms of clinical manifestations. Endoscopy is an important modality for distinguishing bowel lesions. The study was designed to identify clinical manifestations that are easily confused and to evaluate the efficacy of endoscopy for distinguishing intestinal BD from CD by several overlapping signs.Materials and methods: The data from 111 patients with intestinal BD and 81 patients with CD were retrospectively analyzed. Logistic regression was applied to establish a prediction model based on endoscopic findings for the differential diagnosis. The diagnostic efficacy of …

Current Perspectives For The Treatment Of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, Eli̇fcan Aladağ Karakulak, İbrahi̇m Celaletti̇n Haznedaroğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

With an annual incidence of 1-2 in a million, Ph*(+) chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a clonal hematopoietic stem cell disease that makes myeloid neoplastic cells breed out of control. This BCR-ABL(+) myeloproliferative disease makes up about 15%-20% of all leukemia cases in adults. CML is seen more in males than females, with a rate of three to two. However, it does not show differences in prevalence in terms of age. CML consists of three clinical phases. The first one is the chronic phase, defined by rising white blood cell levels and also by myeloid proliferation and bone marrow maturation. …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Lead can cause morphological and functional changes in heart, and inflammation and endothelial dysfunction in vasculature. Endocan, as a novel indicator of endothelial dysfunction, has been used for cardiovascular diseases. This study investigated the relationship between lead exposure, endocan levels, and diastolic functions.Materials and methods: A total of 51 lead-exposed workers without a known cardiovascular disease or risk factors and 54 healthy controls were enrolled. All participants underwent transthoracic echocardiography. Blood lead and serum endocan levels were analyzed. Results: Baseline demographic and clinical characteristics were found to be similar between groups. Median blood lead (32 vs 1.5 µg/dL, P < 0.001) and serum endocan levels (67 vs 57.1 pg/mL, P = 0.02) were significantly higher in the lead-exposed group. Serum endocan level showed a positive correlation with blood lead levels (r = 0.404, P = 0.003) in lead-exposed workers. Serum endocan level was an independent risk factor for increased E/E' ratio (ß = 0.704, P = 0.002) and left atrial volume index (ß = 1.158, P = 0.011) and higher level of lead in blood was an independent risk factor for increased E wave (ß = 8.004, P = 0.022) in lead-exposed workers. Conclusion: Worsened diastolic functions may be seen in the course of lead exposure. Due to sharing a similar mechanism, a higher serum level of endocan may be a valuable laboratory clue for impaired diastolic function in this population.

Validity And Reliability Of The Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety And Information Scale In The Turkish Population, Funda Çeti̇nkaya, Esi̇n Kavuran, Kevser Sevgi̇ Ünal Aslan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

This study aimed to adapt the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) to measure the preoperative anxiety of adult Turkish patients undergoing surgery.Materials and methods: The sample of this methodological study included 210 patients. Data were collected by using personal information forms, the APAIS, and the State Anxiety Scale (STAI). Cronbach's ∝-coefficient was calculated, and test-retest reliability was tested. Results: Cronbach's ∝-coefficients of the APAIS anxiety and information requirement subscales were 0.897 and 0.786, respectively. The mean test and retest scores of the APAIS were not different. The test and retest scores of the patients were significantly, positively, and …

In this study, our aim was to investigate the neutrophil/lymphocyte (N/L) ratio, variations in leukocytes and leukocyte subtypes, and the relationship between N/L ratio and insulin resistance (IR) in obesity.Materials and methods: Ninety-six patients and 40 healthy controls were included in this study. Patients' blood glucose levels, insulin levels, and hemogram parameters upon 8 h of fasting were determined. Body mass index (BMI) and Homeostasis Model Assessment-Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) values were calculated. Results: Neutrophil numbers were found to be higher among obese patients with IR than among non-IR obese patients. The N/L ratio was, moreover, found to be higher among obese …

Does Chest Compression During Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Provide Sufficient Cerebral Oxygenation?, Mehmet Aki̇f Yazar, Mehmet Bariş Açikgöz, Adnan Bayram

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Some of the patients suffering from cardiac arrest (CA) remain in a chronic unconscious state in intensive care units (ICUs). The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of chest compression (CC) on cerebral oxygenation during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). As a secondary goal, we attempted to determine the effects of regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2) values on consciousness and the survival rate using the Full Outline of Unresponsiveness (FOUR) scoring method.Materials and methods: This observational preliminary study was carried out with 20 patients with CA who were hospitalized in ICUs. The rSO2 values measured by near-infrared …

Background/aim: Based on our previous in vitro study with multilamellar liposomal bupivacaine (MLB) versus bupivacaine alone in artificial cerebrospinal fluid, we aimed to investigate in vivo antinociceptive effect of intrathecal MLB by determining tail flick latency (TFL) time after thermal stimulation in rats. Materials and methods: After preparing MLB and high-yield drug entrapment in liposome (HYDEL) bupivacaine, 18 female Wistar rats were assigned to 3 groups as control (bupivacaine) and study groups (MLB and HYDEL bupivacaine) including 6 rats in each group to administer these drugs intrathecally. Antinociceptive activity was determined in terms of TFL time after thermal stimulation. Maximum …
