Tire-Pavement Interaction Modeling: Hyperelastic Tire And Elastic Pavement, Jaime Hernandez, Imad L. Al-Qadi

The interaction between deformable tire and pavement was studied using the validated finite element model; the full understanding of tire–pavement contact has implications for pavement damage prediction and pavement life-cycle assessment (fuel consumption estimation). The tire’s rubber and reinforcement were considered hyperelastic and linear elastic, respectively, with material constants obtained from the tire manufacturer (rubber) and laboratory testing (reinforcement). On the other hand, the pavement was assumed linear elastic supported by linear elastic springs. Calculation of truck tires rolling resistance, using the finite element method and considering variables such as incompressible visco-hyperelastic rubber materials, accurate tire geometry and steady temperature distribution, is presented. The model was validated using experimentally measured contact area and contact stresses. Rolling resistance was calculated for three values of axle load, tire inflation pressure, temperature and speed. In addition, regression analysis was used to propose a mathematical expression for predicting rolling resistance as a function of the considered variables. The structural and magnetic properties of copper (Cu) and aluminum (Al) -incorporated chromium oxide (α-Cr2O3, i.e., chromia) inverted core-shell nanoparticles (CSNs) were investigated. The objectives of this study were to determine the role of the substituting (for chromium, Cr) element and of Cu concentration on governing the magnetic properties of the CSNs. For synthesis of the CSNs, α-Cr2O3 nanoparticles were first grown using microwave assisted synthesis whereupon a hydrothermal nanophase epitaxy (HNE) method was used to incorporate Cu or Al in the chromia-based shell of the nanoparticles. Currently, there has been a flurry of research focused on multiferroic materials due to their potential applications. Lead (Pb)-based ferroelectric and multiferroic materials (PZT, PMN-PT, PZN-PT etc.) have been widely used for sensors, actuators, and electro-mechanical applications due to their excellent dielectric and piezoelectric properties. However, these materials are facing global restriction due to the toxicity of Pb. “Am241 is typically produced via Pu241 decay in a uranium fueled reactor. Presence of Am241 can be used as the age estimation tool for spent fuel, which is a focus of this thesis along with the interest of the measurement and the ratio of production rates of Am241’s activation products; Americium-242 and its first excited state of Americium-242m. MCNP models of the core and BEGe 3825 detector were built. These models were compared with established and physical measurements of gamma/x-ray standards that were available at the reactor. "Lead is known to cause health problems in humans, especially children, and an effective in‐situ remediation option has been sought for years. Adding phosphoric acid (PA) to contaminated soil causes a reaction that binds the lead to phosphate to produce pyromorphite (Pb₅(PO₄)₃Cl), a form of lead believed to be non‐bioavailable; however, field trials have given varied results (Bosso et al 2008; Munksgaard and Lottermoser 2011; Tang et al. 2009). "Groundwater elevation interpolation is necessary for the prediction of groundwater flow direction and contaminant transport. Kriging is a geostatistical tool commonly used to interpolate groundwater elevation. Kriging requires a relatively large number of monitoring wells at the site of interest. The variogram model is a crucial element to the kriging equations. The variogram modelling process is an iterative procedure that is often very time consuming.
