A growing population along with developing nations are increasing the demand for energy. The International Energy Agency forecasts a global electricity demand increase of 70 percent by 2040. This is an increase from nearly 18 TW to over 30 TW. The sun can be a great clean source of achieving this energy demand. Despite the large solar industry development, the market is still growing as solar energy only accounted for 0.87% of the global energy production in 2013. The opportunity exists to manufacture more affordable solar energy that can penetrate more of the global energy market. In this dissertation, a …

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper presents an optimal control-based inverse method used to determine the distribution of the electrodes for the electroosmotic micromixers with external driven flow from the inlet. Based on the optimal control method, one Dirichlet boundary control problem is constructed to inversely find the optimal distribution of the electrodes on the sidewalls of electroosmotic micromixers and achieve the acceptable mixing performance. After solving the boundary control problem, results are also provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method; the step-shaped distribution of the external electric potential imposed on the sidewalls is obtained, and the electrodes with an interlaced arrangement …

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Guided-mode resonant (GMR) technology is incorporated into lossy dielectric materials to assist in the absorption of incident light for various applications. Varying topologies and methodologies are explored. A series of devices taking advantage of narrow band, coherent interferometry is found to work as a serviceable coherent perfect absorber (CPA) whereby the total transmittance through the device is tunable based upon the relative phase of two or more beams. The differing beams are shown to be exciting the same mode in the device enabling the interferometric function. A similar, active topology for use in electronically interrogable interfacing is explored. Multiple hybrid …

Adaptive Optimal Tracking Of Uncertain Discrete-Time Systems, Bahare Kiumarsi Khomartash
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Optimal feedback control design has been responsible for much of the successful performance of engineered systems in aerospace, manufacturing, industrial processes, vehicles, ships, robotics, and elsewhere. Although most control design methods concern only about the stability of the controlled systems, the stability is a bare minimum requirement and it is desired to design a controller by optimizing some predefined performance criteria. However, the classical optimal control methods rely on offline solutions to complicated Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations which require complete knowledge about the system dynamics. Therefore, they are not able to cope with uncertainties and changes in dynamics. This research presents …

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is an environmentally friendly technology capable of forming coatings with excellent adhesion strength at high deposition rates. The PEO process is particularly attractive for forming desirable oxide-based coatings in transition metals (Al, Ti, Mg) to improve their surface sensitive properties. At present, the PEO mechanism is not fully understood since the process includes complex processes that are difficult to study. However, understanding the PEO mechanism is essential to produce coatings with desirable characteristics for a variety of new applications. One critical PEO process parameter is the applied total current to the workpiece. The total applied current …

Architecture, engineering, construction and facility management (AEC-FM) projects involve a large number of participants that must exchange information and combine their knowledge for successful completion of a project. Currently, most of the AEC-FM domains store their information about a project in text documents or use XML, relational, or object-oriented formats that make information integration difficult. The AEC-FM industry is not taking advantage of the full potential of the Semantic Web for streamlining sharing, connecting, and combining information from different domains. The Semantic Web is designed to solve the information integration problem by creating a web of structured and connected data …

Study Of Iron Ion Transit Through Three-Fold Channel Of Ferritin Cage, Shah Alam Limon
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Ferritin is an iron-storage globular protein with an ability to uptake, mineralize and release iron ions in a controllable manner. The globular hollow shell allows storage of mineralized iron, with several channels responsible for the transit of ions into the shell and out of it. Understanding of the detailed molecular functioning of ferritin is required for rational design of biomimetic conjugate nano-biosystems containing ferritin-like constituents. In this work, ferritin was investigated both numerically by all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and experimentally by Raman spectroscopy. Molecular dynamic simulations of a model system comprising iron ions (Fe2+) and a ferritin trimer expressing …

Specification Of Mixed Logit Models Using An Optimization Approach, Cristian David Arteaga Sanchez
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Mixed logit models are a widely-used tool for studying discrete outcome problems. Modeling development entails answering three important questions that highly affect the quality of the specification: (i) what variables are considered in the analysis? (ii) what are going to be the coefficients for these variables? and (iii) what density function these coefficients will follow? The literature provides guidance; however, a strong statistical background and an ad hoc search process are required to obtain the best model specification. Knowledge of the problem context and data is required. Given a dataset including discrete outcomes and associated characteristics the problem to be …

Optimization Of Prosthetic Hands: Utilizing Modularity To Improve Grip Force, Grasp, And Versatility, Jordan William Harris
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
It has been demonstrated that although many varieties of upper limb prosthetics exist, commercially available prosthetics are outdated and unsatisfactory. Ineffectiveness and limitations have led to some prosthesis wearers having to own multiple devices, whereas others have given up on them entirely. Even though ample research has been conducted to design and test new hand designs, the industry appears to rest in an overall stagnated state.
It was proposed here, that one problem with prosthetic research is an excess of variables involved in testing, and therefore the improper application of the scientific method. It seems that each time a research …
