Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A novel hybrid field-circuit simulation method is proposed for transient heterogeneous electromagnetic simulations. It adopts the discontinuous Galerkin time domain (DGTD) method and behavioral macromodel trained by artificial neural network to analyze the electromagnetic structure and circuit network, respectively. Due to the feature of DGTD method and behavioral macromodel, the proposed method can handle not only electromagnetic structures with complex geometries and materials but also manage circuits with unknown internal details. It provides a new approach that has the trainable accuracy to meet today's IP projection requestions. It is also the first time for DGTD algorithm to work with the …

Laser As A Tool To Study Radiation Effects In Cmos, Bahar Ajdari
Laser As A Tool To Study Radiation Effects In Cmos, Bahar Ajdari
Dissertations and Theses
Energetic particles from cosmic ray or terrestrial sources can strike sensitive areas of CMOS devices and cause soft errors. Understanding the effects of such interactions is crucial as the device technology advances, and chip reliability has become more important than ever. Particle accelerator testing has been the standard method to characterize the sensitivity of chips to single event upsets (SEUs). However, because of their costs and availability limitations, other techniques have been explored. Pulsed laser has been a successful tool for characterization of SEU behavior, but to this day, laser has not been recognized as a comparable method to beam …

Modified membranes for process intensification in biomass hydrolysis
Production of biofuels and chemicals from lignocellulosic biomass is one of the leading candidates for replacement of petroleum based fuels and chemicals. However, conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into fuels and chemicals is not cost effective compared to the production of fuels and chemicals from crude oil reserves. Some novel and economically feasible approaches involve the use of ionic liquids as solvents or co-solvents, since these show improved solvation capability of cellulose over simple aqueous systems. Membranes offer unique opportunities for process intensification which involves fractionation of the resulting biomass hydrolysate leading to …

Evaluating One-Step Catalytic Free Method Including Hydrolysis, Esterification, Transesterification, And Degradation Reactions To Produce Biodiesel From Soybean Oil, Mahmood Gheni Jebur
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Due to the environmental and economic impacts of diesel fuel based on petroleum, several studies have been done to find an alternative source of energy. Biodiesel is considered one of these alternative sources. It is a renewable source of energy produced from vegetable oils and animal fats. There are two main reaction routes used to produce biodiesel (fatty acid methyl esters). Transesterification reaction is the first route used to convert triglycerides to fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs), while hydrolysis followed by esterification reactions are the second route employed to convert triglycerides to free fatty acids (FFA) and then further converted …

Operating System Identification By Ipv6 Communication Using Machine Learning Ensembles, Adrian Ordorica
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Operating system (OS) identification tools, sometimes called fingerprinting tools, are essential for the reconnaissance phase of penetration testing. While OS identification is traditionally performed by passive or active tools that use fingerprint databases, very little work has focused on using machine learning techniques. Moreover, significantly more work has focused on IPv4 than IPv6. We introduce a collaborative neural network ensemble that uses a unique voting system and a random forest ensemble to deliver accurate predictions. This approach uses IPv6 features as well as packet metadata features for OS identification. Our experiment shows that our approach is valid and we achieve …

Realization Of A High Power Microgrid Based On Voltage Source Converters, Yusi Liu
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Microgrid concepts are gradually becoming more popular because they are expected to interface with renewable energies, increase end users’ reliability and resiliency, and promote seamless integration of distributed generators (DG) and energy storage units [1]. Most units are connected through power electronics interfaces, such as ac-dc, dc-dc, and dc-ac converters. The converter design and control are critical to the stability and efficiency of a microgrid.
A microgrid may operate in either gird connected mode or islanded mode [1]. In terms of stability, the grid connected mode is less challenging compared to the islanded mode of operation due to the nearly …

Membrane Surface Engineering For Biochemical Applications, Anh T. Vu
Membrane Surface Engineering For Biochemical Applications, Anh T. Vu
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Synthetic membranes have been frequently used for many fields, such as, the food and beverage, biopharmaceutical, and biofuel industries. In the beer industry, microfiltration frequently suffers from fouling due to the interaction between different species. It is shown that polyphenols can form cross-links with protein molecules, forming insoluble aggregates. However, by adding an optimal amount of polysaccharides these aggregates can be disrupted thus reducing fouling by the aggregates. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) is a powerful technique to locate the foulants inside the wet membrane in order to understand more about the behavior of fouling in microfiltration.
Membrane surface modification …

A Functional Subnetwork Approach To Designing Synthetic Nervous Systems That Control Legged Robot Locomotion, Nicholas Szczecinski, Alexander J. Hunt, Roger Quinn
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A dynamical model of an animal’s nervous system, or synthetic nervous system (SNS), is a potentially transformational control method. Due to increasingly detailed data on the connectivity and dynamics of both mammalian and insect nervous systems, controlling a legged robot with an SNS is largely a problem of parameter tuning. Our approach to this problem is to design functional subnetworks that perform specific operations, and then assemble them into larger models of the nervous system. In this paper, we present networks that perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, differentiation, and integration of incoming signals. Parameters are set within each subnetwork to …
The Macro-Modelling Of Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete/Mortar Flexural Tensile Behavior And Mix Optimization For Flexural Strength., Li Liu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the continuous advances in materials’ technology, the performance of the commonly used concrete building material has continued to improve. Compressive strengths exceeding 75 MPa are now being used in applications throughout the world. However, the concrete becomes less ductile and more susceptible to sudden failures with increases in its compressive strength. Although the behavior of concrete is generally governed by its compressive strength, its tensile strength, although much lower, is also important. This tensile strength impacts appearance, the serviceability and durability of concrete elements. In addition, minimum levels of tensile strength are required for many concrete applications including, earthquake …
Observation And Estimation Study For Sensorless Control Of Linear Vapor Compressors., Joseph Latham
Observation And Estimation Study For Sensorless Control Of Linear Vapor Compressors., Joseph Latham
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Linear vapor compressors have become widely investigated for refrigeration applications due to their high efficiency in comparison to the more common rotary type compressors. However, the nature of the linear compressor adds complexity to the control of these machines. The unconstrained motion of the piston in a linear compressor allows for continuous modulation of the compressor output, but requires knowledge of the mechanical dynamics to effectively control the compressor and prevent collision of the piston with the cylinder head. This control is made more difficult by the highly nonlinear nature of the force of gas compression acting against the piston. …

Applications Of Polarized Metallic Nanostructures., Jasmin Beharic
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Gold nanostructures exhibit technologically useful properties when they are polarized in an electric field. In two projects we explore instances where the polarized metal can be used in real world applications. The first project involves gold nanoparticles (GNP) for use in light actuated microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) applications. Although the GNPs were originally designed for volumetric heating in biomedical applications, we treat them as a thin film coating, opening the door for these particles to be used in MEMS applications. This work characterizes the thermal properties of gold nanoparticles on surfaces for spatially-targeted thermal actuation in MEMS systems. The second project …

Fabrication And Characterization Of A Mcro/Nanofluidic Platform For Electroporation., Hanwen Yuan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For traditional electroporation devices, there are a number of problems associated with these devices such as insufficient understanding of its theoretical mechanism, low cell viability, inadequate electroporation efficiency, excess voltage applied to generate required electric field due to the large size of these devices and sample contamination. Although newly developed microfluidic electroporation devices have solved most of the above existing problems in traditional bulk electroporation devices, they appear to lack the ability to control the precise dose of biomolecules or genes transfecting into cells and, from a manufacturing perspective, the fabrication methods do not enable repeatable production of such devices …
Magnetic Field-Induced Intramolecular Cyclization As A Trigger For Nanoparticle-Based Delivery Systems., Sara Katherine Biladeau
Magnetic Field-Induced Intramolecular Cyclization As A Trigger For Nanoparticle-Based Delivery Systems., Sara Katherine Biladeau
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are used in a variety of applications, including as agents for magnetic resonance imaging, generation of local hyperthermia, and as platforms for drug delivery. Iron-based MNPs are often coated with a shell, such as silica or gold, to increase biocompatibility for drug delivery applications. Many MNPs used for cancer therapy rely on either an internal trigger, such as a difference in pH, or an external trigger, such as light or an alternating magnetic field (AMF), to cause release of a payload, typically a chemotherapeutic drug. Internal triggers are appealing because drug release can be targeted to a …
A Smart Highway Work Zone Merge System Enabled By Connected Vehicles., Abdulmaged Algomaiah
A Smart Highway Work Zone Merge System Enabled By Connected Vehicles., Abdulmaged Algomaiah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Typical traffic control and operations at work zones usually are not very effective in mitigating the work zone bottleneck. A major reason is that the common early merge behaviors limits utilizing the available capacity in the closed lane, especially under moderate to high traffic demands. Recently, using late merge strategy is encouraged to prevent early merge behavior and fully utilize the closed lane and therefore increase capacity of work zone. The development of late merge strategy was not enough to substantially improve the situation due to the lack of compliance and communication among drivers. This thesis suggests and investigates a …

The laboratory characterization techniques including XRD, TEM and …
Piezoelectric Bistable Buckled Beam Energy Harvester., Brian Edward Allgeier
Piezoelectric Bistable Buckled Beam Energy Harvester., Brian Edward Allgeier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A novel energy harvesting device design is presented to be created via microfabrication techniques. Such devices have countless applications for powering low-current electrical devices, especially wireless sensors or transmitters. This micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) design utilizes the piezoelectric response of a bistable buckled beam to gather electrical energy via ambient vibrations. While many traditional piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEH) consist of simple cantilever beam geometries, this nonlinear design utilizes inertial effects of torsional lever arms to actuate a central buckled beam to snap between its two stable states; such an abrupt strain on the piezoelectric beam potentially produces a significantly increased electrical …
