Inhibition Of Blood Coagulation Factor Xii: Evaluation Of Flavonoids As A Drug Candidate, Betsy Crosswhite Jan 2018

Inhibition Of Blood Coagulation Factor Xii: Evaluation Of Flavonoids As A Drug Candidate, Betsy Crosswhite

Honors Theses

This study investigated natural product inhibitors of blood coagulation Factor XII (FXII). FXII initiates the Kallikrein Kinin-System (KKS) within the intrinsic coagulation pathway. Increased expression of this system leads to proinflammatory and procoagulant activities. Inflammation occurs through downstream activation in the KKS. Following the activation of FXII-dependent pathway, bradykinin (BK) binds to the BK receptor 2 (B2) and produces inflammatory signaling. Abnormally increased BK can result in life threatening Hereditary Angioedema (HAE), characterized by severe reoccurring swelling. FXII is critical for pathogenic thrombosis, but is dispensable for hemostasis. This unique property of FXII makes it an attractive drug target. We …

Effects Of Motion Segment Simulation And Joint Positioning On Spinal Loads In Trunk Musculoskeletal Models, F. Ghezelbash, A. H. Eskandari, A. Shirazi-Adl, N. Arjmand, Z. El Ouaaid, A. Plamondon

Études primaires

Musculoskeletal models represent spinal motion segments by spherical joints/beams with linear/nonlinear properties placed at various locations. We investigated the fidelity of these simplified models (i.e., spherical joints with/without rotational springs and beams considering nonlinear/linear properties) in predicting kinematics of the ligamentous spine in comparison with a detailed finite element (FE) model while considering various anterior-posterior joint placements. Using the simplified models with different joint offsets in a subject-specific musculoskeletal model, we computed local spinal forces during forward flexion and compared results with intradiscal pressure measurements. In comparison to the detailed FE model, linearized beam and spherical joint models failed to …

Lyles School of Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

There is an increasing interest in hierarchical design and Additive Manufacturing (AM)of cement-based materials. However, the brittle behavior of these materials and the presence of interfaces from the additive manufacturing process represent the current major challenges. Our work focuses on harnessing the heterogeneous interfaces by employing clever designs from bio-inspired Bouligand architectured materials. In this paper, we aim to demonstrate some key mechanisms that can allow brittle hardened cement-based materials to gain flaw-tolerant properties. Mechanisms such as cracktwisting at the interfaces have been previously observed in naturally-occurring orsynthetic composite Bouligand architectures. In this paper, a heterogeneous interface with porous characteristics …

Pathways For Mitigating Thermal Losses In Solar Photovoltaics, Rodolphe Vaillon, Oliver Dupre, Raúl Bayoán Cal, Marc Calaf

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

To improve the performance of solar photovoltaic devices one should mitigate three types of losses: optical, electrical and thermal. However, further reducing the optical and electrical losses in modern photovoltaic devices is becoming increasingly costly. Therefore, there is a rising interest in minimizing the thermal losses. These correspond to the reduction in electrical power output resultant of working at temperatures above 25 °C and the associated accelerated aging. Here, we quantify the impact of all possible strategies to mitigate thermal losses in the case of the mainstream crystalline silicon technology. Results indicate that ensuring a minimum level of conductive/convective cooling …

Experimental Validation Of An Unscented Kalman Filter For Estimating Transient Engine Exhaust Composition With Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, David Wilson, Casey Allen Jan 2018

Experimental Validation Of An Unscented Kalman Filter For Estimating Transient Engine Exhaust Composition With Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, David Wilson, Casey Allen

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is a prevalent technique for measuring the comprehensive chemical composition of engine emissions. However, its applicability to transient emissions is limited due to recirculation of exhaust from past engine cycles within a FTIR gas cell and nonstationarity of the infrared beam intensity. An unscented Kalman filter is developed to overcome these limitations and obtain accurate, time-resolved estimations of engine exhaust composition from FTIR measurements. Residence time distribution within the FTIR gas cell is modeled using the well-mixed assumption, while the Fourier transform of an interferogram generated from a linearly evolving, uniformly broadened absorption line is …

Evaluation Of Traffic Incident Timeline To Quantify The Performance Of Incident Management Strategies, Henrick Joseph Haule

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Transportation agencies are introducing new strategies and techniques that will improve traffic incident management. Apart from other indicators, agencies measure the performance of the strategies by evaluating the incidents timeline. An effective strategy has to reduce the length of the incident timeline. An incident timeline comprises various stages in the incident management procedure, starting when the incident was detected, and ending when there is the recovery of normal traffic conditions. This thesis addresses three issues that are related to the traffic incident timeline and the incident management strategies.

First, co-location of responding agencies has not been investigated as other incident …

High Speed, Micron Precision Scanning Technology For 3d Printing Applications, Nicholas Emord

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Modern 3D printing technology is becoming a more viable option for use in industrial manufacturing. As the speed and precision of rapid prototyping technology improves, so too must the 3D scanning and verification technology. Current 3D scanning technology (such as CT Scanners) produce the resolution needed for micron precision inspection. However, the method lacks in speed. Some scans can be multiple gigabytes in size taking several minutes to acquire and process. Especially in high volume manufacturing of 3D printed parts, such delays prohibit the widespread adaptation of 3D scanning technology for quality control. The limiting factors of current technology boil …

Towards Designing Energy Efficient Symmetric Key Protocols, Sai Raghu Talluri Jan 2018

Towards Designing Energy Efficient Symmetric Key Protocols, Sai Raghu Talluri

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Energy consumption by various modern symmetric key encryption protocols (DES,

3-DES, AES and, Blowfish) is studied from an algorithmic perspective. The work

is directed towards redesigning or modifying the underlying algorithms for these

protocols to make them consume less energy than they currently do. This research

takes the approach of reducing energy consumption by parallelizing the

consecutive memory accesses of symmetric key encryption algorithms. To achieve

parallelization, an existing energy complexity model is applied to symmetric key

encryption algorithms. Inspired by the popular DDR3 architecture, the model assumes

that main memory is divided into multiple banks, each of which can …

The Role Of Wave Self-Similarity In Nearshore Wave Spectra, Morgan M. Smith Jan 2018

The Role Of Wave Self-Similarity In Nearshore Wave Spectra, Morgan M. Smith

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nonlinear wave-wave interactions and wave breaking contribute to nearshore wave energy dissipation. These factors can be analyzed by the principles of wave self-similarity. The equilibrium range can be shown in wind-driven wave spectra that exist in the form ( ) and However, the appropriate methods used to determine this loss of energy are controversial. This study examines an approach that reinvestigates the self-similarity principles. Wave spectra with lower peak periods are dominated by nonlinear wave-wave interactions which produce a scaling in shallow water. This thesis investigates the relative role of spectral similarity in different conditions in the nearshore region of …

Fatigue is a significant contributor to accidents in aviation, in commercial, private, and military aircraft, and is defined as “extreme tiredness resulting from mental or physical exertion or illness” (Oxford Dictionary, 2017, n.p.). Typical fatigue mitigation techniques include work and rest scheduling, obtaining required minimum rest before a flight, and pharmacological countermeasures (Caldwell & Caldwell, 2005; Caldwell, Mallis, Caldwell, Paul, Miller, & Neri, 2009). However, Controlled Rest in Position (CRIP), or in-flight sleep, may be another potential way to mitigate pilot fatigue. Prior research has investigated consumer perceptions relating to CRIP, revealing unfavorable perceptions (Winter, Carryl, & Rice, 2015). However, …

Efficient Interconnectivity Among Networks Under Security Constraint, Pankaz Das, Rezoan A. Shuvro, Mahshid Rahnamay-Naeini, Nasir Ghani, Majeed M. Hayat Jan 2018

Efficient Interconnectivity Among Networks Under Security Constraint, Pankaz Das, Rezoan A. Shuvro, Mahshid Rahnamay-Naeini, Nasir Ghani, Majeed M. Hayat

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Interconnectivity among networks is essential for enhancing communication capabilities of networks such as the expansion of geographical range, higher data rate, etc. However, interconnections may initiate vulnerability (e.g., cyber attacks) to a secure network due to introducing gateways and opportunities for security attacks such as malware, which may propagate from the less secure network. In this paper, the interconnectivity among subnetworks is maximized under the constraint of security risk. The dynamics of propagation of security risk is modeled by the evil-rain influence model and the SIR (Susceptible-Infected-Recovered) epidemic model. Through extensive numerical simulations using different network topologies and interconnection patterns, …
