An Integrated Microstructural-Nanomechanical-Chemical Approach To Examine Material-Specific Characteristics Of Cementitious Interphase Regions, Mahdieh Khedmati, Yong-Rak Kim, Joesph A. Turner, Hani Alanazi, Charles Nguyen

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Effective properties and structural performance of cementitious mixtures are substantially governed by the quality of the interphase region because it acts as a bridge transferring forces between aggregates and a binding matrix and is generally susceptible to damage. As alternative binding agents like alkali-activated precursors have obtained substantial attention in recent years, there is a growing need for fundamental knowledge to uncover interphase formation mechanisms. In this paper, two different types of binding materials, i.e., fly ash-based geopolymer and ordinary portland cement, were mixed with limestone aggregate to examine and compare the microstructures and nanomechanical properties of interphase region. To …

Modulating oxidative stresses and inflammation can potentially prevent or alleviate the pathological conditions of diseases associated with the nervous system, including ischemic optic neuropathy. In this study we evaluated the anti-neuroinflammatory and neuroprotective activities of Rhus coriaria (R. coriaria) extract in vivo. The half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) for DPPH, ABTS and B-carotene were 6.79 ± 0.009 µg/mL, 10.94 ± 0.09 µg/mL, and 6.25 ± 0.06 µg/mL, respectively. Retinal ischemia was induced by optic nerve crush injury in albino Balb/c mice. The anti-inflammatory activity of ethanolic extract of R. coriaria (ERC) and linoleic acid (LA) on …

Molecular Doping Enabled Scalable Blading Of Efficient Hole-Transport-Layer-Free Perovskite Solar Cells, Wu-Qiang Wu, Qi Wang, Yanjun Fang, Yuchuan Shao, Shi Tang, Yehao Deng, Haidong Lu, Ye Liu, Tao Li, Zhibin Yang, Alexei Gruverman, Jinsong Huang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The efficiencies of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are now reaching such consistently high levels that scalable manufacturing at low cost is becoming critical. However, this remains challenging due to the expensive hole-transporting materials usually employed, and difficulties associated with the scalable deposition of other functional layers. By simplifying the device architecture, hole-transport-layer-free PSCs with improved photovoltaic performance are fabricated via a scalable doctor-blading process. Molecular doping of halide perovskite films improved the conductivity of the films and their electronic contact with the conductive substrate, resulting in a reduced series resistance. It facilitates the extraction of photoexcited holes from perovskite directly …

Ambiqual – A Full Reference Objective Quality Metric For Ambisonic Spatial Audio, Miroslaw Narbutt, Andrew Allen, Jan Skoglund, Michael Chinen, Andrew Hines

Conference papers

Streaming spatial audio over networks requires efficient encoding techniques that compress the raw audio content without compromising quality of experience. Streaming service providers such as YouTube need a perceptually relevant objective audio quality metric to monitor users’ perceived quality and spatial localization accuracy. In this paper we introduce a full reference objective spatial audio quality metric, AMBIQUAL, which assesses both Listening Quality and Localization Accuracy. In our solution both metrics are derived directly from the B-format Ambisonic audio. The metric extends and adapts the algorithm used in ViSQOLAudio, a full reference objective metric designed for assessing speech and audio quality. …

Ranking Semantics Based On Subgraphs Analysis, Pierpaolo Dondio Jan 2018

Ranking Semantics Based On Subgraphs Analysis, Pierpaolo Dondio

Conference papers

An abstract argumentation framework [15] consists of a direct graph where nodes represent arguments and arrows represent an attack relation among arguments. A semantics is used to evaluate arguments’ acceptability. In the labelling approach [7], this evaluation is done by assigning to each argument a label in, out or undec, meaning that the argument is considered consistently acceptable, non-acceptable or undecided (i.e. no decision can be taken on arguments’ acceptability).

Effects Of Build Parameters On The Mechanical And Di-Electrical Properties Of Am Parts, Sai Sri Munaganuru, Muthu Ram Prabhu Elenchezhian, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Rauhon Ahmed Shaik, Hari K. Adluru, Rassel Raihan

Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive

Additive manufacturing (AM) revolutionized many industries, i.e., Automotive, Biomedical, Aerospace and Defense. As opposed to traditional manufacturing methods, a part is manufactured layer by layer from 3D CAD models in AM. Though the vision of AM is impressive, there are many challenges that are hindering the widespread use of these complex parts. One of the challenges in these materials is defects grow and their orientation during the manufacturing process. In this paper we are going to investigate the effect of Build Parameters and their effects on the mechanical and electrical properties of the additively manufactured heterogeneous material system. We will …

Perceptions Of Female Cybersecurity Professionals Toward Factors That Encourage Females To The Cybersecurity Field, Kembley Kay Lingelbach Jan 2018

Perceptions Of Female Cybersecurity Professionals Toward Factors That Encourage Females To The Cybersecurity Field, Kembley Kay Lingelbach

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Despite multiple national, educational, and industry initiatives, women continue to be underrepresented in the cybersecurity field. Only 11% of cybersecurity professionals, globally, are female. This contributes to the growing overall shortage of workers in the field. This research addressed the significant underrepresentation of females in the cybersecurity workforce. There are many practitioner and industry studies that suggest self-efficacy, discrimination and organizational culture play important roles in the low rate of women in the cybersecurity field. A limited number of scholarly studies identify causal factors; however, there is not a general consensus or framework to explain the problem thoroughly. Moreover, there …

Comparing The Distraction Of Cell Phone Conversations To In-Person Conversations On A Simulated Commercial Flight, Tianhua Li, Andrew R. Dattel

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The purpose of the study was to determine the difference in participants' attention to announcements and compliance with safety behaviors when talking on a cell phone and when talking face-to-face in a simulated commercial flight. Currently, passengers are forbidden from making cell phone calls during flights in the United States due to electronic interference. However, any possible interference can be eliminated with the help of new technology. Although talking on the cell phone does not cause electronic interference, the distraction of a passenger caused by a cell phone may negatively impact safety. This study compared the extent of safety compliance …
