New Optimization Algorithm Inspired By Fluid Mechanics For Combined Economic And Emission Dispatch Problem, Ruyi Dong, Shengsheng Wang

With the increasing concern over environmental protection, the combined economic emission dispatch (CEED) problem has received much attention. It needs to minimize both fuel cost and emission pollution. This study aims to propose a new metaheuristic algorithm inspired by fluid mechanics to solve the CEED problem with the weighted sum method. The new algorithm simulates the inverse process of fluid flowing spontaneously from high pressure to low pressure, similar to the optimization process of the CEED problem. When applied in two real-world cases, the new algorithm achieves better performance compared with other algorithms in the literature.

The pituitary gland is a critical organ that is necessary for many physiological processes, including growth, reproduction, and stress response. These vital processes are regulated through the secretion of pituitary hormones from specialized cell types. Pituitary hormone-producing cells arise from a common pool of pituitary progenitors in the developing Rathke’s pouch, and mutations that disrupt the formation and differentiation of pituitary progenitors often result in hypopituitarism, pituitary adenomas, or craniopharyngiomas. Thus, it is necessary to determine the mechanisms of pituitary development in order to understand the ways in which these congenital defects and tumors develop and disrupt pituitary function. Sanak Island, located off the southern Alaska Peninsula, was home to the native Aleut peoples for thousands of years. Their hunter-gatherer society depended heavily on the arctic and marine ecosystem for food resources.

In 2015, a team of archaeologists from Idaho State and Utah State universities went to the island and collected data about the Aleut population size and their diet.

This study constructed a dynamical model to mathematically predict the Aleut population over time in order to gain insights into how food resources affected the Aleut people’s ability to survive.
