Analyzing Requirements And Traceability Information To Improve Bug Localization, Michael Rath, David Lo, Patrick Mader
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Locating bugs in industry-size software systems is time consuming and challenging. An automated approach for assisting the process of tracing from bug descriptions to relevant source code benefits developers. A large body of previous work aims to address this problem and demonstrates considerable achievements. Most existing approaches focus on the key challenge of improving techniques based on textual similarity to identify relevant files. However, there exists a lexical gap between the natural language used to formulate bug reports and the formal source code and its comments. To bridge this gap, state-of-the-art approaches contain a component for analyzing bug history information …
Optimization Of Chemical Kinetic Mechanism For Efficient Computation Of Combustion Process In Advanced Internal Combustion Engine Configurations, Muzammil Arshad
Optimization Of Chemical Kinetic Mechanism For Efficient Computation Of Combustion Process In Advanced Internal Combustion Engine Configurations, Muzammil Arshad
Theses and Dissertations
For the development and optimization of future fuels and automotive engines, computer modeling and simulation has proved itself as an inseparable, efficient and cost effective tool to experimental studies. The traditional reliance of computer models on simplified global reaction steps to simulate the combustion and engine performance parameters, such as in-cylinder pressure, heat release rate and pollutant formation could reduce credibility of the predictions as the global reaction steps depend on arbitrary adjustment of model parameters. This study has incorporated detailed chemistry by augmenting the combustion model of a three dimensional unsteady compressible turbulent Navier-Stokes solver with liquid spray injection …

K-Means: A Revisit, Wan-Lei Zhao, Cheng-Hao Deng, Chong-Wah Ngo
K-Means: A Revisit, Wan-Lei Zhao, Cheng-Hao Deng, Chong-Wah Ngo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Due to its simplicity and versatility, k-means remains popular since it was proposed three decades ago. The performance of k-means has been enhanced from different perspectives over the years. Unfortunately, a good trade-off between quality and efficiency is hardly reached. In this paper, a novel k-means variant is presented. Different from most of k-means variants, the clustering procedure is driven by an explicit objective function, which is feasible for the whole l(2)-space. The classic egg-chicken loop in k-means has been simplified to a pure stochastic optimization procedure. The procedure of k-means becomes simpler and converges to a considerably better local …

Presenting PMU data to power system operators in a format that is truly useful for them and that affords improved situation awareness (SA) and fast and accurate decision making is a particular challenge to display design. This report describes development …
Accuracy Of Residential Water Meters In Response To Short, Intermittent Flows, John R. Chadwick
Accuracy Of Residential Water Meters In Response To Short, Intermittent Flows, John R. Chadwick
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In this study, water meter accuracy in response to short, intermittent flows was tested. Burst flows have short durations (a few seconds or less), and occur at a variety of flow rates. For some types of meters, it is difficult to accurately measure short, intermittent flow rates. Depending on the meter type, an intermittent flow can result in either under-registering or over-registering of the actual throughput.
During the testing for this research, water was passed through meters for various time combinations, test setups, and flows. It should be understood that realistically, a household setting will not see burst flows occurring …
Silane Modulation Of Protein Conformation And Self-Assembly, Abul Bashar Mohammad Giasuddin
Silane Modulation Of Protein Conformation And Self-Assembly, Abul Bashar Mohammad Giasuddin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This research focused on development of nanoparticle- based therapeutics against amyloid fibrils. Amyloid fibrils are associated with various diseases such as Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, mad cow disease, Alzheimer’s, and cataracts. Amyloid fibrils develop when proteins change their shape from a native form to a pathogenic “misfolded” form. The misfolded proteins have the ability to recruit more native proteins into the pathogenic forms, which self-assemble into amyloid fibrils that are hallmarks of the various protein-misfolding diseases listed above. Amyloid fibrils are highly resistant to degradation, which may contribute to the symptoms of amyloid diseases. Synthetic drugs, natural compounds, and antibodies are widely …
Radio-Frequency Transmitter Geolocation Using Non-Ideal Received Signal Strength Indicators, Samuel Whiting
Radio-Frequency Transmitter Geolocation Using Non-Ideal Received Signal Strength Indicators, Samuel Whiting
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Locating a radio transmitter is important in a number of problems such as finding radio tags, people with radios, and devices that are collecting information in an unauthorized manner. Locating a radio transmitter is inherently difficult because the radio waves of concern are not in the visible spectrum, they reflect and distort easily, and they propagate at the speed of light.
A number of methods for locating transmitters are currently used, the majority of which require expensive hardware and extensive processing. This thesis presents a method of using simpler measurements to produce similar location estimates in order to augment or …

Desorption Of Trace Inorganic Contaminants From Solids In Drinking Water Distribution Systems, Tiana W. Hammer
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In order to maintain high quality safe drinking water, we need to understand what happens after the water has been cleaned at the drinking water plant and before it gets to the consumer’s house. Even if low concentrations of toxic contaminants enter the drinking water distribution system (DWDS) there is potential for contaminants to accumulate and be released by changes in flow or water conditions in high concentrations at the tap. For this study, we collected solid material from Park City, Utah that accumulated within the DWDS, along with a year of monthly monitoring of the DWDS. These solids were …

Importance Of Exposure Time On Digital Image Correlation (Dic) At Extreme Temperatures, Thinh Quang Thai
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Extreme temperatures have increasingly played an important role in engineering applications, including leading edges during hypersonic flight, spacecraft re-entry, and propulsion systems. In order to design for such thermo-mechanical conditions, materials must be characterized using suitable measurement methods. DIC is a popular and versatile method in full-field measurement. In brief, DIC compares images of a sample between its undeformed and deformed state in order to get displacement and strain field maps. Since the images are acquired from digital cameras, it is important to have high contrast images for meaningful correlation. Exposure time is a pivotal camera setting relating to camera …

Airline deregulation caused a profound reshape in the aviation industry. The liberalization of the aviation sector resulted in a favorable environment for the emergence of low-cost carriers (LCCs). Following deregulation, airlines saw many attempts at their business strategies to gain more passengers in air transportation market. To capture additional market shares of passenger traffic, the business models of LCCs have evolved to mirror the more common business models employed by the traditional legacy airlines. The purpose of this study was to examine what effect, if any, exists between LCCs’ market share of passenger enplanements at secondary airports and their business …
Development Of Recyclability Index: A Design For Assembly And Disassembly Approach, Darshan Yadav
Development Of Recyclability Index: A Design For Assembly And Disassembly Approach, Darshan Yadav
Theses and Dissertations
Designing products for recyclability is driven by environmental and economic goals. Several Design for Assembly(DFA) rules and parameters can be used to gauge the recyclability index of product designs. These indices can be used for comparative analysis of the recyclability of different products. This assists the designer in making design choices related to the product’s end of life. However, many of the existing recyclability indices are only available after design and manufacturing decisions are made. If such design decisions could be made earlier in the design process, when the design space is less bound, recyclability could be considered earlier. A …
Pollen Grains Recognition Based On Computer Vision Methods, Amar Idrees Daood
Pollen Grains Recognition Based On Computer Vision Methods, Amar Idrees Daood
Theses and Dissertations
The classification of pollen grains is a main task in many disciplines including ecology, forensic sciences, allergy control, and oil exploration. In these application areas, visual inspection is the common method used for classifying pollen. However, recognition by visual inspection consumes much time and effort. Even though some level of automation exists, the automatic recognition of pollen grains remains an open problem. Current pollen-classification solutions rely on measurements of visual cues such as contour or texture. However, these features do not capture the visual complexity of information needed for discriminating among various species of pollen, especially when both a large-scale …
Speech Emotion Recognition Using Connectionist Models In A Tandem System, Mary Najafi
Speech Emotion Recognition Using Connectionist Models In A Tandem System, Mary Najafi
Theses and Dissertations
This article presents a tandem Speech Emotion Recognition (SER) system by which 8 archetypal emotions can be differentiated based upon two different types of acoustic features as inputs to Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models. The two types of features that are fed into the classifiers reveal the degree of excitement and pleasentness of speech. The author has implied the time-based characteristics of speech in the feature extraction method by monitoring the trend of local features through time. Thus, two global features are proposed that are derived from Teager Energy Operator (TEO)-based (T EOg) and spectral features, Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coeffcients (MF …
Infrared Resonant-Coupled Metamaterial Sensing And Phonon-Polariton-Enhanced Infrared Interconnects, Michael Francis Finch
Infrared Resonant-Coupled Metamaterial Sensing And Phonon-Polariton-Enhanced Infrared Interconnects, Michael Francis Finch
Theses and Dissertations
Coupled-mode theory has been applied to various fields of endeavor from waveguide splitters/combiners and molecular sensing to light-matter interactions. Metamaterials, engineered periodic or aperiodic structures, are employed to sense molecular vibrational fingerprints in the mid to long infrared wavelengths. A metasurface, a 2D metamaterial, can be designed such that it has a resonance at a molecular vibrational frequency. Mode splitting results from the coupling of two electromagnetic field distributions, or modes, spatially and/or temporally. Metamaterial and molecular resonance coupling is a result of near field interaction. Fano resonances have an asymmetric line-shape that results from the coupling of a continuum …

Simulation Based Cost-Benefit Analysis For The Inspection Of Highway Bridges Using Small Unmanned Aerial Systems, Rashmi Kadamkulangara Balagopalan
Theses and Dissertations
Visual inspections remain significantly important in surveying the present decay and deterioration status of bridge inspections. These inspections are critical to conduct patch-up remedies and maintenance assignments to guarantee the continued serviceability of structures. Given the high inventory of bridges nationwide (over of 600,000 bridges), increasing costs of bridge inspections are becoming a concern for departments of transportation (DOTs). The conventional inspection method is costly due to various factors. For example, the current approach often requires specialized equipment (e.g., bucket trucks) to conduct underside bridge inspections that significantly affect safety levels on the field and overall costs, and inspectors need …

Size-Scale Effects Of Nonlinear Weir Hydraulics, Nathan L. Young
Size-Scale Effects Of Nonlinear Weir Hydraulics, Nathan L. Young
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Experimental physical model studies of hydraulic structures are often conducted to replicate flow behavior that may occur at the prototype scale. Geometric similitude is most often maintained between the prototype and model when studying reservoir and open channel hydraulic structures to account for the dominant gravity and inertia forces while other fluid forces (e.g., viscosity, surface tension) are assumed negligible. However, as model size and/or upstream head decreases, other fluid forces can exceed the negligible level and influence model flow behavior. This phenomenon is referred to as size-scale effects and is one potential origin of error in predicting the prototype behavior …
